US Olympic Swimmer Eric Shanteau announced recently that he has testicular cancer. Qualifying for the Beijing Games in the 200-metre breaststroke, Eric Shanteau learned of the diagnosis just a week before the recent U.S. Olympic trials in Omaha. Shanteau said he has been advised to have surgery now, which would keep him out of the water for at least two weeks, but he's elected to pursue his dream and continue to prepare for the Summer Games.
Eric Shanteau's doctors said that he is clear to compete because the cancer has not spread, but he will be closely monitored in the weeks preceding Beijing.
Do you think that Eric Shanteau should drop out of the Olympics, or continue to peruse his dream and stand up against testicular cancer?

He should go for it. Look at how many athletes have been diagnosed with cancer over the years, and in some cases the sports and competitions made them stronger. He should take it easy a little bit around treatments and such, but it should in no way make him not able to compete. -

He may not get another chance to. Once you hit 30 you're less likely to be in the games. I know someone who was supposed to go to the Olympics for water polo, but couldn't because of the 1980 boycott. He never got to go after that :(
