On this july 4th, we should look not only at our nation, But at ourselves. I say this for I have fallen victim to my own self. It wasn't till I recieved a email , that I remembered why this nation is so great. Just for the record I always thought this nation was great. But sometimes you feel over whelmed by reading some folks post on here crying about racism. Well for those I like to point out that they have Clearly over looked some of america's greatest patriots. Who you may ask, Or Dogg's an ass some would say. To those I share this with you. and wish you all a very happy 4th

WALK OF LIFE
%%headline%%Indians repeat long trek to raise nation's awareness
Thursday, July 03, 2008
BY LAUREN BOYER
Of The Patriot-News
With his long, braided hair and American Indian heritage, Eagle Boy Coe has fielded dozens of questions from eager Pennsylvanians who want to know what it's like to live in a hide-covered tent or ride a horse into the sunset.

"I tell them we're just like everyone else," Coe said. "We just have a native twist."

His home in Pittsburgh doesn't have room for a tent.

Like people in much of the rest of the modern world, he drives a car. But this week, he doesn't need it.

Coe joined a group of 100 American Indians from tribes across the United States who camped Tuesday night in Gifford Pinchot State Park, a rest stop on the Longest Walk 2, a cross-country journey that started five months ago at Alcatraz Island in San Francisco.

The travelers seek to spread the message "All Life is Sacred: Save Mother Earth," picking up litter along the 4,400-mile journey and commemorating the first Longest Walk.

That event began in 1977, when 11 bills were introduced in Congress that threatened to dissolve American Indian reservations and hinder tribal self-rule.

"The kind of ethics they are talking about fits right in the mission of state parks. I'm glad they're here," said Bill Rosevear, manager of Pinchot Park. "The value of being good stewards of the earth, I think, is part of the reason why I even have a job."

Codorus State Park near Hanover was the group's next stop, on Wednesday, before the walk concludes in Washington, D.C., Monday.

After 1,500 Longest Walk marchers arrived in Washington on July 15, 1978, the bills they opposed were defeated and Congress passed 50 legislative proposals.

Those included the Native American Freedom of Religion Act, which permitted indigenous people to practice their faiths freely.

Coe's brother, Cody, 30, of Pittsburgh, was in Washington with his parents that day.

He just doesn't remember it.

"I was born during the last walk," Cody Coe said. "To stand up for your rights, you do what you have to do. People dropped their whole lives to do this. "

Charles Yellow Bird and his daughter Liberty, 6, members of the Oglala Lakota tribe, did just that, abandoning their lives on a South Dakota reservation to join the Longest Walk 2.

While walking, Yellow Bird carries a staff with ribbons and feathers that represent challenges faced by American Indian tribes, such as keeping their land and finding clean water.

"I'm not doing this for me," Yellow Bird said. "It's for my child and her children and a lot of children after that. What we do today is going to affect us tomorrow."

Nearly penniless, Yellow Bird said he's worried about being able to get back to South Dakota.

But he hopes his exhausting walk across American highways will spread a message.

"We're still here," he said. "We ain't no myth."

Although he has no American Indian heritage, Art Woolsey of Grantville participated in the 1978 Longest Walk and coordinated the Pennsylvania portion of the event this year.

"This is their land," Woolsey said. "Could you imagine if they just said today that they wanted it back?"

While in the area, the marchers visited the site of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, which was founded in 1879 by Richard Henry Pratt in an attempt to assimilate American Indian children into the culture of the United States.

"It was very emotional," said Caroline Nicotine, a Navajo from Arizona. "The sadness -- the feeling is just there."

"

Now think how far would you go peacfully to make you point, how big of a sacrifice would you do for your rights?

Answered Happy forth , we may not be under brith rule any more, But tyranny is still tyranny

today July 4th is america's birth day. she is 231 years old. I think one of the youngest countries in the world. And with her comes the freedoms and natural treasures that is the envy of all other nations. Her stregth is un macthed, the poeple who live in this borders are reknown for great kindness, and great horrors at the same time. We have face off with world powers greater then our selves at birth. we have face and fought power who would have have her killed, but still we press on. in the acts of god anger and acts of terror we bind our selves as one. And even today, and the country is once more deeply divided in ideas, we can still look to our fellow americain and say they have rights. These right were given to us by god, and to be protected by our goverment are slowly being taken away by the very thing that was made to soley protect them. No one is to blame but ourselves saddly. and it is "we the people" who must once more act out or do our duty to insure this nation does not die as a young lady in her sleep.

This is great. I really applaud them for what they are doing. I agree with Art Woosly from the article this IS their land. It was made sacred from the blood of their ancestors. It is sad but to this day they still have to fight for their rights. They were suppose to be considered Soveriegn nations. Thus the treaties and not just killed off though the Europeans did their best to try that. I will pray that each of them is able to find a way home especially the father with his 6 yr old.

Great poll, we need more Americans like these gentlemen. Being willing to give up almost everything for country family and honor, sound like patriots to me.

We should not take are freedom lightly, as it could vanish tomorrow. We have all seen Bush try to rid us of our freedom.
How anyone can ask us to fight in Iraq and Afghanastan while at the same time slowly stripping away our freedoms and denying our military health and education is beyond me.
We must stick together as a country and fight anyone who wants to destroy our freedoms. Our freedom is worth fighting for here in the good ole USA.
    HAPPY 4TH
