Yes. We stopped the conflict, but went down in history as the bringers of a newfound horror...especially after we saw the aftermath of radiation (sickness, cancer, birth defects, the fact that people were still dying not too long ago from it). It also brought about the beginning of the cold war, and led us to where we are now.
There is a huge price to pay for using those kinds of weapons...a price we still can't calculate. -
Yes, it did. It helped to start it.
Think about it. We developed a bomb, used it, and scared the world to death. We, at that moment, were the strongest force to have ever walked the earth...EVER. Capable of mass destruction on a scale that had never been seen before.
Russia, having come out quite well after V-E Day, and all ready had building tension with us, saw their power diminish overnight. As a result, they rushed out, completed their research, and built bombs of their own to "protect" their livelihood. We felt threatened (especially because we knew about how strong they were), and built more...So they built more...and so on, and so on. Obviusly that's a condensed version, but still accurate.
The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki have a lot to do with the Cold War. -
I disagree about shortening it by several years. The war was all but won all ready, with our victories in the Philippines, and our successful near-destruction of their economy.
But what about the long term? You cannot say that those bombs did not set into motion everything that we've had to deal with. -
The Rosenburgs, though spies, were not the only factor in the Soviet Union's aquisition of the bomb (and their involvement with the Manhattan Project is still unclear).
Nazi Germany was working on developing the A-Bomb, and the Soviets were too. We just got there first. Yes, the Soviets used stolen information to speed up their technology, but not to totally create it. -
That is not a very convincing argument. Especially now. In fact it's very arrogant and will lead to trouble. There are nations now that can easily wipe us off the face of the Earth (China is the perfect example. Yes, I know that we can do the same to them..but that's where the Nuclear argument becomes a stalemate. NOBODY will ever win a fight that involves those weapons), and there are nations that have proven that they can put up a very good fight even against out "might." Vietnam and Iraq are prime examples.
I'm not saying that we are a weak nation; I'm just saying that we've been shown that that kind of attitude only brings trouble. -
