There are certain chemical signatures, such as a stable, predominantly oxygen atmosphere, that can be picked up spectrascopically. Will we know what sort of life that is? No.
If it's an intelligent species we could also detect any radio/laser transmissions. Will we be able to then establish meaningful dialogue? No. Liberal values in the Drake equation suggest that the nearest such civilization to us wouldn't be within 800-lightyears. That means if we sent them a greeting, they detected it and sent a similar greeting back, it would be 1,600 years between our sending and our receiving their reply. No one alive even remembers sending the signal. -

Yes, I think we will once we realize that 'life' is not always what we as humans believe it to be. Example, Datura plants have a poison in them that kills human beings in very tiny quantities... but its in their 'blood'. The fact that we humans cant have that chemical in us and survive does not in any way nullify the plants 'life' or existance.... it just makes it very different from 'life' as we know it to be.
Heck,, I think we humans are just starting to understand what 'life' really is on this planet.. the planet ITSELF is alive.
