Should U.S Muslim students be allowed to wear head scarves?
In the July 30th edition of Newsweek, here,
people were asked whether Muslim students should be allowed to wear head scarves. This has been an issue in France where they banned students from displaying their religion in public schools. Whether it be a cross or a head scarf.
What do you think SodaHead? Should Muslim students in the US be allowed to wear head scarves? Should they restrict it? Do you think this causes problems at school?

Children shouldn't be discriminated against because they are Muslim.

And since when did we ever follow France's lead? Come on. Even the Righties can agree with me on that.

I used to think that they should be able to... but, in the case of women, vails are used to hide them. Sometimes we allow children to wear vails in schools in order to have a diverse society, but it is at the cost of those poor kids.

Why shouldn't they? Wearing clothing or a religious symbol is not proselytizing.

that would be like me telling you, you cant wear a tee shirt you have to go without one, boy or girl, they shouldn't have to take off anything because they have to receive an education from the state untill they are 16.

THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DRESS ANY WAY THEY WANT.......OR BELIEVE THEY SHOULD.

Not allowing them to dress the way they would like, and that their culture dictates takes away their rights as individuals. Their head scarves are as offensive as a christian cross - they're not.

Its degrading to women if they are forced to do something.

If we can allow students to dress with no self respect for themselves, we should certainly be able to find it acceptable for those who do respect themselves and their religion.

No headscarves in school. And, they should absolutely be required to participate in physical education and every other class that is required of all other students. It is inappropriate for the public school system to allow these exceptions. The US has had many muslims here for decades (remember IRAN in the 70's?) and this was never an issue. If the Muslims don't want to assimilate into OUR public school system, they are free to open their own private school (I guess that would be a mosque) and set their own rules.

If people can wear crosses and other religious paraphenilia then muslims are well within their rights to wear their scarves.

If it is a matter of conviction. The Supreme Court happens to define that as something you are willing to be jailed for or be persecuted for. Sounds like a fair litmus test to me.

sure, let them wear the head scarves, but if you're going to allow muslims to express their culture, let eveyone else do the same (ie confederate americans, christians, etc)

I live in the Detroit area - home to more than 200,000 muslims. They
mainly live in the city of Dearborn. All the schools allow the girls to
wear the head scarves. The girls also get excused from gym and
swimming. Arabic is also taught in the schools. Many in this area think
the school system goes out of its way to accommodate the muslims. The
argument being that if you live in the US, you should take on its
    customs and speak English.

I go to UM-Dearborn, so I totally know where you're coming from. I don't think they should have to take on all of our customs but they shouldn't be excused from anything.

If they are allowed, then they have to let every other religion express itself freely too. I heard a girl in England was not allowed to wear a virginity promise ring b/c it is Christian, yet the Muslims were allowed to wear headscarves. That is plain wrong. All or none.

In general, it should not matter. If they want to, then that should be up to them.
I would only say they must be removed for all official pictures and when needed to for identification reasons. There is NO special exceptions for any other type of religious or other head gear.
If they do not like it, well TOO BAD !!! The muslims are trying to force their religious practicies on the rest of us, little by little.
I am sure the ACLU defends them, because they are for any religion BUT
    Christianity.........
The fact that the ACLU and all the other commie leftist groups like them do not attack any religious beliefs or practices other than Christians proves Jesus true when He said ALL other religions are FALSE, because there is no power in any other religion but Christianity. Only JESUS has the power to convict people of their sins and show the need for Repentance. Jesus was very offensive to the average lost sinner(everyone) All the other false religions have no power to forgive sins, so no body is offended by them.
And that is why the ACLU is not "offended" by any other religious system!!!

Acts 4:12 says "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Most schools restrict hats, bandanas, even sweat bands in class. I don't see why we should make an exception to that rule just to be "Politically Correct".
