EACH breed association may have a different registration requirement as for as what a marking is. MOST REFER to a star as a star but some want it to be a certain size and in a precise location. I've registered a dozen different breeds of horses and they all have different requirements- The American Quarter Horse Association Vs. The Jockey Club. These are their requirements, they have a rule book that tell you what is a star, snip, strip, blaze, so forth.....The following is from their website <(http://www.jockeyclub.com/r... 45 days of receipt, the DNA/blood typing kit should be used and the sample sent to the laboratory. The fully completed and signed DNA/Blood Typing Identification form, along with a set of 4 color photographs of the horse (front, both sides and rear views) clearly showing the color and markings(or lack of markings) on the head, legs and body, must be submitted to The Jockey Club. If either of these requirements are not timely met, the owner may be required to restart the process by obtaining a new DNA/blood typing kit from The Jockey Club, and a restart fee may be assessed (see Fee Schedule). FALSE:
BLAZE A white mark spread over the forehead and the length of the
face. If the blaze is exaggerated to cover the entire front of
the face, the term "bald face" or "war bonnet" might be used.
STRIPE A white mark down the face, similar to a blaze but
narrower.
STRIP A white mark running partway down the face.
STAR A patch of white on the forehead.
SNIP A white or pink patch on the nose or lip.
WHORL A patch of hair swirling opposite to the surrounding hair,
usually found on the forehead.
FALSE they are not all stars.!!!!!

And I found the following descriptions...
Blaze: a wide white stripe down the middle of the face
Star: a white marking on the forehead, between or above the eyes
Strip, stripe, or race: a narrow white stripe down the middle of the face.
Snip: a white marking on the muzzle, between the nostrils
