Can You Read With Music Playing?

One time I was studying for a final in my dorm room and I had my headphones on, listening to my favorite music. My roommate looked at me quizzically for a moment then said, "How can you read and listen to music?"

"What?" I said, confused. I had no problem with it, I actually prefer it! But she explained to me that it is hard for her to focus on reading when she's listening to music.

I was wondering, does anyone else have the same issue?
