OMG they did it :o
I thought it was legend, really.
In the old building that used to house the Institute, there was a wonderful auditorium. It was all dark wood, big stage, curtains, nice chairs and many general portraits on the walls.
(one of) the Institute legends repeated among the enlisteds way back when was about the portrait of General S. He was shown holding a cigarette. The legend went that the brass wanted to paint out the cigarette, but they were not allowed to do it unless they bought the painting @whatevermillion$ so they never did.
Well, its been many years now and we haven't been in the old building for a long time. The new auditorium is bland, boring and small :P and there are no portraits.
But this afternoon I was leaving the building and there was General S. on the wall near the front door. The ol' guy is no longer smoking. Guess it wasn't legend after all!

I guess they don't need any contributions
After all, they are treating the least of those among them as they would wish to be treated.

Galveston prisoners still in jail
By Mike Ward | Friday, September 12, 2008, 03:08 PM
An estimated 1,000 prisoners remained locked in the Galveston County Jail this afternoon, as the Hurricane Ike began battering the island city with flooding.
County officials earlier had ordered a mandatory evacuation for all residents. Sheriff’s officials insisted the prisoners *and jailers* were safe and sound, in a 2-year-old building designed to withstand hurricanes.
A sheriff’s office spokesman said the plan was for the prisoners and jailers to weather the storm in place — unless an evacuation took place later today. Sheriff’s office spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo told the Houston Chronicle that the reason for not evacuating the prisoners is a security issue and cannot be discussed,
Even so, he said, “the prisoners and their safety and well-being are paramount and it will be handled.”
In Austin, several legislative offices early this afternoon lodged angry complaints with Galveston County and state officials that the jail had not been evacuated — and perhaps would not be.
Forecasters earlier warned that Ike’s storm surge of as much as 20 feet is possible — a level that would put water 3 feet over the top of Galveston’s seawall.
Galveston and state emergency management officials early this afternoon said they were checking on the situation at the jail.

What to do, what to do..
Three stalls in the restroom. Full. I was in one. I was minding my own business when the soldier in the stall next to me started singing. The Star Spangled Banner no less.
I don't know what the proper thing to do is when one hears our national anthem but are... busy.

word order
Word order can be sort of important.
For instance, I just learned there is a critical difference between
"my feet hurt" and "I hurt my foot"
Doctor said I sprained it :p

Truth in advertising?
I was driving home. Got behind this slow car. I noticed that there was a tattered old "Rookie Driver" bumper sticker on the bumper.
Sure enough. The "R" had been torn off.

are they kidding?
I keep seeing ads from my cable company, they want me to switch my phone and internet service to their company.
I keep loosing cable signal, i can never get them on the phone, they don't show up for 'appointments' (with 5 hour windows, and I take off work)
Why on earth would I trust them with any other services???

Bury the #$*@ cables already
I have lived in this area for mumbletymublety years and Pepco always says it can't bury the power cables because it is too expensive.
Well we had a bad thunderstorm AGAIN and power went out all over AGAIN and this time one person died. (not from lack of power, though - falling tree)
Two huge county school systems were closed yesterday because of the power outages. Driving to and from w*rk was a nightmare because of traffic lights out, roads closed, cop cars, once blocking the street so no one could go straight through in one direction (the way I was going, natch) and coming home there were like seven cop cars around an accident. One lane getting through.
Not to mention the power cutting in and out at w*rk. Bleeding beeping alarms going off incessantly.
Every time the weather turns bad, windy, stormy, snowy, icy -- WHATEVER the power goes out to so many tens or hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses and traffic signals.
BURY THE &%$#^@G cables already!

So I'm driving along
across an intersection. I'm in the right lane. Next thing I know, after I'm across the intersection, the cars in front of my are all switching lanes back and forth. Half the cars in the right lane go to the left and half the cars in the left lane switch to the right. No, it did not go smoothly.
So, I have to wonder (since there is no obvious advantage to being one lane or the other) WHY NOT JUST GET IN THE LANE YOU NEED TO BE IN?
