I do not really believe in the death penalty, because too many have been executed, only to find out later they were innocent. Some people (that are murderers, rapists) can never be rehabilitated. I do not want them on the streets, but dIfferent scenarios lead to different solutions. We will always be debating this, along with guns, abortion, and every other moral issue. People feel to stongly one way, or the other and it is counter productive to try to change their minds, argue morality and justice, or threaten to block. That defeats the purpose of what SH is all about-difference of opinion. -
I agree. People feel very strongly one way or another. Debating about it is a healthy process to keep us involved in how other people feel without taking it to extremes. However, it is counter productive to fight about it. Most people were influenced early in life to feel one way or another about each of these controversial issues. Great comment Chuck!

I think it really depends on the crime . If you are one hundred percent guilty . Kill the bastards . If there is reasonable doubt however no. Besides they cost too much to house . If you don't want to take a chance on doing the time then I would suggest don't commit the crime ... -

The death penalty should be used sparingly, but I believe society should always have the option available if, in the opinion of a jury of peers someone has committed a crime so heinous as to have abdicated their right to live. In the most extreme case, would someone actually argue that if Hitler had been captured alive he should have been allowed to live out his life in some prison somewhere, with us paying for it??
Another consideration that seems to always be overlooked is that putting someone in prison for the rest of their lives is potentially a worse penalty than death. Apart from the fact that society should not have to pay for this, keeping that person alive serves no conceivable purpose other than to assuage the guilt of those who oppose the death penalty like yourself. I don't mean any disrespect to you, but if the person in prison had killed your infant child your opinion might be different than in an abstract discussion. -
Answered Sometime in the Future, because...
because political correctness is fast ruining this country. Careful what you wish for, a society where there is no real consequence for heinous crimes will not be "civilized" it will only be more dangerous. There needs to remain a system where there is a severe punishment for severe crimes. Already we have prison systems where prisoners can get college degrees at taxpayer expense. Our own children don't get that kind of deal, but yet we will give it to a criminal. The rehabilitation of a criminal should be to teach them how to get a job and work for a legitimate income- and then they can use their own money or get student loans for a higher education. I do think however that they should all be made to obtain a ged if they aren't hs grads. -

I hate to be cruel and sound heartless, but some people deserve no less then the death penalty. The man that raped and killed a little 9 year old girl, felt no mercy for her as he strangled her, so he should be shown the same ruthlessness. -

are you saying someone who commits a heinous crime and is proven guilty beyond any doubt deserves to live out their life in relative comfort while the family of a loved one must live everyday with the knowledge that some scum took their loved ones life and probably in a horrifying manner!!!!!! no uh uh!! no way!!! they should have the same thing done to them as they did to the murdered!!!!!it is the only deterrant, and it doesn't deter enough with all the appeals they get!!! guilty is guilty no appeals!!!!!!!! none!!!!!!!!! -

Americans spend too much time watching TV. Too many people enjoy programs such as Jerry Springer, Cops, and news programs that televise photos and film footage of violence. To top it off, we have a president who LOVES and is PROUD of his promotion of war. As long as we become increasingly desensitized by atrocities such as I have mentioned, we are no more spiritually evolved as the ancient civilizations whose entertainment was watching people being devoured by lions in colosseums!!! -

Thwere are crimes committed that deserve the death penalty. And as much as I like and respect you Henrik, this is an issue for Americans and their conscience. You hurt my child with violence or rape or several other offenses you die in my opinion. You kill a loved you you should forfeit your life. I carry a gun because if you assualt me or a loved one I am with you will not have to worry about the death penalty or even a trial. This goes for a starnger in danger as.I see nothing civilized in cage a vicious animal at the expense of society for life. To me that is crueler.
