But only if you know how to use one, especially with children.

Anyone could have access to it even if it was locked. And just to say, the police could get suspicious if they ever have a search warrant(but that won't happen). I think something like a baseball bat is better.

    A baseball bat?

As a weapon of last resort, sure.

But when facing someone intent on doing you harm, I'll maintain as much distance as I can. Remember the idea here is to protect yourself without getting injured doing it.
  • raves +1   [-] by AZNangel715
That is true but you don't want to injure anyone else in the process. There is a chance that you could miss shooting the burglar and hit someone else.
  • raves +1   [-] by volkl77
Everything you do involves some level of risk.

There's a chance you could slip in the shower and crack your head open.

    I don't want to be too graphic, but using your bat example again;
If he has a gun, you'll never get the opportunity to swing it.
If he has a knife, and you swing and miss, you won't get a second chance. It's over.

Yes there is the risk, that you could miss and injure someone else. But in your scenario there is a certainty that if you don't act you will be injured.

I don't know if you know of Dennis Miller since your fairly young, but he puts it very well when he says "If you're going to go to war, Go Roman"

It could be safer If somebody broke in and you had your gun in a good place. But it could be dangerous if you have kids around the house they could kill themself or the other kid.

    Depends on who's around.
Obviously it wouldn't be safe to have around children.
Either way, I'm not a big fan of guns.
They can't be used for any good.

Safer....that's why it is in our constitution. Long as you use it responsibly and don't shoot it into the air on New Years or the 4th of July. what goes up...must come down.

I'm curious to know how many people here have had their house broken into. And of those who have, how many actually encountered the person breaking in? I hear a lot of people from the suburbs adamant about having guns... seems a little ironic.
  • raves +3   [-] by Vastrightwingconspiracy
You've answered your own question and didn't even know it. No one breaks into houses with armed homeowners behind the door. In my community, almost everyone owns guns, and guess what? right! no one gets shot and very seldom does a home get broken into. If it happens, it's usually by a young crackhead who knows his\her victim.
synopsis:Crime rates are really low and gun ownership is really high.

Yes I have had two people attempting brake into my house, about 12:30 AM. One tried to kick in the back door, when I got up with my 357 magmun fully loaded and ready to unload the look out standing at a window of a empty bed room seen me and yelled at the top of his lungs his got a gun. They ran so fast that all I could see was the old saying rearends and elbows. The police found their feet prints outside the house and the back door damaged, I was told by the police that it was a good thing I had a gun. Because they said anyone that would force their way into a home with cars in the drive way did not come to be nice.

Gina it is not about the past as it is so much the future. It takes one time, just one time, for someone to change your life irreversibly with violence. Gun safety is a big part of gun ownership. I do think that they should have some type of psyche evaluation, not unlike an eye test, before you are permitted to carry a gun, just like I think a person should have to go through gun safety classes, just like a driver's license before they are permitted to carry a gun. A gun in the hands of a responsible person is a tool. A gun in the hands of someone who is mentally unstable, criminal, and or irresponsible is a tragedy waiting to happen. Does this mean a gun will save your life if you have one? No. The other guy may be a better shot or faster on the draw. What it does mean is that you have a fighting chance in a situation where someone absolutely intends you harm.

We had our home broken into, and luckily we were not home at the time, but had we been home I am more thankful we had our gun then not, because at least we would have been able to defend ourselves against the intruder, one shot in the air, and I am pretty sure the scum would be running out the nearest exit he could find! A telephone call to 911 does not always mean a good outcome to the sitiuation! I'll take my chances with my guns rather then be a sitting duck to a criminal.

Gina I will give you a story told to me by a friend from the Phillipines. He said we were lucky to have the second amendment protection. Asked why he said the y have to bar the doors and windows against thugs over there. Told him they do that here. His reply was that I did not understand. On two story houses they also bar the stairwell so if the thugs bust through they hopefully will not make it up top. That is sad.

safer for the homeowner, but there falls upon the gunowner a responsibility at the same time to keep it out of the hands of children and or others who may harm themselves or innocents.

It depends who else lives in the house and the person that owns the guns mental stability.

    Answered Undecided

Honestly, I think it all depends on the person who owns them. I certainly wouldn't feel safe if someone told me they kept their gun under their pillow. No telling how trigger happy one can be in the heat of the moment. BUT, if they are repsonsible, they would put their weapons in a case under lock and key. I have a small hand gun in my closet. I keep it in a small box but in a quick to reach spot just in case someone breaks in.

    Answered Undecided

I think it all depends on the people living in the house. If they take proper precautions to make sure the gun is locked up where children can't get to it AND they know how to properly use it, then it's probably safe.

calls to 911 take 10-15 min. at best, police arrive, then do the investigation after you're hurt or dead. case closed.

Criminals might think twice before they come in your house to rob you or harm you if they know they might be looking down the barrel of a gun, if their to stupid to think and chances are they might be you can blow their head off, everyone is safer if they have the option of self defense.

    Answered Undecided

The world is basically a dangerous place to live. I don't see that having a gun in the house, if properly handled, makes it more dangerous. But unless you need it for protection, it doesn't make it safer either. But the thought that you might have a gun in the house might. Unfortunately, when the police stop someone, the thought that anyone might have a gun can make it more deadly.
