Al, Bill, and Cindy have worked for the same company for 15 years. Al makes $450,000; Bill makes $65,000; and Cindy makes $33,000. If the top 1% of employees take a 10% pay decrease then the bottom 20% would increase their salary by 20%. Is this fair?
Al is a Senior VP and has worked his way up from a Jr. Acct.
Bill is the Mgr of Maintenance
Cindy is a receptionist

Answered No - someone who has more responsibility should make more money

If Cindy wants to make more money, she should go back to school and get some letters after her name. A lot of employers will reimburse you for the cost of schooling if it pertains to the industry they are in.

If you want to make money, you must have the skills and be willing to work hard for it and to take risks...from nothing nothing can come.

It's not fair but I am sure Cindy would get her butt kicked by Al and Bill if it did happen!

When the Democrats get back in office the pendulum of wealth will swing back to the middle class (what is left of it). The CEO of United Health Care makes 3 times more than the combined salaries of all other employees(including, MDs,RNs etc) ceo united health care 3 times combined salaries employeesincluding mdsrns

The Sr. VP more than likely has invested vast sums and a huge block of time in their education to obtain an MBA. The Sr. VP didn't go home at 5:00 and only worked Mon. - Fri. to get where they are. The Sr. VP has far more responsiblity than does Mgr. of Maint. and the Receptionist. If the Mgr. and Recep. wanted more pay perhaps they should have invested in education that afforded them a higher paying job. This question is tantemount to asking if surgeons should be paid the same as hospital techs.?

i didn't say the same pay
    but a more equitable salary

    thanks

gamman...My error. They are being paid, equitably for the value of their service to their employer.

No rich people no jobs no jobs no taxes to collect no taxes to collect no welfare no monthly checks no monthly checks hello soup line and be happy.

now, do you want to actually answer the question?
we're speaking of more equitable salaries - who said anything about welfare? we're talking about people who put in 40 hours a week receiving a living wage - not the same wage and not being paid for not working

I cared enough about my family that I worked full time and went to school full time to earn a degree. Now that I applied myself to get this education for the betterment of my family, without government grants or any other kind of help I'm paying off my college debt by myself I should not get a wage that reflects my effort and education?
  • raves     [-] by gamman
i'm not suggesting that everyone is paid the same $$$ but that everyone has a salary that they can live on.

yes the sr. vp should make more than the receptionist but shouldn't the receptionist make a wage that allows her to live in a decent (not posh) place?

    thanks
  • raves     [-] by JDC cross carrier
Before I applied myself to get this education I worked in the unions, the unions live to see the living wage increases let's call it what it is minimum wage increase. For every minimum wage increase the unions get a living wage increase, the problem with that is those that do not have a minimum wage job or a union jobs do not get this increase so what happens is inflation. People who do not get the increase in the middle of the low income and up income suffer because everything cost more to make or produce, all this is starting to sound like what happen in the last years.

If the company pays every employee a decent wage then the employee would be much happier and work harder for a company that cares about there lives. In turn making the employee care more about the company. Therefor making the company profits matter to them more and the employee and the company grow together.

I believe that if the employees don't make a decent or least living wage, we are in for bigger problems in the long term view.

You decided to hire 'em, now pay 'em! *grin*

Ok, an edit -- after reading a few of the responses I have to add that I would not reward Cindy simply for being Cindy, but would provide my employees an opportunity to earn enough to live in a safe neighborhood, purchase safe healthy food, and not churn out latch-key kids. Mostly because the kids will just egg my house, and you know it's all about me. *grin*

Employers should pay a fair and competitive wage. I know I work very hard and I would not accept a pay cut to give someone a pay raise. I am not saying that the person making the most always has the most responsibility, but this is usually the case.

But only if the top percentage are willing otherwise it is stealing. I believe there is a moral imperative to pay a living wage. On the other hand there is also a moral imperative to supply an honest days work for an honest days pay and sometimes that can be a real problem.

Then, she doesn't get to make as much as the big boys. Such is life.

do you believe that a company has a social obligation to ensure that their employees are able to make a decent living near their workplace?
  • raves +3   [-] by SparkleyFlowers (LMAO WTF FTW)
Yes, to a certain extent. I think your obligation to yourself to make sure you earn a decent living is just as important, though. We have to take our lives into our own hands.
  • raves +2   [-] by gamman
true - we need to be responsible for ourselves

it's just a little irritating to see ceo's making so much more $$$ over the past 30 years whilst the 'average' and 'low income' workers are either making less or being laid off
  • raves +4   [-] by SparkleyFlowers (LMAO WTF FTW)
Yes, I see your point. I'm pretty sure, though, that the CEO worked a lot harder to be in his spot in life than the receptionist did.
