The 62-year-old singer and actress is reported to be in talks to play Catwoman opposite Christian Bale in the third Batman film from British director Christopher Nolan.
The Oscar-winner will join a cast that includes Johnny Depp as The Riddler as she plays the whip-carrying burglar. The character has also been played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry.
A studio executive said: "Cher is Nolan's first choice to play Catwoman. He wants to her to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years.
"The new Catwoman will be the absolute opposite of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry's purring creations."
Filming of the new Batman instalment, provisionally entitled The Caped Crusader, is due to begin in Vancouver early next year.
The Dark Knight, this summer's blockbuster, has become the most successful of the Batman movies. Warner Bros expects the film to make about $530m.
It stars the late Heath Ledger, who was found dead in his Manhattan apartment after taking an accidental drugs overdose. His performance as The Joker is widely expected to garner an Oscar nomination.
Cher's recent acting performances have included Tea with Mussolini in 1999 and Stuck on You, in 2003 in which she played herself.

The trailer for The Duchess, a new film about the aristocrat Georgiana Spencer and her adulterous life, shows a clip of the Princess juxtaposed with the title character and accompanied by the words: "The two were related by ancestry and united by destiny". A voice over adds: "History repeats itself."
Knightley, 23, who plays the Duchess of Devonshire, said: "I am Georgiana. I am not Diana. The film is not about Diana."
The duchess, an 18th-century beauty, was the great-great-great-great aunt of Diana. Both women were born Spencers and married important men who then took mistresses. Georgian's husband, the Duke of Devonshire, had an affair with Lady Elizabeth Foster.
Georgiana then formed a relationship with Earl Grey, the politician after whom the tea is named. She was an active political campaigner.
But neither the biography on which the film is based or the film itself make any reference to the former Princess.
Amanda Foreman, who wrote the biography, said: "There is absolutely no reason to have done this trailer, which is a bad joke.
"The marketing people probably thought the only way they could get young popcorn-eating brigade to see this film was if they made some comparison with Diana. But they did not need to and should not have done it."
She also said that the "united by destiny" tag is inaccurate.
"I don't actually think that Georgiana died in a carriage crash," she said.

Johnny Depp's musical return
Johnny Depp is reportedly set to reunite with his old band.
The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actor is to play two concerts on August 29 and 30 at the Club Cinema in Pompano Beach, Florida, with The Kids.
Johnny last performed with the band at the same venue in January last year, as part of the first Sheila Witkin Memorial Reunion Concert - the same fundraiser he is expected to rejoin them for next week.
The star is known for his musical talents and has previously recorded a solo album and played slide guitar on Oasis song 'Fade In-Out', which appeared on the band's third studio album 'Be Here Now'.
It was recently revealed that Johnny, Colin Farrell and Jude Law have donated their earnings from new movie 'The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus' to Heath Ledger's daughter Matilda.
The actors - who replaced Heath following his death from an accidental prescription drugs overdose in January - wanted to give their money to Heath's two-year-old child with actress Michelle Williams to ensure she has a secure future.
The movie's director Terry Gilliam said: "The three actors were totally heroic coming in. This doesn't happen very often - where there's a tragedy like this, and very famous, very successful actors suddenly say, 'OK, we'll do whatever it takes to help.'
Alice in Wonderland - starring Johnny Depp? - to be filmed at National Trust house
A film version of Alice in Wonderland is to use a historic National Trust property as one of its main locations.

Tim Burton, 49, has chosen Antony House in Torpoint, Cornwall, as the outside set for his adaptation of Lewis Carroll's book.
The multi-million pound movie, rumoured to star Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, is due for release in 2010 and will be shown in 3D.
The 18th century house, garden and a woodland will be closed to the public from September 1 to October 14 to allow filming to take place.
Rebecca Miller, of the National Trust, said: "We are absolutely over the moon that Antony has been chosen as a location for Tim Burton's new film Alice in Wonderland.
"One of the reasons it was chosen was because it's a hidden gem - it's one of the trust's lesser known properties and they felt this fitted in very well with the feel of the film."
The house is the permanent home of the Carew Pole family, who have lived there for the past 600 years.
Spokesman Harvey Edgington added: "The National Trust happily provides locations when possible, to a variety of films, TV, documentaries and commercials.
"Alice in Wonderland will not only help raise funds for conservation work but will also contribute to the local economy by having the crew on location."
Swarms of people rushed to a series of auditions to be extras in the movie held in Plymouth, Devon, last month.
Over 3,000 hopefuls appeared before casting agents to fill just 250 places. Australian newcomer Mia Wasikowsk will play the part of Alice.

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale welcomed their second little prince today, E! News has confirmed.
Son Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale was born Thursday at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, joining 2-year-old brother Kingston in the musically inclined couple's burgeoning brood.
The family's newest addition arrived at 12:46 p.m., weighing 8.5 pounds.
"Mother, baby and family are all happy and healthy," a rep for the couple said in a statement.
Stefani set tongues wagging early this morning when she was spotted checking into Cedars, around which the paparazzi immediately set up camp.
A clean-shaven Rossdale, clad in jeans and a black shirt, was spotted earlier this afternoon running through the maternity ward, looking for his wife's birthing suite.
"Run, daddy, run!" shouted a super excited Kingston, who was leading his father along.
Stefani had looked ready to burst for some time. In fact, today wasn't the first time a hospital run set off the stork alert.
On Aug. 7, the No Doubt frontwoman also got paparazzi in a tizzy when she showed up at Cedars-Sinai for what turned out to be a simple 30-minute checkup.
News of the pregnancy first broke back in January, when Gavin's father, Douglas Rossdale, confirmed the bun in the oven.

The next day, Pam filed for divorce and publicly stated that she contracted the Hepatitis C virus from him (supposedly from sharing tattoo needles). Now they're living together again. One of the great rock bust-ups ever. Boyd was a London model, had a bit part in A Hard Day's Night, and was the obsession of every London rocker. Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Ron Wood, and Eric Clapton all wanted to get next to her. George got her, but not for long. In 1973, they divorced and Patti picked up with Clapton. The classics "Something" and "Layla" were written as love letters to her. But they keep the royalties.

Joe Jonas has fuelled rumours he’s more than just friends with country star Taylor Swift.
Rumours started swirling about the pair last month but Taylor denied she was dating the Jonas Brothers star saying she and the brothers were “all friends” but earlier this month, Joe was evasive about the issue when questioned about the supposed romance saying: “She’s a great girl … I think anybody would love to go on a date with her.”
The pair have now fuelled further rumours after Joe made a solo covert appearance in the crowd at Taylor’s gig supporting the Rascal Flatts in Miami at the weekend.
An onlooker at the gig told People magazine: “I spotted Joe quickly, but he was trying to hide from the crowds by tucking in-between a few people. He was wearing a baseball cap and real casual dress so he wouldn’t stand out.
“He watched only her performance, then walked backstage to the meet and greet area. But when he saw people start to recognize him, he hid. It was real obvious he didn’t want people to know he was there to see Taylor.”

Joe Jonas has fuelled rumours he’s more than just friends with country star Taylor Swift.
Rumours started swirling about the pair last month but Taylor denied she was dating the Jonas Brothers star saying she and the brothers were “all friends” but earlier this month, Joe was evasive about the issue when questioned about the supposed romance saying: “She’s a great girl … I think anybody would love to go on a date with her.”
The pair have now fuelled further rumours after Joe made a solo covert appearance in the crowd at Taylor’s gig supporting the Rascal Flatts in Miami at the weekend.
An onlooker at the gig told People magazine: “I spotted Joe quickly, but he was trying to hide from the crowds by tucking in-between a few people. He was wearing a baseball cap and real casual dress so he wouldn’t stand out.
“He watched only her performance, then walked backstage to the meet and greet area. But when he saw people start to recognize him, he hid. It was real obvious he didn’t want people to know he was there to see Taylor.”
When questioned about the visit, Taylor’s publicist stuck to the “just friends” line but in a statement released through the spokesperson, Taylor added: “He’s an amazing guy and anybody would be lucky to be dating him.”

OK so last night my parents told me they were getting divorced so i started to majorly cry right away my brother mad a comment that mad me really mad and said so when dad moves out can i sleep in your bed? and my sister knew before me i guess i was the only one but i was really sad and mad my mom had always told me she would never get divorced my parents always fought and stuff and i would always get really worried and ask my mom if she was gonna run away from daddy ( i was little!) but i knew it was coming my parents had been talking a lot every night and copying a lot of papers and they have both been gone a lot but when they told me i was kinda still shocked and really sad and now i still am and i am really really worried and well still sad!

Alright so sadly school starts soon so a lot of people will sadly be on a lot less including me and yes for all those Jonas Hater things will get a bit better for you because people wont be talking about them as much but i will still try to get as much as possible after school and after homework i still have until September 2nd but after that i wont be on until about 5 pm so see you then and later!

Jonas Brothers Fighting! ( What Do U Think About It??)
I LOVE the Joas Brothers but a lot of people at sodahead are getting tired of JoBro lovers but i must say i am also getting very anoyed with the mean pools about the JoBros that the haters have been posting lately asking if people are annoyed and stuff if jonas fans answer them and say they love them or anything like that you get tons of mean replies i think poll like those only make things worse and cause Jonas Fans to only make even more polls about them i think the hateing should stop and those who hate the Jonas Brothers should just ignore the polls and we can try to make less but for some reason that seems hard to do.
