I quit cold, i joined the army when i turned 35, and i knew that if i didnt stop before i left for basic training i would be hattin it.I never started back either, i smoked about 15 years.
As bad as i feel now at 40 i can just imagine how much worse i would feel if i still smoked, i felt an almost imediate change when i stoped, but that was also with exercise.

I definitely smoke less, or not at all, when I'm sick. I soon pick them up again when I'm feeling better though. So no, I don't think I could.

if it were life or death you really dont think you could?

Depends if I was feeling ill all the time. If I felt ill then I probably would but if I felt okay, probably not. I have no willpower.

i used to smoke, then one day i just started to think it was disgusting and it made me feel sick so i just stopped doing it. i had no problems at all quitting. i only smoked 2 or so a day anyway but i did feel addicted, i didn't like to go without it. but once i stopped enjoying it i just quit easily. why keep doing something you don't enjoy that is just damaging your health??

    good luck to you!! =)

I quit twice cold turkey. Once for 15 years, and the last time for 8 months. I started after 15 years because I just didn't give a crap anymore, when I was getting divorced. This last time, I started feeling crappy, so I just quit. 8 months ago. When I have a bad day I have been known to take a couple hits off a cigarette, but I barely inhale, and I really can't stand it. It is just one of those things. Your first reaction when things go wrong, your body starts craving the nicotine. But after a few weeks, your lungs don't even want the smoke. So, while I have a pack of cigarettes in my purse, for those emergencies, they are getting very stale. If I take more than three hits off a cigarette, I must really be having a bad day! Good luck!

lungs smoke pack cigarettes purse emergencies stale hits cigarette luck

When my grandpa quit here's what he did: For one week Start with a old jar. Fill it half way up with water. Every time you have a cig, ash and put out the cig in the jar. At the end of a week drink it. It worked for him. I think it would take something like that for me to quit.

My husband and I both quit cold turkey, just because we wanted to and needed to, for our own well being. I have not missed those things one minute, and can hardly stand to smell them on anyone else. People who smoke do not realize how bad they smell to other people. The nicotine gets into your hair follicles and the pores of your skin and causes you to have a terrible body odor, plus bad breath and yellow teeth. After you quit, your sense of smell and taste improve. Food will taste better to you and your nose will detect things that you had not been aware of for years. All it takes is wanting to quit. If you do not have that desire, then nothing you do will help you. We've been off them for 6 years now, and never sorry we quit. We could not have afforded the bad habit anyway. But cold turkey is the best way to quit instead of trying to do it a little bit at a time. It's just mind over matter.

ty im glad to hear your story....although, i work at a hospital around many non smokers and my smell never gave me away they had no idea i smoked at all...it is a hygene issue i think with the smell, some wear pants 2x before wash and that too can contribute to smoke smell..or a confined space when smoking such as the car etc...

Try keeping some carrot sticks or fresh vegetables around to chew on when you get the urge to light up too. That will help. Good Luck!
