It is a part of history and should not be banned as if it never existed. 600,000 Americans gave their lives in the Civil War, a tragic loss that was necessary to purge our country of slavery.

I agree that the confederate flag should not be flown over public buildings because black Americans deserve consideration for their sensitivity to the confederate flag. Actually the confederate flag usage by racist whites after the Civil War has more to do with black sensitivities to it than the actual Civil War historical context.

I am a history buff and the Civil War is a critical part of our history. We cannot and should not deny our history by banning the confederate flag. It deserves to be flown over Civil War battlefields and confederate graveyards. What needs to be stopped is pushing it down the throats of black Americans in contexts that have nothing to do with its historical context.

    you asked two diff questions?......wow.

i dont think it should be on public buildings but...

i dont think it should be banned because i believe in freedom of belief no matter what I personally believe about the issue. how ever i wish people were a little bit more educated about what it means.

no i dont believe that flag is "racist" in todays society.

so if you support it i dont automatically look at you and go "oh they're racist"
buts that only because most people dont really know why that flag came to be.

they are told from diapers its their culture....and now mostly it is.....(mostly)

im no expert but this is what i gather:

"southerns" think. its a flag that brought the south together in a time when it was north vs. south. and that it symbolizes southern culture and all that entails.

everyone else thinks anyone who flys it is a cousin f'ing rascist hick.

now. im not the type of person who brings up slavery or black opression as a trump card. whats done is done. was it shitty? yes. im not saying we EVER forget. but i think its time for "us" (black people) to move the fuck on. were in a time where ANYONE can do ANYTHING. if they are willing to put the work in. but the government has spent so much time trying to "make up for slavery" by giving people of color more opportunities. that now black people(and this is a MAJOR generalization seeing as i myself am half black so dont be offended) expect things to be easier and feel "they desearve" bett...

to me: that flag represents a war. a war that came to be because the south wanted slavery and the north didnt. a flag the south made and claimed because they wanted to separate from the north to make there own country. a country in which they would have there own government and laws. and by having there own government also having the right to decide to keep slavery or not. they didnt want slavery abolished so they went to war. and we know the rest. thats what i learned (in school) and thats what i believe.

so i myself do not support that flag. but i dont think less of or judge people who do.

if you were brought up being told something your whole life. you would believe it whole heartedly and be willing to fight tooth and nail to keep it and i very much support that.

black people in the south fly that flag same as white.......they're just outnumbered.

now...dont get all hot and bothered about me saying i support anyone who flys that flag. be smart. i obviously dont mean racists or factions dedication to the advancements of whites only. i dont support what they are after or about and i dont support what that flag means to them. thats stupid.

this is a retraction. i now know that " most southerners" are fully educated on the origin of the confederate flag. and no longer think they are born into there "wrong"(for lack of a better term) beliefs

Hmmmmmmm .... I get the feeling that you, Charles, feel that blacks were the only ones who have ever been slaves. Not so! Check your Bible! And what about the 'serfs' during the Middle Ages. They were white and nothing more than slaves. If you were a slave, then fine, I can understand your feelings. But I doubt that you were. It's HISTORY, it's over. It's time to MOVE ON and stop falling back on it as an excuse for everything that goes wrong in your life!

I voted for undecided since, 2 seperate questions were asked. I was born and raised in the South. It's part of history. NO flag is ever to be flown above the US Flag. Any flag that is flown with or beside the American flag, is to be below the flag. I have no problem with it being flown on government buildings in the South, since it was the flag that was flown when going into battle. That's all it means, and it means nothing else. It's a historical flag.

That's fine. I appreciate your opinion, all I can say is it's part of the south's history. Maybe some see it as a racist flag, but, since I was raised not to see color, and since I wasn't there when all the slavery happened..I guess I'm just numb to it. I actually have more reason to be racist than most, since, I'm part cherokee, and the slaves were recruited to the calvary and gladly served, to kill native americans, while getting paid and being freed. May sound a bit bitter, but no one should blame anyone for what happened. I hold no grudges but find it a little silly to place blame on a flag and not people. The kkk should be told that if they use the flag then they can be fined or arrested, this way it takes their "symbolic" use of the flag away from them, and turns the flag back into what it was meant for. The flag of the south, and nothing else.

Not above the US flag. If you are a confiderate State this would be a part of your states history. But, not to be hung above the US State Flag.

PUBLIC BUILDINGS....NO. I don't care for that flag, nor anyone else flag, just like your sexual perefrence, kep it to your self and behind closed doors. That being said, hanging the flag from your personal house, PERSONAL, but driving up to a wal-mart or any other store, i wouldn't want to be seeing it. So keep Personal perspectives and opinions... PERSONAL!

it is a part of history and it has a lot of meaning to a lot of folks that has notting to do with color of skin if you read up on history the southern views were alot better for us than the north without getting to deep each state would have more power as it was suppose to be could use some of that now less fed power which gives people more power o I wish i was in the land of cotton

It should be flown in appropriate times and places and never above the state flag or US flag. The Confederate flag doesn't have the same symbolism as the Nazi flag. Nazi's wanted to annhilate the Jews (and other people, too) . The Confederacy was fighting for States Rights, and while that included slavery, it wasn't the only issue. I'm sensitive to the lyrics of trashy rap music, but that doesn't cause it to be banned from being boomed from vehicles in public places.

I believe they banned the Nazi flag in Germany, didn't they? Personally I think the Confederate flag should be banned, period. Everywhere. Yeah, yeah, I know the Southerners are our brethren and all that, but the flag is too closely associated with the slavery era. And when you lose a war, you lose the right to fly your flag. When we defeated the British, the first thing we did was take down their flag and put up our own.

The South lost the war, and therefore the flag should not be on top of the government buildings. It should not be banned from the property because it is part of history. Now, if it is incorporated into the state flag then it is a different flag. After the war, the flag was not flown over the SC State House til one of the anniversaries of the war. Now it is not on top of the State House, but it is still causing controversy for the state.

It is sad that the Confederate flag and the Christian flag are used by racist groups. Not all people who have a Confederate flag are racist. They may be "rebels" and/or Dukes of Hazzard fans.

The Civil War was over state's rights. One right they were seeking was the right to own slaves. I do not condone slavery, especially with the mistreatment that occured. But people seem to forget that other races were slaves, too... or maybe people simply weren't educated about that part of it. It is a sad part of United States history.

I AM SICK OF PC! If people want to be proud that they are/were southern it doesn't mean they are anti-black! It simply means they are SOUTHERN PROUD. One side of my family lost sons and wealth in the war between the states and I don't blame the black man for it, was not his fault. That war was fought for more than slavery. FLY The STARS AND BARS IF you like By God if the Damn Illegal's can pull Old Glory down and raise The DAMN MEX Flag over it and if OLD GLORY can be burned LEGALLY IN THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA, then By GOD IF I WANT TO FLY The Confederate Battle Flag/The Southern Cross/ Official Flag of the Confederacy/Confederate Navy Jack Whatever you call it - I DAMN WILL WITH PRIDE! It is a flag of honor, designed by the confederacy as a banner representing state's rights and still revered by the South. In fact, it still flies over the South Carolina capitol building. The South denies any relation to hate groups and denies them the right to use the flags of the confederacy for any purpose. I was BORN where the heart of the south burned to it's core. I have a lot of SOUTHERN PRIDE MYSELF!

It's part of the souths heritage. The Civil war wasn't just about freeing slaves. If American schools taught you properly, you would know this.

Our Country has a great history and history that we aren't proud of (like most countries) and facts are facts. Ignoring our history or pretending it didn't happen is silly.

The south (like the north) has learned many things since the civil war and there's no reason to remove it's heritage....btw, this is coming from a YANKEE! Born and raised in NY.

    And I'm not racist.

Btw, The KKK uses a Christian Cross to get their point across...should we ban the cross because some jack asses used it for hatefull reasons? No!

No if you would do that then all flags except the American flag should be flow and displayed. I feel that having Hamas, Black Panthers and other racist flags are protected by freedom of speech. I do not support hate groups and any kind, I feel that hate groups are weak and do nothing but spread hate and anger.

It is part of our history, like it or not. I think it should remain in museums and such, but I'm not sure it is appropriate just anywhere. Although the civil war WASN'T mostly about slavery, but about a way of life (industrial vs. agricultural) most believe slavery was the main issue. Given that, it would make sense to stop using it.

There are a lot of things that offend hell out of me, so if this flag offends someone too bad. To me the confederate flag represents the South, period. I have no sentimental attachment to it as I'm from the North, but I think it should be flown wherever people want it to be.
