Just now, I was in my Grandmom's house eating and reading the paper, The first thing that catches my attention is the 'entertainment section' and plastered on the front page, A picture of Limewire. I read the article and it's crazy! People are getting caught left and right for the illegal downloading of music thanks to the big greedy music industry clenching for every last dollar they can take out of us music lovers. For me it's just astronomical to think about, Music costing money? That's like air costing money...What doesn't cost money anymore!? What about the ones sitting there only with a broken down computer stealing internet connection? Are they not good enough for music either because they don't have any money but their parent scratches and claws for every last dollar but the Music industry has the audacity to say 'We are looking thousands of dollars out of an already multi-million dollar company' something must be done!
Yes i understand they need to make money to and it effects billboard charts and all that junk but if they don't want us downloading LOWER COSTS! The price of CD's are insane, I don't know about you but i'm not going to waste 20 dollars on a piece of vinyl when i can go on the computer and get it in seconds. Living is expensive enough and that's just neccessities but God forbid you have a thing that makes life living, No that's wrong. It's like
'Oh they are downloading, that's wrong! That's horrible'
but what about the people who live for music and it's entirety, How much money {that i don't have} Does anyone want to put on it, That if they crack down on downloads, Crime rates with go up astronomically because what else is left? Crime is the only thing they can do somewhat entertaining. It's just pathetic and i really cannot believe the world we live in.

The only problem I generally have with downloading is the support for the artist. The music companies are so damn greedy that they take up almost every inch of what the contributor of the album has EARNED. I buy CDs, I know that it is difficult for others to buy because they can't afford it, and its totally understandable. One thing I would reccomend is if its affordable and desired enough, go to the concert, the only way a lot of the bands I listen to are still together is through constant touring. They tour their asses off for like a year straight just to make a decent living, and its a shame that it should cost so much for music. I stay undecided because of the hardship these musicians go through just to do what they love best, and downloading everything all the time may not exactly help the situation. -

As a writer who has my things ripped off regularly I find your take on it uninformed and insensitve as well as unfair. What if the world expected to own the time you spend serving others in work for free? I bet you wouldn't feel that was fair to you. That is how musicians, writers and artists feel. If you don't create it you don't own it and you shouldn't expect it for free. Artists of any genre make their living from the sales of what they have created. Would you work for free and not resent it? I think that is called slavery. Creative works do not belong to the masses until fifty years after an artist's death. Deal with it. If you don't realize you are advocating theft then you are blind. Put yourself in their place. If they sign agreements with record companies to present their materials then you can't deny them the right to conduct their business. How can anyone think they shouldn't pay for music? LAME -
First of all I myself am a writer and I do know how it feels to have my writing taken from me without permission and personally I don't have a problem with it! As long as some one is reading my writing and if I Can make an impact on someones lives or make them think that's enough! Those that are in it for the money aren't real and people can sense that. Did I ever say, I don't buy CD's of course not, I have about 20 CD's sitting to the side of me, I do support my Artists and i go to many Concerts, What I am saying is that, Can they really expect people with little money if any at all to go out and buy these CD's at such astronomical rates, No. CD's and downloads are ridiculously expensive and when Music is what keeps you alive, Should you have to live without that? That's like asking someone to pay for air! I am not advocating theft, I am advocating my own opinions so as you would say it so kindly 'Deal with it'. I rest my case.

I used to be guilty of this....but I'm not anymore...why would you want to rip off the artists you support? They need money to. especially the ones that are just starting out....if everyone stole there music off the internet then they would become to poor to be able to make anymore cds....then what would we do.... -

I totally agree with you. Music is my nicotine, and my family is dirt ass poor. What the music industry doesn't really see though is that they would sell out a lot more venues if music downloading was even more accessible. The reason I don't got to most of the concerts I see is because it's the little guy who hasn't really gotten known yet. If I could get the music in time to decide to go to the concert, who knows, you buy t-shirts and V.I.P. Passes and cds and all that other shit at the concert and if you don't like them, who the hell cares because you're only out of the 99 cents it takes to buy the endless downloads they get to realize they don't like the artist and won't spend another dime on them. What about public radio? Are they going to arrest every kid who records shit from the radio and listens to it on a mix tape? If so, put handcuffs on me now because I would never make it. -

I have a problem with downloading music. I know so many musicians that make nothing, and people downloading their music instead of paying for it is not helping. If you respect someone enough to want their music in your collection, pay for it. Music is my life, and as a musician myself, I completely support the musicians I like. People work hard to make their music, and stealing it is hardly right. I pay for my music, and I always will. If you truely respect the musicians you "support," support them for real. -
Yes but don't you think 'supporting' them is listening to them period, What if you don't have the money to go and buy the CD's what you supposed to do? Live completely without music, To me Music is one of those universal things and almost everyone knows, Musicians wanting to get their big break should always have a job on the side that way when things like this happen it isn't so phenomenal to their bank account.
-
You know what I'd do? I'd make my own. If I couldn't afford to by music, I'd make do with what I had and I'd probably continue with my own. As long as you truely believe that music is there, it's impossible to live without it. I mean, I've spent a week or two away from any sort of electronics and away from my guitar, but there was still music. The songs in my head, the birds and nature around me. All you have to do is listen and music is there. If I want someone's music, I'll pay for it, and I stand by that, it's a matter of respect. And quite frankly, it's a nice way for someone to realize that they're actually wanted. The way you seem to be thinking is that a side job is going to make them a lot of money as well. It's not. A musician who's truely dedicated to their music won't have time for that side job if they intend to work in music, trust me. If I simply just listen to them, it's possible that the musician I like may have to stop doing their music so they can make a living at a normal job. If people continue to steal music, a lot of artists will no longer be able to afford to make their own. Listening is not supporting, supporting is helping them continue on by buying their music.
If you truly love music, there will always be music, no matter how broke you are. Trust me, I've been there. -
I'm not saying side jobs will make them 'a-lot' of money just enough to make ends meet, and anyone who is some what realistic knows that it might not work out...Thousands of people try to make it big every day and by not having a job and depending on luck is just completely idiotic. And in my opinion real musicians don't care about who buys their albums or how much of their albums are bought but the people who listen to them and who they are effecting through their music. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree because to me if I am feeling like nothing is left worth living for and I have a computer there capable of downloading music, Am I going to do it? Hell yes!
-
You have no idea, do you. If you really want to persue music, you generally have to drop everything, pack your bags and tour. Real musicians don't care, but they certainly appreciate support. I am a musician, and I know many, and believe me, none of them support free downloads. Open your eyes up, and stop being so selfish. And don't give me that "nothing is worth living for crap," I've been there, (several times, twice ending up with me in a hospital, despite my attempt at musical intervention), and I don't need to download music to make myself better. I play some music (my own or I put on a cd). By downloading music for free, you're disrepecting the musicians you aparently love. Yes, it's about the music, getting it heard, but if you really respect a musician, you'll help them out. Real musicians care about getting their music heard, and music is hard to be heard if you can't afford to go on making it. Stop being so fucking blind, grow up a little, 'kay? And please don't tell me I've no idea what I'm talking about. I do, I've been there, my friends have been there. I know what I'm talking about.
-
First off, Yes i'm real immature and I need to grow up but since you feel the need to sit there and argue with me about my opinions you must not be much better. Did I ever say I don't Buy CD's when I can? No i do 20 CD's sitting right next to me, I go to many concerts also and tell me when I said that you have no idea what your talking about? Please inform me because I wouldn't be sitting here if I didn't think you didn't know what you were talking about!
-
The arguments you presented me with were as though you thought I was a little kid who couldn't think for herself. Also, it seemed like the direction you were going in. I didn't say I was mature, but at least I can see how the real world works (music industry and I suppose the entertainment industry are both great at disillution and making people think things don't work they way they do). I'm arguing against your opinions because you seem to think that people will continue to put out music even if they can no longer afford to do so. I'm not saying just buying them when you can, but wait until you can pay for your music, as I've said, it's disrepectful not to (unless the musician themself is offering free downloads, that's a bit different).

Although I have downloaded about ... um a few hundred songs... and my brother has downloaded like twice as much and really its not so bad cuz its not like were selling the CD's we burn or whatever. But at the same time it really is like stealing. Although I don't feel guilty cuz its stealing from the evilness of record companys and not the artists. lol. Nickelback literally said in an concert "We don't care if you download our music from Limewire!" But then you have Metallica who sues for downloading their music. But honestly i don't think the artists really care much because you don't take anything from them. its the music industry that cares. But yeah. I agree music is expensive these days when many people NEED music. I just think it should be handled differently is all.. -

It is theft anyway you look at it. You are downloading copyrighted material and the artist is not being compensated for their work. It also hurts those up and coming artists as record companies are not signing as many due to loss of revenues. Did you know that the music industry loose billions to piracy every year?
Answered Yes
yes it should be legal. i used to download a lot but now i buy the cds. the problem with downloading for free is that the artists don't get the money. the stupid music industries steal over half the money as it is. the prices of cds are way too expensive sometimes. if the artists themselves would get the money then yeah, no one should download illegally. since the companies are so greedy i think it should be legalized to download, to teach them a lesson.
