I think they will form new mergers and dismantle the small ones.AMR,Continental,ect will survive.They will become more like British with only a very few carriers. The price to fly will continue to go up even if fuel prices come down.Its a tough business in a good economy.Fewer places to fly will be a result.Airlines will have to adapt to a whole new way of business. -

Betting on which airlines will survive is like betting that everyone you know will live forever- You're very likely going to be wrong because ALL airline companies die miserable deaths eventually.
The first golden rule I learned when I started investing-- NEVER buy airline stock. -
raves Jul 17, 2008 01:57AM GMTYes I learned the hard way.. I thought I was being clever buying Continental Airline stock at what I thought was a bargain. I lost most of my money that way.
Think of all the airlines that have been in existence that you no longer see. Every 5 - 10 years they switch because airline companies are not profitable-- Fuel costs are too high per person and the profit margins are too slim.
