When will USA join the rest of the civilized world and abolish the death penalty?

These are the countries that carried out the most executions in 2007. That's some fine company you're in.

Country Number

China 470+ (other sources est. 6,000+)*
Iran 317+
Saudi Arabia 143+
Pakistan 135+
USA 42
Iraq 33+

* Based on publicly available reports. Other sources suggest the real tally in China for example may be as high as 6,000.

Thwere are crimes committed that deserve the death penalty. And as much as I like and respect you Henrik, this is an issue for Americans and their conscience. You hurt my child with violence or rape or several other offenses you die in my opinion. You kill a loved you you should forfeit your life. I carry a gun because if you assualt me or a loved one I am with you will not have to worry about the death penalty or even a trial. This goes for a starnger in danger as.

I see nothing civilized in cage a vicious animal at the expense of society for life. To me that is crueler.

We should do away with the Death Penalty as soon as we do away with sleazy, snake-oil, Lawyers that get criminals out of prisons on technicalities.

We'll probably abolish the death penalty when "people stop killing people"...until then, think of it as 'survival of the fittest"

I have seen some mention that we are not civilized if we execute criminals who commit heinous crimes. If is the criminals who are not civilized. In order to remain a civilized society we must be rid of these monsters.

if theyre in jail for life, we are rid of them. Whats the benefit to promoting ideals of revenge? All it does is propagate more violence and hatred. People need to learn to love

get real!!!!! life in prison????? what about the murdered??????
  • raves +1   [-] by Andrew
Nothing is going to compensate a family or certainly a person for being murdered. Maybe a family might want to see their loved ones' murderer killed, but thats just feeding to more violence. Our government should not sponsor killings.
  • raves     [-] by irishnurse~mccain palin/nobama
    then who should kill them???

On one hand I am against the death penalty, the other says why house these crooks forever. I think we need to fix the prison system toward rehabilitation that works to make more productive citizens.
  • raves +1   [-] by Andrew
For one, its cheaper to house them forever. Secondly, we wont have any innocent people executed. Thirdly, having executions solely promotes the lust for revenge in society, which (as i said above) only propagates more violence. The law should be about deterring crime; studies have shown that having the death penalty does not decrease the number of murders. Thus, having the death penalty is purely so that people can feel avenged, or have their revenge on somebody, which is just adding more blood-lust to our already too violent society

    sure it does!!!(sarcasm)
  • raves +1   [-] by Andrew
Tell me the reason you think murderers should be executed?
  • raves     [-] by irishnurse~mccain palin/nobama
why should they live when they took someones life?the murdered had no say in it. violent criminals reliquish their right to life for themselves when they kill.

I think the Death Penality should never be abolished, because I believe that if you kill someone or rape someone, you should die.
No matter what, you took someone's life away and in the rape case, pride, so you should sit in a cell until prison guards come in and inject lethal poison into your veins.
    Fair, right?
I personally favor the electric chair :/

I just chose this because I used to have this patch!!! Actually I'm kinda of at that stage where I am undecided. One part of me says, "Thou shalt not kill", but another part says that some crimes are just to hideous to let the person live. Let's just find an abandoned island and let them fend for themselves!!! Cheaper on us taxpayers!
  • raves +1   [-] by Jackie
We did that once, we called it Australia lol ^_^
  • raves +1   [-] by Henrik the Harp
Which is nowadays a reasonably civilized nation with no death penalty, if I'm correctly informed.
Thus a succesful project, dare I suggest...?
  • raves +1   [-] by Jackie
Yes yes a very good idea! But I dont think we have any spare islands.. If we do, I would gladly support the idea. But then again whats the difference with leaving someone on an island with a bunch of other murders, most of whom will not survive, or just saving time and killing them? Either way we are sending people to there death. But if we have an island, we should try it, see how it turns out.

In a free society, there need to be consequences. If we want to maintain a free society, there needs to be the ultimate punishment.
  • raves +1   [-] by Andrew
life in jail without parole is certainly a consequence, and a punishment, and it doesn't feed to the blood-lust of americans.
  • raves +1   [-] by irishnurse~mccain palin/nobama
no its not!! kill and live till you die of old age!! wow what a horrible consequence!! and the victims never had that chance!
  • raves +1   [-] by Andrew
"and the victims never had that chance!"

So we should stoop to the level of the murderers?

I don't want to sound like I'm blowing smoke up my own ass here, but think about this: who's viewpoint (yours or mine) promotes less violence in society?

I believe that murder should be left solely to the murderers; you feel that murderers should be killed. Its pretty clear that your beliefs include more violence than mine. So the question you need to ask yourself is... does violence propagate more violence? I believe it absolutely does. If you have a society of people who think that murder is never ok (society A), contrasted with a society where the people think that murder is sometimes ok (society B), society A will undoubtedly have less murder over time. Therefore, not having the death penalty will in the long run lead to less violence (given that over time, it will convince normal people such as you to think that murder is never ok, no matter what the circumstances)
  • raves     [-] by Henrik the Harp
    Exactly!
  • raves     [-] by irishnurse~mccain palin/nobama
no thats wrong. the death penalty came about as a deterrent to horrific violence. given the nature of humans you will never have a violence free state.psychopaths and sociopaths seem to be regular people until they kill.what would be the point of keeping something like that alive at taxpayer expense for who knows how long.when you kill you lose your right to live.

Even after studying this issue intensely for years, I haven't come to a position on this subject that I'm completely comfortable with.
  • raves +3   [-] by Bill - NObama - McFriend ®
and you probably never will, each of us harbor a sanctity for life, but each of us also know that there must be punishment for crimes...

I personally believe that the punishment should fit the crime...

i feel for you and understand your position 100%

The USA (federal) doesn't have a death penalty, THEY leave it up to the states. Where I live there is no death penalty. Bottom line, it costs more to house a prisoner on death row (40K per yr?) than give them life in prison. Problem is our 'other' laws that allow multiple appeals, greedy attorneys, and simply not being strict enough. If you want no death penalty, move to another state, simple, and you can vote on it.
  • raves +3   [-] by bill
The answer is to expedite the death penalty. I never understood why a person sentenced to the death penalty did not get his last meal and then off to the sentence. All other sentences are immediate, so the death penalty should be as well.
