I thought it was rather well thrown in there- Hey, why is he breathing like that? Is there a history to him? What do you know! On Wookiepedia, it says he was a key player in the Clone Wars microsaga!.. and so forth.
Episodes IV, V, and VI did a good job of alluding to I, II, and III I thought. (Including fortelling Gungans)
It raised questions to noobs, and kept the uber geek enthralled. And since the point of the film is to make people ask questions about things (Remember how big a deal Bobba Fett was even BEFORE the re-release?) I think it provided another chance to get caught in the myth.
At least, IMO. -

I only make mention of Grevious because I had so many people coming up to me afterwards asking why he had asthma. Now don't get me wrong, I'll take any excuse to chat about Star Wars, I just thought this could been covered very quickly with a quick chide from Anakin about Mace and their last battle or an exchange between Obi-wan and Anakin on the flight in. All in all, the new trilogy was a nice way to capture a new generations interest and give us geeks something else to collect. :o)
