Do you think it's time we stop helping other countries and just take care of our own?
Other nations are hoarding their food supply by banning exports to other countries. Times are getting hard for everyone around the world as well as for us here in America. I think that we need to continue to be as supportive as possible around the world, this demonstrates around the world the values and compassion of us as a people and friendly nation. It also serves to open a dialogue between nations that might not otherwise ocurr. We need to maintain our image as a strong moral and democratic nation that respects sovereignty and their back yards with an international consensus to where we are invited to the table. To stop our humanitarian generosity now, a time of need would be regressive. What we should do is compell our leaders and policy makers to look in the mirror, something they are currently reluctant to do to address our own national shortfalls and not let Iraqs happen again. I personally am hoping that things are going to change after this next election if the candidate I am choosing follows through. -

It sounds kind of harsh.. but we are really getting into trouble.. it's amazing how much money we are sending on a daily basis .. to countries that don't necessarily need it.. and we have growing poverty over here.. -

I am all for helping others but not to the detriment of oneself, that is for friends, family and country alike. You must first be able to care for you then you are able to care for others. It is a basic premise, that is why airlines say to place your oxygen mask on first. The USA needs our oxygen mask before we can help others with theirs. -

Pretty selfish attitude but one that we should've adopted many, many years ago. Especially when the other countries aren't paying back the money we're lending them. If you add up, and get repaid on all of our outstanding loans, we could probably do away with the IRS, fix social security, and provide health care for all those without. Among other things.
This country really needs to cut the foreign aide and start concentrating on things at home before things become worse....Which won't be long at the rate we're going. -

I have nothing against helping out other counties AFTER we get our own country taken care of. When we have no more homeless and hungry people here and people can actually afford to drive to work then sure, help out other countries. I hate the thought of kids starving anywhere but think our own should come first. -

We need to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq. We need to stop the subsidy for corn growers/ethanol makers. We need to shore up our borders. We need to stop selling America piecemeal to the highest bidder. We need to encourage family farms, not corporate farms owned by people overseas. We need our heads examined to find out why we keep electing morons. -

I think our help ought to be more balanced. I do not think we can just stop helping other countries as we are still much better off than many, but I do think we need to get our priorities straight... help the right people, in the right way, for the right reasons. -

it is way past time.... the sooner the better! i would also like to add.. when aid is given to other nations from our food supplies .. it angers me to the point of hatred.. when public programs to feed underprivleged kids over the summer and through the year are cut... there is no reason for anyone in this nation to be going without nourishment... period! -

We need to fix things here at home before we start supporting other countries. How is it that we have money to send to poor children in other countries, while our own are living on the streets starving? -

WE should end the war in Iraq where most of our money is going....decrease foreign military aid, but maintain food, health and educational help, which are a fraction of the money we spend on mi;itary aids. -

Let them stand on their own. We bailed them out and they refuse to pay us back.The time has come to take care of "home".... and that means us.
