When will USA join the rest of the civilized world and abolish the death penalty?
These are the countries that carried out the most executions in 2007. That's some fine company you're in.

Country Number

China 470+ (other sources est. 6,000+)*
Iran 317+
Saudi Arabia 143+
Pakistan 135+
USA 42
Iraq 33+

* Based on publicly available reports. Other sources suggest the real tally in China for example may be as high as 6,000.

Thwere are crimes committed that deserve the death penalty. And as much as I like and respect you Henrik, this is an issue for Americans and their conscience. You hurt my child with violence or rape or several other offenses you die in my opinion. You kill a loved you you should forfeit your life. I carry a gun because if you assualt me or a loved one I am with you will not have to worry about the death penalty or even a trial. This goes for a starnger in danger as.

I see nothing civilized in cage a vicious animal at the expense of society for life. To me that is crueler.

well i don't know where you learned about the scripture, so i can't address the validity of that statement other than to say i have NEVER been told that anything in the Bible was ever "voided" other than the need to sacrifice to atone for one's sins, Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice and through him, no more were needed.. that's it though, and that's not even "voided" that's simply "replaced"
  • raves     [-] by Henrik the Harp
As is the old law replaced by the teachings of Jesus that requires us to love our enemies and forgive each others sins, as ours were forgiven.
  • raves +2   [-] by Andrew
Jesus forgave the people who were killing him... he preached turning the other cheek, and being all loving. Theres absolutely no way the death penalty fits in with Jesus' teachings.

i can just as well forgive someone a transgress against me, but i still expect them to be punished for it... the same as i would expect to be punished for transgressing against someone...
forgiveness and punishment are 2 different things.. (not mutually exclusive or inclusive of each other either)

i love my son too, but i will spank him when he needs it... doesn't mean i love him any less, i'll even forgive him for whatever he did that got him spanked, but i'm still a believer of "spare the rod spoil the child"

Granted, i'm no biblical scholar, and understandably you can turn the other cheek all day long, well unless you're dead, but nowhere in there does Jesus say to simply let people walk all over you, nor does the bible teach that you should ignore the laws of the king.
Jesus's teachings are to be compliant with the laws of Man, while balancing them against the laws of God. God doesn't want us to have conflict and strife in our lives, but he does want us to be able to make a conscious choice regarding recognizing, following and integrating his word into our daily lives.
But make no mistake.. God doesn't want a bunch of sheeple.... he gave us a brain and expects us to use it.
  • raves +2   [-] by Andrew
I'd argue that turning your other cheek and punishment are mutually exclusive. If you are truly forgiving (such as Jesus), then punishment is not a necessity and certainly not something you'd work to enact on others.

Obviously, we have laws in order to protect the people. Murder cannot go unpunished, for it threatens the well-being of the more moral citizens. Life in prison is a punishment that deters murder as effectively as the death penalty. Having the death penalty is therefore an unnecessary extreme; its us stooping to the levels of the murderer.
  • raves +2   [-] by Bill - NObama
well i agree and disagree with your response... some of your points are quite valid, while others place the burden of caring for the offender in order to punish him/her...
for example, you state that the two are mutually exclusive... unless your definition of "turning the other cheek" is solely based on you "forgiving the transgress", the two are more "inclusive of each other" than not, as shown below.
by turning the other cheek, you negate the need, or call for punishment, yet when punished for the transgression, the need for, or call to turn the other cheek is negated.

to look at the imprisonment for life, you then have an individual who is now being fed, clothed, treated with any medical needs, given a gym, cable, phone, electric, ect ect all out of your pocket...
While to the majority of folks this is a horrible idea, some people thrive in an institutionalized environment, and are basically being rewarded for not following the rules...

    just a thought...
  • raves +1   [-] by Andrew
whether or not prison life is hard vs. easy, or fair vs. unfair is besides the point imo. I think that the death penalty is a bad way to deal with murderers because I don't think it helps the problem (I think it makes it worse). Whether inmates should get the amenities that you described, I'm not sure... what they get as a privilege and what is afforded to them as a right might need to be reconsidered, however, regardless, I feel the death penalty is wrong.

This is Jesus speaking, according to the Gospel.

    Matthew 5: 38-42:

"You have heard it said, 'eye for eye and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you"

SOME of the old ways that the jews followed were changed when jesus came onto the seen. i was more a live by the spirit philosophy than a strict, black and white, you can do this but not this, philosophy. and it was all inclusive, open to all races and peoples.

First, why do you think the total for Iraq for 2007 is so low...........thank you AMERICA. Prior to that thousands were murdered every year. One can make numbers and statistics look anyway they want. That being said, the death penalty does have its place in society. Until everyone realizes that there are just some folks that are bad and can never be rehabilitated feelings about this will never change. The penalty should fit the crime and sometimes it will be death. The figure of 42 does not disturb me at all. We have a population of over 300Million, so that equates to roughly 1 in every 9 million people. Sounds like we are being really careful about who gets put to death.
  • raves +1   [-] by oldmancccain
Please explain your first sentence. About Iraq? How did you get that out of the question and don't understand the 'so low'.
  • raves     [-] by Studied
Your statics show Iraq with only 33, which makes a point of it being lower than America. Prior to America going to Iraq their total was in the thousands. Simple since Sadam was slaughtering his people prior to 2007. Where is the confusion in my statement?
  • raves     [-] by oldmancccain
Thanks for answering, confused because the question was regarding the death penalty.

until you or a loved one is vic of crime, you'll never understand. Death penalty has been with us as long as people have been on earth. Can you truthfully say that serial killers don't deserve death! If you can, then tell that to the people that were slain parents.

My mother was very close to being beaten to death once so I know first hand. It would just have made it worse had they killed the one who did it. How can anything be better by more killing.

I believe in the commandment, "Thou shalt not kill"
  • raves +1   [-] by texgem
Am sorry about your mother, but you're telling me that serial killers, rapists and such should be allowed to live.
Please don't quote Bible unless you quote whole verse. The commandments are rules to live by, but crimals do NOT follow any rules.
  • raves +2   [-] by Henrik the Harp
The rules apply to everyone. NO one has the right to take another ones life. That is what I believe and that's what the bible says no matter how you try to twist it.
  • raves +1   [-] by texgem
As you've stated "that is what I belive" and sir, I do not twist Bible. Was Lutheran Pastor's sec. for 14 yrs, SST for 15 (high school), so I learned alot about Bible and respect anyone's knowledge of it, but you must agree that death happened in the Bible due to one taking of anothers life.
  • raves +2   [-] by Henrik the Harp
In the old testament yes, the old way with the law, that didn't work so Jesus came and saved us. "Love thy enemy" is what Jesus teaches. Forgive over and over, as you where forgiven. There's no death penalty in his teachings, he himself was the last one that needed to be executed. For us.
  • raves +1   [-] by oldmancccain
OMG!!!!!!!!! YOUR FLAG, SUPPORT THE TROOPS!!!!!!!!!!

YET YOU LIVE BY THE BIBLE???????????

I am not that religious, however, how can you, how, how, how, can you mix state and religion with 'THOU SHALT NOT KILL'? and claim you do not twist the bible yet support the war..

Until you explain, I must say you are a HYPOCRITE!!!!!!!!
  • raves +1   [-] by jmsloderb
Read this website: http://www.gotquestions.org/w... Did you not read the part of the Bible where God ordered the Israelities to go to war and where he ordered public executions? When God says, "Thou shalt not murder," he means murders, with the exception of war. God said that any Christian should not wish for war, but it will be inevitable. "texgem" isn't a hypocrite.
  • raves +1   [-] by Andrew
As a lutheran pastor's sec. you must understand the beauty of the teachings of Jesus... the fact that he loved all, no matter what they did, and forgave all no matter what they did. Obviously there should be a punishment for violent criminals, and a way to keep them from being a danger to society. Life without parole is such a punishment; theres no way that you can combine Jesus' teachings with a support of the death penalty though. They absolutely do not coincide with one another
  • raves +2   [-] by Bill - NObama
does it not also reference retribution?
the ten commandments are not the sum total of what the Bible teaches...

not to beat you up of course, just pointing out something you seem to be overlooking

This is one issue where I am really torn. As a Liberal, I'm supposed to be opposed to the death penalty. But when I read about some sick little prick who walks into a convenience store and murders a single mother of 2 for $50 bucks, or sick perv who rapes and murders a 9 year old child.....eliminating that scum from society for good, seems the only reasonable thing to do. I really dont want to pay for his 3 meals a day.
