    They never do.

Yes. We stopped the conflict, but went down in history as the bringers of a newfound horror...especially after we saw the aftermath of radiation (sickness, cancer, birth defects, the fact that people were still dying not too long ago from it). It also brought about the beginning of the cold war, and led us to where we are now.
There is a huge price to pay for using those kinds of weapons...a price we still can't calculate.

Nuking Japan had nothing to do with the Cold War.
  • raves +1   [-] by Don
Yes, it did. It helped to start it.
Think about it. We developed a bomb, used it, and scared the world to death. We, at that moment, were the strongest force to have ever walked the earth...EVER. Capable of mass destruction on a scale that had never been seen before.
Russia, having come out quite well after V-E Day, and all ready had building tension with us, saw their power diminish overnight. As a result, they rushed out, completed their research, and built bombs of their own to "protect" their livelihood. We felt threatened (especially because we knew about how strong they were), and built more...So they built more...and so on, and so on. Obviusly that's a condensed version, but still accurate.

The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki have a lot to do with the Cold War.

In part, but the Cold War was about much more. And it was NOT against Japan who got nuked. That was my point.
  • raves +2   [-] by Don
I know it wasn't against Japan, but it did help set the motion for everything that has happened since.

You've got to admit that the bombing was a huge blemish on mankind's history.
  • raves     [-] by mk, Supreme Smartass
A blemish? Well then there are about a trillion others too.
  • raves +1   [-] by Don
Blemish is a pretty mild word, but I felt is was classier than stinking crap stain.

You get my meaning though. In the "top 5" mistakes of mankind, it's right up there.
  • raves     [-] by mk, Supreme Smartass
    Nuking Japan was a mistake?
  • raves +1   [-] by Don
Yes. I all ready stated that, and explained it above...it might have been a quick fix, but in the long run, it caused more problems than it solved.
  • raves     [-] by mk, Supreme Smartass
Then what would you have done if you were Harry Truman?
  • raves     [-] by Don
I'll be honest in saying I don't know.
But what I do know is what I've had to read about, and live through: which is the aftermath of those actions.
  • raves     [-] by mk, Supreme Smartass
Aftermath? In the immediate aftermath, it shortened WW2 by several years. It saved millions of lives on both sides.
  • raves     [-] by Don
I disagree about shortening it by several years. The war was all but won all ready, with our victories in the Philippines, and our successful near-destruction of their economy.
But what about the long term? You cannot say that those bombs did not set into motion everything that we've had to deal with.
  • raves     [-] by mk, Supreme Smartass
Well the thinking at the time was that is saved lives. And all you're doing is Monday morning quarterbacking.

Don,, the Russians stole the technology for the A-Bomb from us. Does the name Rosenburg ring a bell.
  • raves     [-] by mk, Supreme Smartass
    Ah the Rosenbergs.

    ah rosenbergs
  • raves     [-] by Don
The Rosenburgs, though spies, were not the only factor in the Soviet Union's aquisition of the bomb (and their involvement with the Manhattan Project is still unclear).
Nazi Germany was working on developing the A-Bomb, and the Soviets were too. We just got there first. Yes, the Soviets used stolen information to speed up their technology, but not to totally create it.
  • raves     [-] by mk, Supreme Smartass
The Rosenbergs were convicted in federal court and executed for treason. I agree they were not the only factor in the USSR getting the A bomb.

rosenbergs convicted federal court executed treason factor ussr bomb

Don,,, screw with USA and that's what you get.
  • raves +1   [-] by Don
That is not a very convincing argument. Especially now. In fact it's very arrogant and will lead to trouble. There are nations now that can easily wipe us off the face of the Earth (China is the perfect example. Yes, I know that we can do the same to them..but that's where the Nuclear argument becomes a stalemate. NOBODY will ever win a fight that involves those weapons), and there are nations that have proven that they can put up a very good fight even against out "might." Vietnam and Iraq are prime examples.

I'm not saying that we are a weak nation; I'm just saying that we've been shown that that kind of attitude only brings trouble.
  • raves     [-] by mk, Supreme Smartass
    True, and you forgot Afghanistan.
  • raves +1   [-] by Don
Indeed I did. You're absolutely right, too.
  • raves     [-] by wiszard
Don, it got us a victory over the Japenese.
  • raves     [-] by Don
A faster victory. There is no telling what would have happened over time. I will still maintain the same stance that I have:

When it comes to atomic warfare; the ends did not, do not, and will never justify the means.
