Health Care
So my roommate is trying to stop his 1/2 a pack habit and wanted my help. I have never been a smoker and wanted to see if anyone on here has kicked the habit before. Any advice?
He got some prescribed medicine and other stuff (like Commit Lozenge) but couldn't or hasn't gone cold turkey. He bought a pack which I started rationing to him. I would give him 5 cigarettes a day, and if he wanted more, they would come out of the next days.
What do you think he should do? What can I do to help him?

This is a really personal thing. I smoked for 20 years and tried several different methods and failed on almost all of them. The thing that got me to quit was a chest x-ray and the radiologist telling me that, if I didn't quit soon, I'd end up with emphysema. Since my youngest child had just been born, I decided that I wanted to live long enough to see her graduate from college, if she goes that route, and give her away when she gets married. I finally was SCARED into quitting. I used the nicotine patch alone and it worked, but it was a struggle. I'm now smoke free for the past 8 years and feeling fine.
It will be totally up to your friend as to what will make him eventually REALLY quit. It's a very personal thing, like I said before. What worked for me, may or may not work for him. The important thing is that he keeps trying and that his circle of influence (you) encourage him every step of the way. -

This is how my cousin quit. It worked for him but I don't recommend this to anyone.
He drank a bottle of Patron Silver and smoked a whole pack in one night. Ever since that night, every time he even smells a cigarette he gets disgusted by it because he says he gets flash backs of the horrible hangover he had.

When the doc comes into your hospital room.....and tells you that you are lucky to be alive, that you had a heart attack, and that it's time for a decision....quit smoking or die........that's how my dad quit.....
