How spicy is "too spicy"?

I use Tabasco as a basic ingredient in almost everything I cook, and as a condiment for foods someone else cooks. My fridge has many hot sauces, all of which I use, but using Tabasco as a guide, which level of heat do you call "too spicy"?

I grow habaneros both normal and Red Sovina and I eat them with almost anything. I am trying to find a source for a Balut Jolokai pepper which is supposed to be the hottest pepper in the world.

Good for you! I like them, but I don't eat them all the frequently. Have you looked at http://www.chilepepperinstitu... (for seeds) or http://www.tastewhatshot.com/... (for peppers)? Good luck! Thanks for the comments, and for the info!

"Mild" is not real Tabasco and should cease production immediately!

I have some habanero-fig jelly my mother made in the fridge. Perfect with cream cheese or peanut butter. Mmm...even a little on ice cream rocks.
  • raves     [-] highdesertgemini replied to squidz
I agree! It makes me giggle when they try to serve it as the house hot sauce at restaurants -- what a joke!

That jelly would be really good with jalepeno poppers, too...

none of these are extremely hot
  • raves     [-] highdesertgemini replied to austin316
You are right -- none of the Tabasco sauces are extremely hot! Do you enjoy hotter, like Dave's Insanity?
  • raves     [-] viper4358 replied to highdesertgemini
Dave's Insanity is a good one. I like to go to the hot sauce festival and try to find the hottest sauce they have. Then I stock up on it. If I tell my friends that something is "a little warm" they won't touch it with a stick! lol
  • raves     [-] highdesertgemini replied to viper4358
Insanity is a good one -- especially for wings... Where do they have a hot sauce festival? Sounds like fun! We have the same "is it hot?" problem here -- no, it's not hot to me, but...! Thanks for the comments!

I think that anything can be too spicy
  • raves     [-] highdesertgemini replied to ~TiFfNeY~ i love wes
True, that. Anything can be too spicy, but I have found it usually isn't...

    Answered Undecided

If my nose is running, due to the spice, it is too hot.
  • raves     [-] highdesertgemini replied to Bobbi Fleckman
If my nose doesn't run, the food isn't spicy enough!
  • raves     [-] Bobbi Fleckman replied to highdesertgemini
Can you taste the food, when it is that spicy? I can't. I just taste the heat. I do like spicy, but once the nose runs, there is no taste.
  • raves +2   [-] highdesertgemini replied to Bobbi Fleckman
Depends on the food -- if it's just a pepper, usually not! There is an art to creating hot spicy food with flavour other than the heat, and many people rely on the heat to detract from the lack of other flavours. With well-prepared spicy hot food there should be a symphony of flavours (just like food without spicy heat)!

    I hate hot stuff.
  • raves     [-] highdesertgemini replied to Patty Ann
I'm presuming you mean you hate spicy food, not hot food...
Thanks for the comment! It's good to hear from all points of view!
  • raves     [-] Patty Ann replied to Patty Ann
Yep, you're right, I should have clarified. I love hot food, just
not spicy food. It amazes me that people can eat those hot peppers and
salsas. The few times I've tried it, I literally had to drink quarts of
water. For those who do love the spicy stuff -- don't your tongues or
    throats burn????
Or, don't you get that sensation?? Or, what do you to get rid of the burning sensations?
I'd love to know. It may just be a case of people have different sensitivities in their taste buds.
  • raves +1   [-] highdesertgemini replied to Patty Ann
I knew what you meant -- just being "smart"...
Yes, my tongue sometimes burns, my eyes water, my nose runs, I choke and cough, my throat feels like it's on fire -- but it's all worth it! Tortillas, bread, water, soda, beer -- whatever it takes to cool the fire before the next luscious bite...
Different taste buds, and different kinds of exposure to spicy foods -- if you get fed spicy food, when you are young, you kind of get used to it!
