Southerners may be famous for their hospitality, but they could become infamous for their poor health, according to a new list of America's least healthy states. Seven of the top ten unhealthiest states are south of the Mason-Dixon line, and researchers say an unhealthy lifestyle and high-fat diet are putting the health of the millions who call the South home at risk.
Mississippi topped the list of unhealthy states that was released this week by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), followed by West Virginia and Tennessee. The group compiled the list after analyzing the most recent data from the CDC on the rates of three major health-related killers -- heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
According to PCRM, the least healthy states in the US are:
1. Mississippi
2. West Virginia
3. Tennessee
4. Michigan
5. Louisiana
6. Texas
7. Kentucky
8. Illinois
9. Missouri
10. Arkansas

    I live in the beautiful state of Maine and love it here. Lived in
    Fort Worth Texas for 9yrs but moved back home in 1996 :)

    Why is it boring there? I've lived from New York to California and many places in between and it's what you make of it in my experience. I've never lived in Alabama though but I bet it's not that bad. I now live in Arkansas and I absolutely love it...

    well the city where i live is boring, so i drive an hour to another city on weekends to have fun lol..i have lived in NC and there it wasnt boring at all and of course i lived in PR for 15 years and it was borin either =DD

    I was born in New Mexico. But my family is from Louisiana and that's where I was raised. I consider myself one of Louisiana's finest exports (if I do say so myself -and I would have to because nobody else would :-) and I am in perfect health.

    I live in New Mexico, but that doesn't mean I'm safe! I could have personal bad habits that are worse than the state's average. On the other hand, I might be better than average in Mississippi.

    Well, weightwise I'm in good shape..However, I live in FL & we are under a hurricane watch..(.so, flooding probably not so much)...

    Many of them just haven't realised that much of what is popular to eat in their state is bad bad bad for them. 400 calories in ONE glass of sweet tea vs maybe 5 in a glass of regular ol' plain iced tea. (and you have to reaaaaaaaly specific in asking for plain tea when oin these states too or you'll get just what you didn't ask for. sweet tea). Heavy, thick sauces on everything, heavily breaded, fried foods. I was in one of those areas for a visit recently and had one heck of a time getting food that was healthy most places I went.
    C'mon folks, this is your lhealth you're dealing with! Not just your looks. (those are scondary somvared to one's health)
