Does the Age of a teenage girls partner influence her to have sex younger?

Teens and Sex
Why teens start having sex in the first place. Environment, age of partner and perceived family support may affect young people's decisions to have sex.
By:Alison Calabia

While the media bombards us with alarming statistics about the number of teenagers having sex, few reports shed light on what might encourage teens to become sexually active in the first place. Three studies offer some insight into sexually active teens: environment, age of partner and perceived family support may affect young people's decisions to have sex.

In a study presented at a meeting of the American Public Health Association (APHA), researchers at the University of Kentucky followed 950 teenagers at 17 high schools in Kentucky and Ohio from 9th to 11th grades. They found evidence that teens who have intercourse tend to think their friends are too, even if they're not. "You're 2.5 times more likely to have sex by the 9th grade if you think your friends are having sex -- whether or not they really are," says Katharine Atwood, assistant professor at the Kentucky School of Public Health. Plus, teens tended to overestimate how many of their friends were sexually active. Only 33 percent of kids in the study had had sex by the 9th grade, but 31 percent said that most or all of their friends had had sex. "If you can persuade them that fewer are having sex than they think," she says, "that can have a significant impact on their behavior."

Among young girls, a partner's age is a risk factor for sexual activity. "The younger the girl is at the age of first intercourse, the more likely she is to have a much older partner," says Harold Leitenberg, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of Vermont. His study, published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, found that of 4,201 girls in 8th through 12th grades, those who lost their virginity between ages 11 and 12 tended to have partners five or more years older. For girls who had sex later in adolescence, the partner's age disparity was much smaller. Early sexual initiation was also associated with a number of behavioral problems. "Ignoring the age of the partners, the earlier a girl was when she first had intercourse, the greater her risk of suicide attempts, alcohol use, drug abuse, truancy and pregnancy," Leitenberg says.

The good news is that while teen sex may not be wholly preventable, the health risks it involves can be reduced through communication within the family. More research presented at the APHA meeting showed that frequent parent-child discussions about sex and its dangers may prevent teenagers from engaging in risky sexual behavior. Researchers at Emory University questioned 522 sexually active African-American adolescents about the openness and support that their families provided. Adolescents who felt that their families were more supportive were less likely to have unprotected sex, and thus were at a lesser risk for pregnancy and disease

This is why it is not appropriate for older males to date teenaged girls, under 18.

I think it depends on the partner....because my friends daughter is 12 and she confides in me stuff she cant talk to her parents/friends about..and she had a boyfriend for a year and they broke up because she made 8th grade cheerleader..so now she has a new boyfriend that is a freshman (keep in mind shes at the end of her 7th grade year)..and he has put so much pressure on her to have sex (she is still a virgin thank god!!!)...but at the same time...her previous boyfriend came from a good, prominant family in the community, and her new boyfriend is not from the same positively influential background as her previous guy...so i think age, personality, moral background, religious background all make up what influence someone has on a young, impressionable girl...

most boys, regardless of if they came from a god-fearing home or not, mostly have one thing on their minds--and they're not thinking with the brain on their shoulders...

Very true. But the problem now is that television and movies have such a high sexual content that I can understand kids thinking that everyone is doing it. That is why it is so important for parents to have honest and open conversations with their children about sex, both boys and girls. An unwanted pregnancy can change a person's entire life. I would rather put my child on some form of birth control than risk them screwing up their entire future. And older partners are so much more likely to be sexually active that it puts too much pressure on the younger girl who is not emotionally secure enough to see this for what it is.

You're right. Television and movies have had an influx in showing teen sex/ pregnancy within the last 10 years than ever, versus barely showing it. Remember--there was a time when the girl was removed from society til she had the baby... but instead of doing that, parents should talk with their children and vice versa. I don't understand where the stigma comes from with parents/children not speaking. It's total foolishness really, and both suffer from it long term.

I would tell the child about sex and birth control, but I would first stress how intimate, spiritual, and then physical sex is. People (mostly Christians) say "abstain," but I say "just hold your fuckin' horses... it's not that big of a goddamn deal." *smile*

I figure that the parent's word should be the final rule-- the parent should stress to the child whatever needs to be stressed and at that point the child should know right from wrong. People act as if it's difficult. My mother told me what's what and I'm still childless and dramaless--and about to graduate from college with a BA in Communication (instead of an MRS./ STD/ BM--babymomma)

I had a crush on an older boy when I was 14 (he was 19 at the time) and if he would have had interest in me, I am quite sure I would have had sex with him ... Girls are hoping and dreaming of a great romance at that age but they fail to see that sex and love are not the same ...

And what would be the #2 reason an older boy would date a younger teen girl?
  • raves +2   [-] patblue1947 replied to Mollybdamned
There is no #2 reason. Because if the boy/man really loved the young girl then he would be willing to wait until she became old enough to emotionally handle the relationship. So to bully a child into something she didn't really have the ability to understand would be a form of child abuse. I am older but I know that my parents had a large age difference when they met. My Father was 40 and my Mother was 17. It was WW2 and young high school girls wrote to soldiers. But, they got married first then they had sex and my Mother was a very mature 17. She set the standards and my Father respected her for having them. They were married for 32 years until my Father died. She is now an active 81 year old.

It depends on the partner but most older partners that are with younger girls or boys I'd say are there for sex so I't really depends I hope this makes since

I believe it is just common sense to not let your child have friends boys and girls who are older, it will only lead to trouble.

I've always felt that kids shouldn't have close friends who are too much older than they are. Younger kids tend to want to impress older ones, and feel more pressure to do whatever is being done. More often than not, what's being done shouldn't be done.

as a mother of 15 girl, I believe the fact that they are influenced by their friends. I know part of her friends are virgins some are not, my role isto try to pursade her in the right direction. I hope she waits untill she is married or at least out of high school, I don't like to talk to her about sex but I do. I don't promote sex. But she needs to know I am here for her. I do have aproblem with how widely the pill is distributed I feel it is saying sex is ok, I have told my daughter when she chooses to have sex (hopefully on her wedding night) that the pill alone does not protect against std's.

My co-worker at work has two daughters. She married two times because she was pregnant and neither worked out. She is married to the third husband. Her older daughter had a child out of wedlock, and then had a second before she got finally married. When my friend found out her second daughter was having sex at 15 she put her on birth control pills. This daughter just graduated from college and is pursuing an advanced degree program. Sometimes you do what you have to do to protect your child's future. This girl is more likely to wait until she is finacially secure before she has children. This story is not atypical.
