Should the taxpayers bail out what appears to be a failing American auto industry because they resist alternatives and mpg? The foreign companies didn't.?

Keep in mind that it takes 5 years to bring a new model/product to market.

Actually, most US manufacturers make cars in the EU for the EU market - meeting their strict requirements. Why don't they do that here? Because the American public wanted BIG trucks and SUVs and that's what they made. So, now they need to re-tool and start producing smaller, more econimical vehicles. But, I shouldn't have to bail them out with my tax dollars because of their past greed. Instead, reduce the executives salaries and re-tool to build smaller, more economical vehicles.

We are not a socialist nation, although that's what the dems want.

the bailouts don't qualify as a socialist vig. and the dems will have to bear the weight as well as your party. I have a prblem with it and im a 37 year dem and proud of it! My politics are more like my religious beliefs these days in that i attempt to discern what is right, and then i choose. I don't see a flag pin on your lapel.

I'm sorry. I can't see a point in anything you typed. And yes, when tax payers bail companies out, that IS a socialist move.

it just seems like they have been waiting for someone else to bail them out for the last 10 years. They need to get up off their behinds and start using their heads and create a solution to this problem. Why should it take 5 years, i think thats a load of crap. We never get ahead of the game in this country and that just seems how big business and bro want to keep it. Its time for boycotting.. unless we do we are going to be enslaved to this oil crisis for a long long time.

i think this question is a little misleading. it states that all the american auto industries problems, come from not being green this is not true, GM has been working on hydrogen for many years now. Ford and GM have hybrids, and Chrysler has gas saving technologies. A lot of the financial problem are from the deals they did in the 50's 60'd and 70's with the UAW, pay-rates, healthcare, and retirements. The Government should not bail them out.

tank u for the info, i read listen and deduce sometimes. It wasn't intended at the green thing it was directed at the tech failure and to little to late market share we end up with. Im 58 and have seen this senario before.

They made money in the good times, they can use that to fix their mistakes.
  • raves     [-] by Edventure
Neo they get huge tax breaks but have lost sight or choose too, use the tax break to fatten their wallets and not reinvest for the purpose that they qualified for the break. The trickle-down concept is defeated by this, a time when they are downsizing and going off-shore. We need to reform the breaks because the market place and strategies are a different dynamic today, particularly with the global transition.

Then they go out of business. If I dont run business right there are no bailouts.Should be the same accross the board.Let them fail.
  • raves +1   [-] by Edventure
I agree, however we need an appropriate safety-net for the employees and their family.

They will get unemployment and will have to find new jobs just like the rest of us.They are being layed off by the thousands as it is now.

I agree with you, but if you put all your cards in a career, manufacturing cars, it is very specialized. They may not have had any other education or posses other skills. Some of these people have been born via generations in their trade and may need some help re-training or channeling their skill from an industry that has been sold out from under us. That's what i mean about a safety-net. I don't know your profession or career of choice but for a moment swap shoes.

There are some skilled jobs in the plant but most are unskilled, doing the same thing every day.My brother in law is working at the nissan plant(for now) and I did work there for a short time years ago.For the most part they give you a task to do on the line and thats all you do every day.
Nissans new trick is getting rid of the higher paid people and replacing them with cheap temps.
The bigger problem is the illegals driving down wages for the labor jobs which in turn is driving down the wages of the factory jobs.
  • raves +1   [-] by Edventure
Wow. I know about the illegals because my brother worked in las Vegas, in the hotel industry. They went on strike over that and were defeated because the fix was in and the hotels got their wish. That's why i have concerns with the immigration policy as it relates to our American work force and economy.
  • raves     [-] by Neo- Remember the Deleted
In the construction field the wages have dropped around here by about 1/3 in the last 10 years because illegals can be hired cheaper.I refuse to hire them and pay my guys a good wage. Its the right thing to do and the guys will go the extra mile for me.
If I can be competitive doing it the right way that means its all about greed with the companies that do hire them.
  • raves +1   [-] by Edventure
Well, its happening here as well. The problem is two-fold, The contractors are trying to compete and stay in business and its almost impossible if your a small and growing company. The other failure we have to be cognizant of is that the current powers are allowing this to go on unchecked at the expense of the people that pay their salaries. They gotta go!
  • raves     [-] by Neo- Remember the Deleted
    I can agree with that!
