Bush to lift ban on offshore drilling: Do you think this is a good idea?
Today, George Bush decided to lift the executive ban on offshore drilling. He stated that new technologies would make the process safer, and that doing something about the rising energy costs was crucial.

Opponents to his decision feel that energy companies have more than enough places to look for oil, but have stalled in investing in these places due to the record profits they are reaping.

What do you guys think? Is lifting the ban a good idea?

Answered Yes!! Something needs to be done about gas prices!!

Sadly it won't do a thing about gas prices, but I've never understood why there was a ban in the first place. Why have we spent, what - two decades? - sending billions to make other countries rich? I'm failing to see the logic.

Hey, I'm not about to pay $8 for gas when I'm able to drive a car. The oil won't be able to be used for years. We need a short term solution for the pain at the pump.

Not to menton that just because we start off-shore drilling doesn't mean gas prices will go down anytime soon. You know there was time when people weren't too bothered about air pollution, back in the day when in L.A. we had 3rd degree smog alert days. The air was thick and brown, it hurt to breathe and your eyes would burn. Many people thought that those darn liberals were infringing on everyones rights and freedoms wanting to stop mass air pollution and all... And GEE, those darn liberals were right!! The smog was creating health issues and was NOT good for us. We all have to live here and personally I'd like to do so without causing irrepairable damage to the planet, future generations, and the others around me.
The eco-system in the ocean is delicate and off-shore drilling creates a huge threat to it, instead of disregarding other life just because we don't want to make any changes in our lives doesn't make us the better species, it makes us stupid.

yep... its incredibly important. if something isnt done about how we are treating this planet in the next couple years, we're going to be in a very bad place imo

I agree, it's too bad there are so many people that don't want to see it, for some reason people think other people are just making it up. Why?, I have no idea... people reason people people

H, I would say war has hurt the oceans more than anything else. A german u-boat carried 80 TONS of batteries in its keel. THOUSANDS were sunk. Is all that battery acid good for the oceans? Does the salt water neutralize the acid? And the diesel fuel and the oil. I doubt it. How about the ships they sunk? Thousands. And the explosions of war...does sealife know to get away when a depth charge splashes in? And then there's testing of atomic bombs. I agree man is trashy and has been very ignorant if not just stupid concerning the oceans. Because its blue doesn't mean it's healthy. I'm not gonna say we need our own oil, that's a no brainer. But more than any time in our past and partly because of the volume of the activists, man has learned he can and must do this right. He can get the oil, build the plants, and be a green neighbor.
  • raves     [-] by H
Exactly, and thank you. But you do realize, if we started off-shore drilling today, we wouldn't see the effects for at least a decade. Better to start using alternative sources now than relying on what we hope will help in 10 years time.
I don't care for war either and certainly don't support the ones we are currently in (although there may be a certain amount of rational for Afganistan). I have never agreed with the idea of testing bombs in the ocean, but in the interest of commerce and travel I can't object to ships on the ocean, ut more needs to be done in the event that they have an accident. Reaction time needs to be faster and more efficient and bigger fines need to be appropiated when neccesary.
We and everyone else in the world need to start taking better care of our planet if we expect it to continue to sustain us...

We need to wean off oil, yes, research alternatives, but the transition will be a couple or three generations! We may have to keep Americans in therapy that long or longer to help them deal with breaking the great love affair they have with the car.

The impact of lifting the ban won't really be felt for several years. Energy independence will happen only when we tap our own resources as well as explore alternatives. We should have been doing both a long time ago.

The environmental activists convinced government and industry that there would be oil leakage washing up on shores from the pumping, now we know from places like the Irish coast and gulf coast thats not true and we have tranferred a lot of our wealth (and power) to other countries.
  • raves +2   [-] by RJ
Hey Lefty, If you don't think the oil washes up on shore you are misinformed. I have seen it. It looks like tar. If you don't believe me go to Santa Barbara, CA. It is the same there. If you go swimming the tar from the oil gets all over your swim suit and will not wash out. You can also see it all over the beach. Besides, lifting the ban on off shore drilling will not decrease gas prices. The oil will go into the world market where it will be sold at market value. Oil from America isn't any cheaper than oil from anywhere else. This whole thing is a political ploy to swing peoples votes to the right. I'm sure it will work too. Unfortunately there are a lot of stupid people out there that believe all that crap. If you are anti environment go live in China where they have no laws to protect the environment, and see how you like living in that toxic cesspool of a country.
  • raves     [-] by NoLefty ~ McCain/Palin
It's not a ploy, but I agree it will get support because we need it. Our lifestyle, our economy, agriculture, military - everything depends on oil. Drilling is not a quick fix but I don't hear anybody saying it will be. Continue to research and find alternatives, but what would you, Mr. Liberal Activist that hates drilling, (not necessarily you RJ) have us do right now? Right now! Legislate that an already stressed nation ride bicycles? Commute on public trans that is in no way prepared for this many people? You wanna see road rage, try that. We're hard wired to drive cars, I live 23 miles from work. That won't change very soon. The activists (the hippies were great at this) scream for change NOW but have no idea how to transition it. They're just frustrated with what is. Typical.

In addition an iron clad law should be in place that would stop any oil being shipped overseas, it must be refined here and sold here! Otherwise nationalize the oil and mineral reserves of the entire nation.

Not a good idea. The economic stimuus plan should have been invested in alternative energy etc. I personally worked 14 years on a wind project that would generate enough power for 50,000 homes. It was turned down because the windmills could be seen from a nature trail about 3 miles away. I think the plan should have also included a stimulus rebate check for anyone who purchased a new vehicle with a $50.00 rebate amount for every rated increase in mileage over 25. All we are doing by drilling in new locations is delaying the inevitable shortages we face and do nothing about. Since 1970 we switched to SUV's and nearly doubled the square footage of single family homes. This seems arrogant.

The ban on ALL types of drilling in ALL places should have been lifted years ago and we would not be having these problems. We can drill and still look for viable alternatives, but those alternatives are probably at least 20 years away. The Dems constant stopping of the drilling is nothing more than trying to force all of us to follow their green policies.............

What is going on here!! We cannot stop using oil over night! Beginning the move towards drilling now, the price at the pump will stablize but will never be at two dollar levels. We need to start NOW to drill for the oil that we can and at the same time, continue the reaserch for alternatives. This is clearly political rangling but it is a no brainer for anyone that thinks. Not drilling, not doing the reaserch for alternatives would both be folly!! Our children deserve better.. Our nation deserves better!!!

Clean up the abandoned rigs at sea, take away the tax breaks which have only lined their pockets. We don't need OPEC or the middle-eastern oil. An exploitive idea. NO!

This was his plan all along . Spike the gas prices to an all time high until we can't take it anymore . Then we will have to agree to more off shore drilling . The man is all for one and one for himself . I understand the importance of oil and the many purposes it serves . But we have to wake up and start manufacturing alternate energy and stop talking about it . Just Do It !!!

All of the above I guess. We need to drill for our own oil, no worse than strip mining for coal and the polar bears are dying, any way, because thereis nothing in that wasteland for them to eat. We also need to build that new refinery, and tap into all other sources of energy, to back up the oil and not rely solely on oil. At some point we will run out of oil in the middle east.

This will do NOTHING to lower gas prices ~ no impact until year 2030

    Answer this:
Why has the Bush administation given HUGE tax breaks to oil companies in the last 7 1/2 years with the thought of them using the profits to explore and put more technology to work?
Why did Bush wait 7 1/2 years to even make the above proposal?
Will this make a 'psychological" impact on Americans (John McCains thoughts)?
Can't say it's a good or bad idea because it won't affect me since I do not live near the coastal waters ~ just think it's a farse and feel for the people that fought it for so long . Check out the link. http://www.huffingtonpo...

Your source is the uber liberal huffington post? Better start doing some research. The Republicans have been trying to do this for over 30 years now and the Democrats, environmentalist, radical special interest groups and now the Global Warming groups have all been standing in the way. Do The Research, don't just mimic the political agenda of the hufffington post.
