Do you haggle a lot?

I read this article in Esquire about a man who spent 3 months trying to haggle anything and everything. A hot dog, expensive shirts, gas...he wanted to negotiate all prices.
"What if I opened every transaction to a haggle? What if I made my own bid on a TiVo? A counteroffer on dry cleaning? What if I treated the list price for a dress shirt as merely a suggestion? Could I insert myself into every transaction so that price wasn't so much of an absolute? I wanted to know. For three months, I would haggle everything that came my way, insisting to everyone who would listen that price was a fluid force, a matter of argument."

Read the article, its hilarious.

What about you SodaHeads? Were you taught how to haggle? Do you try and haggle on everything? Are you bad at haggling and just take a price put in front of you?

Answered Its too much of a hassle. I would rather take the straight price and pay it.

I feel like I can go to a competitor if the price is too high. I think it is sort of embarrassing. When I worked in retail I was sort of amazed that someone thought they could walk in to a store and get a better price than someone else. I kind of liked telling them no, this isn't a market or ebay, it is a retail store. I don't make much money, but I would see rich people do it. Embarassing!!

In those rare occasions, yes, but most of the time I just pay the asking price if it's reasonable. If it's too expensive, I just pass.

My mom haggles the most. She gets free things everywhere -- even chain fast food restaurants and department stores. I enjoy the art and challenge of a good deal, but often I value my time too much to spend beating up the price.

I have never been a haggler. If it is to expensive I just don't buy it.

Before I retired, I was in sales and everyone tried to haggle the best price they could. There were times I would go lower, however there were times when that was not a possibility. Now I will haggle on the price of a car or a house. If I thing the person will negotiate on anything I want to buy, I will give it a shot.

I got a great deal on my tv, because it was the end of the month and a floor sample. That's the best time to get prices, especially at chain stores. I love my tv and had offered less than half of the reduce price posted. They basically took it, never hurts and I love my tv.
Where I really enjoy it is at thrift stores, fleamarkets, and garage sales. That's where I really excel. The rest....well I've been on both sides of haggling at retail stores and well...I just don't like it. Why would I stress myself haggling, begging, bullying for ten percent off, which is the norm. Kinda silly.

I wouldn't say just "best offer," stuff. There are some things that you just know you can haggle it. For example a department store, no, but making reservations to rent out a hall, yes.
