Actually this film is a few years old. It has some exceptional footage. I have a copy on tape. My mother saw it, recorded it and sent me a copy. Its a great film.
Another film that really gets it is Stacy Peralta's 'Riding Giants'. It exposes the real culture and reasons for surfing. I grew up surfing a lot and still do occasionally. It's one of those things that gets in your blood and never gets out. -
Ya the Brown Brothers did it in 2003 Great job and breathtakingly beautiful.
Did you ever see Iconoclasts on the IFC channel?
They match 2 celebs up and do a story of them together.
They did Laird Hamilton and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam's front man) They are good friends, It was done at Lairds home and was very interesting. They are both earth people. Check as they repeat the series you will like it.
I have "riding Giants" LOL Love that one too.I agree Tom its a life style or rather a counterculture. A spiritual one-just you with nature. Now there is a religion for you ,the right wingers will really go after me-as/if.
Tom I just checked your profile and you are a dave Matthews fan!!! You are the only one on SH that I know of. I just saw them Aug. 1st. They were GREAT. On that day Dave had been to Virginia tech where he donated his performance for the school. At 8pm he was on stage at Tweeter in Mansfield MA and still did a full and wonderful performance. I love people who give back. Carter Beauford is a well seasoned drummer and I have respect for him as well not to mention I love his style. He has "Bad Boy" attutude but a gentle spirit! Okay My favorite tunes that DMB do, Graverdigger, Bartender, Don't Drink the Water. Everyday, Ants Marching, Grace is Gone....on and on. And Yours are?? -
Laird is very cool... old soul from the game. I loved ridding giants because it covers the history from Greg Knoll on. I made my kids watch it to understand what passion does to a person. I thought it was a good lesson.
I collect live performances from DMB and the Dead. It has been said I have a hard time diversifying, but actually I like tons of different music. Dave filled the void Jerry left. Did you see any of the Dave and Friends shows? Damn they smoked. Trey was the perfect compliment to Dave.
I was really happy Dave was doing the Va Tech shows. It was a nice touch for the 'start of a new year' at Tech. I like Dave's 'old stuff' mostly. Warehouse, Jimi Thing, Best of What's Around, Pay for What You Get, Seek Up, Minarets although I will admit I saw a Dave show with a vicious 'Don't Drink the Water' opener. -
THANK YOU for the video very cool! I forgot about Dogtown and Z Boyz. I and my 14 yr old grandson(avid skateboarder) watch these its our thing. skateboard or surfboard we love it. When I watch the iconoclast series with Eddie Vedder and Laird it amazes me how big he is and he seems awkward out of the water. He is all arms and legs like a young teenager.
Its a good thing to promote your kids interest in the good stuff. I did the same with my daughters and now grandkids. You are creating good memories for them.
My daughters laugh about it and tease me now-- 'remember when you would not let us.whatever...unless we watched or read whatever." Every year around April they had to watch something on the Holocaust. I forced them to read Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee, and Mila 18, and Diary of Anne Frank. They all got copies of Howard Zenn's People's History of the United States. I am doing the same with their kids. We are neither Jewish or Native American, I just want them to be aware. Now I have added other stuff along the way. The good side of life with the not so good and the out and out tragic. The whole series of 'The Drug Years' and Planet Earth. I think it balances out.
I have seen only 3 of DMB concerts live. I have concerts on dvd's and would love to see him perform at the Gorge--can't pull that off though.
I am a dead-head survivor and went to countless Boston area performances. It is not an urban legend that they threw lsd from the stage -blotter acid. they did. ...THANK YOU for the video very cool! I was so afraid when my 2 older daughters wanted to go to concerts so I would offer to drive. They thought I was being cool-Ya right!
Neil Young is another of my favorites.
Back to Dave. vs Jerry I agree with you on that take and will go further- Bob Dylan. When Dave is solo I am reminded of early Bob Dylan.
In my previous life I was a surfer who followed the wave.
Whew--I really took off ranting--LOL(less) -
I spend a days at work listening to 4 Way Street from the early days of CSNY. Wonderful wooden stuff. Dylan is amazing, I have spent many many many hours playing his stuff on the guitar. Every time I pick it up at least one Dylan tune will be played. My wife and I are all about memories for the kids. They sometimes think its too much but hey they are used to it.
I was in my early teens when the guys in Venice started doing their thing. We were hearing reports in San Diego (Pacific Beach) of guys skating in pools and going off. It was all part of the crazy stuff we did when surf was flat so we tried it too. We used to do crazy 3 mile downhill runs on Soledad Mt Road at 35 mph wearing only shorts and skating this crazy place called Pipeline in La Jolla. I put a link from an article that was another guys view of the 70's in San Diego in the trivia section. Its a fun read. -

I love this movie!!!! The waters I'm closest to the one with the guys chasing barges(?), so cool. It was just a beautiful thing to see! Oh man and the Ireland part, awesome. I've been watching this show called Brotherhood and try to imagine them doing it.....off subject. And then when John from Cincinatti came on air, some freaking awesomer surfing and bring the culture in. Allot of the actors on that show come from surfing "dynasies" or are greats in their own right. Watch Step in to Liquid sober or not, it will entertain you. -
Mona I am so happy someone else saw it! Record it, it will be on Monday 8/20 730am check your direct tv programing. I have had it on all day just for the beauty of it. How about the paralized kid Jesse Billauer, was he not the sweetest guy? The Ireland part got me too. I have not seen brotherhood will look for it tho. I am a big fan of John from Cin. Hopefully HBO will bring it back on next season.

I just catch it when it'son, that way it stays a treat to watch it when I find. It was sweet about that kid, makes water a great equalizer. Even more, I'm into astrology an loved how he mentioned his sign, I'm also a water sign and have always loved the water. As far as Brotherhood is concerned it's about two Irish brothers that live in Long Island, one's a politian and the other is a very bad man, criminal type. The only thing the show and movie have in common is the irishness. My mind wanders..... I am so glad to know someone else watches that J.F.C! I thought I was the only one. And I do hope they bring it back too. Have you looked up monad?
-
No Mona have not looked up Monard what is it nyway
I had a JFCin. poll up It still is only a couple of responses but it was funny check it out. our numbers are few. the series did not do well with the critics
What channel is brothhood on? I like all things Irish including Irish punk, the Dropkick Murphys are my fav. in that genre
I am a fire signs my sister is a Pisces so by relation I am kin with the water. I am ALAWYS at the beach its just 3 min. away, love it. My grandmother and father both came from Ireland they lived by the sea there. We are a big family of beach people. -
From the merrian webster dictionary: an elementary individual substance which reflects the order of the world and from which material properties are derived.
How hot is that!?! Sounds like an illness and it's not!
Brotherhood is on Showtime. If you have showtime on demand you can catch the fist season. The second season starts set 30th. Great violence too. Oh and the brother Micheal is the dad of Draco Malfoy. Very handsome.
I'm from a border town to mexico in texas, so go with the assumption/stereotype....mex-am. In high school there was this chick that a week before and after She'd go on and on about being irish, she had a great great grandparent that was from Ireland. It was a turn off. I mean we didn't celebrate what ever major holiday there was in Spain or Italy or bastille day from France, because that's what my family mostly was. I found out a couple of years ago when my great great grandfather came from Spain, his wife was not spanish but...yep you got it Ireland. So I'm kinda giving in a little at a time. It's a trip and totally explains why the only accent I can do is an Irish accent (Southern or spanish accent don't count). I am so glad you did this, I've been dying to tell someone Irish this story. -
I love that thanks Mona. so a little Irish blood in ya thats good. My other side is Polish but the Irish overruled There were sooo many of them. If you never get to Ireland thats ok get to Boston the overflow is here. check out the dropkick murphys they are from South Boston AKA Southie. What kind of music do you listen to?
-
We are so off the subject, but the fun of it, no? I went to Boston few years ago for the world science fiction convention. A friend was living there at the time and made me see the town a bit. I'm so glad she did, because I got to see a bit of where Good Will Hunting drew from. Wonderful town. That movie taught me a bit, when I listened to the commentary and now know what the "Irish curse". Oh have you ever heard of imdb.com? I looked up all the characters from JFC and the chick that plays Kia, is another fire sign. Thought you'd get a kick out of that.

Thanks she interested me also. You know I did not read the credits on step into liquid but I thought she was in the movie for one comment, or someone who looked like her, anyway I will get her name and watch the credits and see. Oh I can just go to imbd.com..Have not heard of that but will be checking it out Thanks Mona --Oh I added a link for you dropkick murphy fun video its just the song I have no idea who the people are but its funny
