its ridiculous. its like they come over here looking for the "American Life" but want to come over here and live 3 families to a 4 room house, like in mexico, speak spanish, like in mecixo, and work their asses off, like in mexico... you came here for an America, not a clean mexico. stop wasting my money making me print in two languages when you can only read one... -

I have noticed that everyone is picking out Mexico. I know it has to do with the second language part, but has anyone else noticed the other races that come over and don't speak English? Yeah Mexicans are a growing population in America, but it sounds like more hate towards hispanics not speaking English then any other race. Could be wrong...but if you read all the post it sounds pretty correct.

Foud something to boggle your minds...
The most recent efforts to promote English as the official language has come as more and more immigration from Spanish-speaking and Eastern nations (such as China and Vietnam) has brought an influx of non-English speakers to the United States. According to the 1990 Census, 13.8 percent of U.S. residents speak some non-English language at home. 2.9 percent, or 6.7 million people, did not speak English at all, or could not speak it well.
Alittle food for thought I guess... -

Would that mean that I would be required to learn Spanish as well just in case I walk into a store that was ran by spanish speaking people only? Sorry, I have no desire to learn Spanish. It isn't to be rude towards anyone from there, or the language itself. I'd just rather learn German.... :) -

If I had said this once I have said this a million times....
This is America, the melting pot, if you want ot melt you have to learn the same language taught by default to our children, that is English, and if you do not like it, stay in the country you came from. I am a strong proponent of being multi lingual, but for "Official" purposes, it should be English and only English... -

We don't need to make any language our "Second Official Language." I have nothing against people speaking other languages -- in fact I encourage people learning more than one language. The United Nations switched from French to English as its official language. We only need one primary language for practical reasons. -

Uh, i think it's a good idea.. people are so racist these days.
You speak Spanish, so what? You speak Japanese, so what? You speak French, so what? It's not like it was your decision to learn any of these languages first. Besides, if you're bilingual or trilingual, it makes a most educated person out of you and gives you more job opportunities EVERYWHERE. Not just America. =]. My opinion. -

I don't agree that there should be more than one official language in the United States. English is good enough for the rest of Americans who have made a lot of sacrifices in order to enjoy life here legally. The issue of who was here first is irrelevant. -
Answered Yes
Well, since the Spanish-speaking community's population is growing so quickly, it wouldn't surprise me if Spanish does become the second language. I know some people are really put off by this, but it doesn't bother me since I pick languages up pretty easily. -
Executive Order 13166 says that any entity which receives federal funds must provide whatever services it offers in any foreign language spoken by anyone likely to receive those services. It says failure to do so is likely to constitute "discrimination on the basis of national origin" as prohibited by Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights law. Signed by President Clinton on August 11, 2000, the order directs all federal agencies to draft plans to "improve access to federally conducted or federally assisted programs for persons who, as a result of national origin, are limited in their English proficiency.”

No I think there should be only one-English. Every other nationality that immigrated to the US had to learn English(many of our ancestors). Why make a special rule for the Spanish-speaking immigrants? The whole point is we are a diverse melting pot that unites to become Americans. If there should be any second or equal language it should be Native American....they were here first. -
