Earlier, several well-placed GOP sources in Washington and Idaho had said Craig was likely to resign soon.
GOP sources with knowledge of the situation told CNN's Dana Bash that the Republican National Committee was poised to take the extraordinary step of calling on Craig to resign but held off.
The RNC put the move on hold, the sources said, because top party leaders had received indications that Craig himself was preparing to step down.
Craig has been under pressure to quit since news surfaced this week that he was arrested in June at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and later pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge.

He has to leave only because with the position he holds he can be compromised. No one in government can afford to be held in a position of trust and be blackmailed over sexual malfeasants -

I vote this way not because of the activity (he can participate in ANY
behavior he wants on his own time [but right now he's an elected
official] as long as it doesn't break laws or encroach on anyone else's
rights) but because:
1. he CHOSE to put himself in the public view by asking HIS constituency to make him their senator,
2.
he is quite vocally an anti-homosexual FAMILY man who has the
appearance of being the model citizen, including his participation in
the Republican party and his local religeous organization,
3. his does not deny the fact that he is so obviously BISEXUAL and,
4.
he says that anyone who is gay is incapable of loving their partner,
their country, or anything else that most of us consider important for
the good life.
SO THERE! -

Senator Larry Craig should have resigned before Saturday as he knew there would be a fallout to his arrest and pleading guilty of lewd behavior in a bathroom. He has placed his family in a light I am sure they would prefer not to be in. -

He came on to an undercover cop in a public bathroom what was he thinking-a public bathroom? Pretty desperate! I do not care if he is gay or not he should be discrete! Get out as quick as he can and save his family more humiliation -

Senator Craig should have known at the very beginning of the affair that he could not survive. If he had been more realistic and perhaps more honorable he would have resigned sooner and have avoided prolonging the agony for his family any longer than necessary. These guys seem to get so carried away with their own importance and perceived invincability that they cannot recognize the reality that everyone else can see so clearly. -
Answered He should have told people when the event took place, he didn't and now he has to pay the price.
If no one else he should have told his family. He hoped it would all go away, it didn't. He was arrested, he pled guilty, was fined. Now he is singing a different tune....that is not right.

A sad end to an otherwise great career.
