Do you think that comedian Carlos Mencia is a hack?

Comedian Carlos Mencia has taken some heat recently from competing stand up comics, accusing him of stealing jokes. They also suggest that he's not really Mexican, but of honduran and german decent, which makes his Mexican jokes appear a bit racist. However, he remains a very popular comic and his defenders insist that the similarity in comedic content is only a coincidence.

Help me understand who is right in this argument. Is Carlos Mencia a hack?

See media center and trivia for examples of alleged joke theft.

Doesn't everyone lift material from everyone else? People accuse Dane Cook of being a hack and stealing material as well. I think it is a bit of jealousy due to the huge success of both comics.

How can anyone find this guy funny? His material is trite and cliche, he BLATANTLY steals jokes, he has been called out numerous times by people like Joe Rogan yet IDIOTS continue to support his hack ways. STOP SUPPORTING NED HOLNESS!

It's one thing to have similar jokes; it's another to blatantly rip someone else off. Besides, every Carlos Mencia joke--on his show--seems to come back to race. After a while, it gets pretty old.

i think all comedians take from each other. Many of them write material for more accomplished comedians. I dont really like Mencia's brand of humor but that is just me. It's all a matter of taste.

He said that people that lived in states that got hit by tornados were stupid and needed to get a brain and move. IDIOT does not have a brain himself to realize half the country is in TORNADO ALLEY, and God Bless the victims each and every year. Since 8 Mexicans were killed in Eagle Pass Texas on the Mexican Border last I wonder if he feels they were stupid. 1 entire family were wiped out. DUMB ASS

He's only a hack in the sense that he steals all his material. Otherwise, no.

The guy is fresh and real. I am not Mexican and I do believe he's hilarious. I get a totally different message. He is talking about the pride of being Hispanic and that is his approach!!! There are a lot of unsuccessful comedians out there that are simply jealous and cannot handle his success. Comedy is an art form and so is satire. He might offend a few people but he surely amuses the majority of his audience.

He's abrassive beyond Chris Rock's style, appeals to the the LCD of race comedy beyond Chappell, and he's stupider than George Lopez. Some of his toned down and original ideas are funny but he is proof to the point that you can not lump people of Hispanic descent into one pool.

Interesting. I've never seen nor heard him perform before, but based just on the examples given, it sure looks like he's plagiarized. On the other hand, it might be a coincidence, or unintentional. Hard to tell.

Fran Drescher doesnt talk in that voice except when she's acting, Rodney Dangerfield's real name was Jacob Cohen, and 50 Cent doesnt really do everything he says in his songs. Entertainers are entertainers, but their just that. Trying to find deeper meaning on issues brought up from their entertainment is like getting upset about someone having a brain transplant on One Life To Live . He's funny cause he's funny and where exactly all his stuff came from doesnt matter to me. Its funny the way he says it, so if you didnt say it first then YOUR BAD!!! And thats all I'll say about that, lol

i dont really like mind of mencia and kind of think of it as the mexican version of chappelle show. whether or not he stole material, im getting kind of sick of "white people do this...black people do that and mexican people do this" kind of jokes.

Either way, I always assumed that once you said it a joke it was up for grabs. How can you claim you were the first person to ever say a joke? Even in the case of being the first to record it, as in Joe's example of stealing guitar riffs, that still doesnt prove you actually wrote it, you could have just been the first to record it. I dont know. There just jokes.

Wow that video is hard to watch. Painful
  • raves     [-] by sovator
yeh i felt/feel bad for him. but i guess he deserves it since joe makes a pretty compelling case that he did in fact lift material.

He stole material from George Lopez and is in fact from Honduras which makes him a racist and a hack!
  • raves +1   [-] by the vin-man
I think your splitting hairs. What does it matter that he's from Honduras, or Guatamala or Costa Rica. He's still latino.Thats like me getting persecuted for saying I'm Italian when I'm actually Sicilian.

I think he's funny, regardless of if he loots others jokes. Other comedians are jealous of his sucess and the fact that he can deliver their jokes better than they can. Some comedians or funny on stage and other are just funny on paper. Get over it.
