Stop the silliness - sex education, social skills - I sure haven't seen any positive impacts from these unless higher teen pregs and rotten behavior is what they were intended to do. Provide more than one path - higher ed and vocational for others.
Teach the basics well - some of these kids cannot make a complete sentence. English, math, science - No more dumbing down - test scores do not exceed 100 : 90-100=A, 80-90=B, 70-80=C; 60-70 = D Less than 60 F. And using red pens is not destroying little Johnny's psychologically; And leave little Johnny's philosophy to his parents.
And last - Teachers - your job is to teach - if little Johnny can't read or do simple math - you should lose your job. Sorry teachers, not trying to piss you off but I have to meet standards on my job and I think a minimum standard is right for teachers too.

i'm still in school & with all the budget cuts, it's making it harder to give kids the proper education they need to succeed in life & go where they want to go in life.

Some say the academic level of American high school is equivalent to that of junior high school in most advanced countries.

The American school system is behind the rest of the "Developed World." We can blame our over-bearing, big-brother, federal government for that. And of course the vicious cycle continues with terrible parents breeding more terrible parents. But that is what the government wants; dumb Americans.

I think sports shouldn't be such a big deal, and I know by saying that I'm probably going to have to start sleeping in a coffin again but it's true schools place too much value on athletes.

I think Math, Science adn Ebglish should be pushed in order to improve the chances of the children as they enter high school or college. Unfortunately, many of them can not read well at athta level....Also, students whao are not college bound should be afforded special trainings so they can learn a trade to make a decent living....

It depends on the area and the school. My daughter is in a school that is designated "needs for improvement" but she does really well because not only is teaching done at school but needs to be reinforced at home. I try my best to fill the gaps so she does not get got in one. Shes extremely shy but very smart.

Of course, 'No Child Left Behind' should take care of all that ... right?

Oh, wait. High school drop outs are on the rise, teachers are being forced to teach to test not to learn, everyone in the classroom is supposed to be the same, Special Education students who are working four or five grade levels below their classmates are still expected to perform on the same level as their classmates ... huh ... maybe 'No Child Left Behind' is leaving 'All Children Left Behind'.

It is staggering to think that educators got together and determined this to be a good idea. As a conservative, I am aware that President Bush thinks this is the best thing since sliced bread. I have said it before and I'll say it again. Bush was a wolf in sheep's clothing in my opinion. He was better than the alternatives, (sounds like '08). He is not my guy.
The only logical conclusion I can draw from this is that was an attempt to sound noble and get votes. "All men were created equal".That refers to constitutional rights, and In God's Eyes. Fact is, no two people are the same. I cannot hit a major league fast ball, give a person a haircut, or fly an airplane. I am a Master electrician, with my own business. Let the teachers decide which student belongs where and on what level. If the student is disruptive and refuses to learn, LEAVE THE CHILD BEHIND. I don't want the brat influencing my kid. If the bad apple comes from a bad background, that is the background's(parents or lack of) fault. It is unfair for the teacher and other students to suffer Because of the carelessness of others.

As a Stubborn, proud American, I don't our schools are inadequate, compared to the rest of the world. To much blame is put on schools when our kids do bad. Schools have no power to discipline bad behavior. They can't even expel kids in many districts. I think our problems are societal problems and selfish parents that want the schools to raise there kids. In that respect, schools need to start sending the kids home that aren't there to learn, and only there for a social gathering. Parents will then have to raise and discipline there own kids, God forbid. Only then will we see motivated, teachers and students.

We are behind much of the world in many areas but I can't say that we are "inadequate compared to the rest of the world" because I don't know of any particular area in which we rank last.

In my opinion, the world needs problem solvers much more than it needs a larger and more uniform herd of educated human cattle. Okay, so the large corporations would like everyone who's not them to learn what they need to know in order to serve the production demands of the large corporations so that the rich and powerful can have their goods and serviced provided to them cheaply and efficiently by complacent servants, but I would rather see a better future for everyone than a better present for the lucky few followed by the demise of humankind brought on by a deficient mindset and a lack of adaptability.

As an example... try this.... Ask someone to solve these math problems...

    ---

    10 + 1 =

    what is nine plus three?

Four more than seven is how much?

The sum of 5 + 9 is what number?

    8 + 3 =

If joe walks 13 miles on Monday morning, stops for a half hour lunch break, and then walks 27 more miles before getting home and going to bed, how far did Joe walk that day?

    12 more than 6 is?

    2 * 3 =

17 added to 3 equals what?

If a car passes you heading due North at 50 miles per hour, how far South of your position was that car three hours earlier?

    What's 5 plus 5?

If a boat carrying a shipment of eggs weighs 2000 kilograms when it is loaded, ...

If you fill a two liter bottle with water and then pour that water into another two liter bottle, how much water do you then have?

    ----

I just made these up off the top of my head. Now, if you were to try to solve them, you at least know the context in which there were thought up. Give them to an unsuspecting average adult and I'm guessing you'll notice errors that they should have known enough not to make.

Children have no pride in their education. They take it day by
day until they can get out. Not what they can learn and grow. Other
countries their children go to school everyday so they can learn more.
They are so far more advanced than the U.S. children. But it's because
they want to. I've seen so many come here from other countries that
just graduated high school and they are on our college level mentality.

    It is a poor joke.

"No child left behind"... I cringe everytime I hear those words...

Instead of working with the students who have problems, they just "move them forward" and they have not learned anything.

We need to go back 50 or more years and start "teaching" kids to read, write, and comprehend instead of wondering what they will eat for lunch.

We are better than many places in the world. But we don't even compare to our old standards. We are graduating people from college that wouldn't have gotten out of HS in my time there.

I believe that continued education should be more focused on their major. I believe electives serve no purpose increasing students work load for no reason other than a more profitable position for the schools. Other countries are more fild focused.
