In a new study, researchers found that as people grow older, genetics influence their decisions with such things as who they befriend:
"As people mature, genetic factors may strongly influence who they choose as their friends, a U.S. study finds." [ . . .]
"As we grow and move out of our home environment, our genetically influenced temperament becomes more and more important in influencing the kinds of friends we like to hang out with," lead author Dr. Kenneth S. Kendler, professor of psychiatry and human genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Medicine, in Richmond, said in a prepared statement.
This kind of research may help improve understanding of who may be at risk for future substance abuse or other "externalizing" behaviors such as conduct and antisocial personality disorder, the researchers said."

Answered Sometimes it can but I think it really comes down to the person's choice.
Obviously we are influenced by our nature. But socially, some genetic traits might effect your choices. For example, you might be a male and have a very high voice, so you have trouble getting a date with a woman. But that's the extent of genetics influencing behavior, and the claim that behaviors like homosexuality, ADD, or alchoholism are genetic are fraudulent. -
Answered Yes! That makes total sense...
Yes, but I suspect that it's difficult to quantify. It probably affects some more than others. I have noticed that the older I get (now 53), the more regrets I have and the shorter life seems. It makes me want to rush a bit more to accomplish various projects that are of a long-term nature. -

My father was an alcoholic, but not one of his six children have a drinking problem. It is a matter of choice for us.
But we have all picked up different characteristic's of my father and mother to. Not sure that all are choices. Alot of mine has to do with feelings that I have that one or both of my parnets had that may be genetic in personalities. -

Our intelligence, our tallents, our physical abilities, and to some degree, our health, are all determined or influenced by our genetics. So, yes, I think these things and many other genetic factors, probably do influence our life choices to a large degree, not completely, though. -

I'm not one to judge here. I was adopted, but I do believe there are things I do that are unlike anyone else in my family. My brother is my parents' natural son and I sure see a lot of Mom and Dad in him. I love to kid him about some of the things he does now that drove us both NUTS about our parents when we were kids...it makes him so mad!!! -
Answered No. I don't really believe that.
I have been best friends with the same group for over 30 years and, in some cases, even longer. We have cried together, laughed together, danced together, traveled together and would give each other a kidney if need be. I look upon them as my extended family. My children and grandchildren call them "Aunt" or "Uncle". What do genetics have to do with choosing friends? "New friends are silver. Old friends are gold".

I think genetics and the person's living environment are probably two of the most influential factors in decisions we all make in life.
