It's getting difficult to tell whether Obama stands for anything
Sunday, July 06, 2008
By Jack Kelly, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
It's a good thing many of Barack Obama's supporters don't care much about issues, because their candidate has been changing his position on them with dizzying speed.
Jack Kelly is a columnist for the Post-Gazette and The Blade of Toledo, Ohio (jkelly@post-gazette.com, 412-263-1476)."Barack Obama aligned himself with welfare reform on Monday, launching a television ad which touts the way the overhaul 'slashed rolls by 80 percent,' " ABC News reported July 1. "Obama leaves out, however, that he was against the 1996 federal legislation which precipitated the caseload reduction."
When the Supreme Court overturned the District of Columbia ban on handgun ownership June 26, Mr. Obama said he supported the decision of the 5-4 majority. But last November he told the Chicago Tribune he thought the D.C. handgun ban was constitutional. While in the state legislature, he proposed legislation that would, in effect, have banned handguns in Illinois.
Mr. Obama said he disagreed with another 5-4 Supreme Court decision the day before, which struck down a Louisiana law that had authorized the death penalty for someone who rapes a child. When he first ran for the state Senate in 1996, Mr. Obama said he opposed capital punishment, and in the legislature he opposed applying the death penalty to gang murders.
Campaigning in Ohio before the Democratic primary there, Mr. Obama said the North American Free Trade Agreement should be renegotiated. One of his economic advisers, University of Chicago professor Austan Goolsbee, told a Canadian official that Mr. Obama's anti-NAFTA rhetoric "should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans."
When the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported this, the Obama campaign initially denied that Mr. Goolsbee had met with the Canadian consul in Chicago and then claimed he had been misquoted. After the CBC provided conclusive proof both of the meeting and what Mr. Goolsbee had said, Mr. Obama distanced himself from his economic adviser.
No longer. In an interview with Nina Easton of Fortune magazine published June 18, Mr. Obama said he didn't want unilaterally to reopen negotiations on NAFTA. "Sometimes during a campaign the rhetoric gets overheated and amplified," he said.
Last August, Mr. Obama called for easing the economic embargo on Cuba. When he was running for the U.S. Senate in 2003, he indicated he favored lifting it entirely. But in a speech to the Cuban American National Foundation May 23, Mr. Obama said he'd maintain the embargo.
Last September, Mr. Obama said he would accept federal matching funds for the general election campaign if his GOP opponent did the same. But on June 19, he announced he wouldn't. The reason was simple. The Obama campaign thinks it can raise more than twice as much as the $85 million he'd get from the feds. The flip-flop probably would have gone down better if he hadn't offered a transparently phony rationale for it.
"Mr. Obama had an opportunity here to demonstrate that he really is a different kind of politician, willing to put principles and the promises he has made above political calculation. He made a different choice," said The Washington Post in an editorial. "Fine. Politicians do what politicians need to do. But they ought to spare us the self-congratulatory back-patting while they're doing it."
Mr. Obama said on Jan. 28 that he would "strongly oppose" an intelligence surveillance bill that provided retroactive immunity from lawsuits to telephone companies that cooperated with the U.S. government. But on June 20, he announced he'd support a bill that does just that.
In a debate with Sen. Hillary Clinton in April, Mr. Obama pledged to remove all U.S. troops from Iraq within 16 months of assuming the presidency. But foreign policy adviser Susan Rice appeared to be laying the groundwork for another change in position in her appearance on MSNBC Tuesday. "That's not a deadline," she said. "He will listen to his commanders on the ground, he will follow and heed their advice."
Dominic Lawson, writing in the left-wing British newspaper The Independent Tuesday, described Mr. Obama as "the master of the U-turn."
Some Obama supporters are experiencing buyer's remorse, Mr. Lawson said, but most think "Obama doesn't believe any of the things he is now saying to woo the 'redneck states.'
"To this group we must address a simple question," Mr. Lawson asked. "How do you know what Obama really believes in?"

Yes, Sunshine, I agree. The Obamaniacs would have everybody believe that he and Hillary are identical on the issues, yet, when they are shown the truth of Hillary's true feelings of Obama, they resort to childish replies and complete lies. On the website below, they point out;
<A href="http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/03/clinton_ive_crossed_commanderi.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.swamppolitics.com/...</A>
On March 6, 2008-
In a Cabinet-style setting, surrounded by retired military leaders, Sen. Hillary Clinton said the public should ask whether Democratic presidential rival Barack Obama has met the criteria needed to become the nation’s commander in chief.
“I think that since we now know Sen. (John) McCain will be the nominee for the Republican Party, national security will be front and center in this election. We all know that. And I think it’s imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander-in-chief threshold,” the New York senator told reporters crowded into an infant’s bedroom-sized hotel conference room in Washington.
“I believe that I’ve done that. Certainly, Sen. McCain has done that and you’ll have to ask Sen. Obama with respect to his candidacy,” she said.
Calling McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee a good friend and a “distinguished man with a great history of service to our country,” Clinton said, “Both of us will be on that stage having crossed that threshold. That is a critical criterion for the next Democratic nominee to deal with.”
And;
“There are certain critical issues that voters always look to in a general election. National security experience (and) the qualifications to be commander-in-chief are front and center. They always have been. They always will be,” she said.
She said she and McCain had traveled to Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan together as she repeated a line that surfaced from the campaign trail. She and McCain “bring a lifetime of experience to the campaign, Clinton said, while “Sen. Obama will bring a speech he gave in 2002,” stating his opposition to the Iraq war as an Illinois state senator.
When Hillary herself states that she and McCain are friends, and, in NO uncertain terms states that she and McCain had BOTH passed the test showing that either one of them were capable of being Commander-In-Chief, it really leaves nothing to the imagination as to who she truly feels is best qualified to lead.

I believe that no matter who we WANT to vote for.. if they have no realistic chance to win then we need to concentrate on stopping Obama..it is my priority...hopefully a lot of others too.

Just another "string puller" should Obama get in..(God help us all).. but please don't talk about Christianity and Obama..he is no Christian..no matter what he has said.. The proof of that is that he belonged to this racist, hate mongering church for 20 years.. never once taking a stand against racism or hate in all that time.. never leaving the church.. totally showing lack of integrity and that he and his wife, by staying in this environment, show that they too are racists and hate mongers.. There are no other options..they wanted to belong to this church..so they stayed..they agreed with the theology of hate and racism..they embraced this doctrine and the hate all those years...no.. no.. Christian and Obama do not go together as he would like us to believe.. he didnt even know the New Testament existed as evidenced recently.. all he knew about were a few quotes from the Old Testament.. that is all they quote for furthering their cause in Cones black liberation theology. I cannot say whether or not Oprah is a Christian but certainly we can say that the Obamas have not found Christianity at this time..

Shelvis, I too am a vet(Viet Nam), and the best advice I could give is; as Squint said so well, FORGET the party system because there's very little difference between them once they take office. But, I believe, most importantly, check out EVERY candidate and review, NOT WHAT THEY SAY, but, WHAT THEY HAVE DONE. The idea of waiting for a candidate to make a gaff is ludicrous. We have all made errors when we speak, but look at what they have done in their particular lives. In McCain, I don't believe for one minute that, because he was a POW, that it qulifies him for office any more than Obama. What I look at though, concerning McCain are the facts that;
#1- Not only did he serve in the military himself, his own son is currently serving his third tour in Iraq... NO other candidate for POTUS can claim this.
#2- McCain has served in the U.S. Senate since 1982 (36 years), and in that time, has NEVER approved or supported a "Pork Barrel Project" for his home state of AZ.
#3 - Although the neo cons and ultra liberals hate McCain, he is one of the only Senators to work diligently across party lines for the betterment of the nation. Yes, the man has a temper, after 36 years of putting up with sickening B.S. in Washington, I would bet that any of us would have a temper too.
I honestly believe that Ron Paul is a exceptional man, and one of the few honest politicians we have in Washington D.C. So, in conclusion, I really believe that the only viable way to make a truly informed decision is to ignore ALL the rhetoric from ALL parties and really research each candidates history, NOT what each candidate is SAYING.

you know I give you credit for being interested in political issues and it is a great place to learn..you can take anything you read here and look up the sources and other info on google or wherever and then you know who is telling the truth or not.. certainly would give you a good education politically and some "practice" for the day when you can vote.. I think some of us dont have a lot of time to explain some things to you and you must admit you are very opinionated at times even when you don't know all the facts.. so I don't want to argue with you but am happy to help you learn. Good luck to you ..

Listen, I don't give a damn if no one respects me on this website! I WILL SAY WHAT I FEEL. You can tell me to wait until I'm older to get into "grown folks" conversations, but I will not listen to you. I will KEEP pushing peoples buttons until they break, that's my job, that's what I go on this site for. And i've succesfully done it with you. HELLO AND GOODBYE!!!!
