Have you had to kill somebody before? I haven't. Are you talking execution or war. May be someone breaking into your home. That could be a case of kill or be killed..........................

For those of a religious persuasion, it comes down to "an eye for an eye". One who has taken a life should give up his own. From a more secular point of view, one who commits a horrendous crime and is found guilty by a jury of his peers has demonstrated that he is not fit to be part of our society. Putting him in prison for life, with free food, no obligation to do anything, satellite tv and radical lawyers ready to sue on their behalf if they don't get enough sprinkles on their ice cream is not punishment of the murderer, it is punishment to all of the rest of us whose tax dollars keep him alive.

Don't get me wrong. I think the standard for applying capital punishment should be fairly high. But if the People decide that that high standard has been met, then that person should no longer have any rights, including the right to live.

I think the point of the death penalty is to say that this criminal has taken away someone else's right to live, thus negating their own rights to live and I think that that's pretty fair.

There has to be a penalty that even criminals understand.

in some rare instances it is necessary to use the death penalty.First, there would have to be certainty the person is guilty of the crime. But with the tests we have now it's possible. The ONLY justifiable reason for the death penalty is that the person is such a danger to society that ONLY the death penalty would suffice.
And there are ppl who have committed such henious crimes and would do so again that the death penalty MIGHT be justifiable in those cases.
Revenge is not a justifiable reason to use the death penalty.I accept the teaching of the Church(Catholic)which basically says the same:
"in cases of extreme gravity.” The Catechism further states;"capital punishment may be inflicted as “the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.” In contemporary society, would be “very rare, if not practically non-existent”That reiterates what JPII wrote in his encylical Evangelium Vitae. For this reason i have to go with the undecided category.

If you mean capitol punishment, then it is necessary, because it has been proven to reduce murders and other heinous crimes. Also, why pay to keep someone alive that has no respect for others rights, and has proven so by killing or raping multiple times?

I have always been against the death penalty, but not for the reasons most people submit. Most people worthy of the death penalty have committed horrific crimes and caused their victims to suffer. I think people like that should suffer too, at least as much as their victims. Dying is too easy.
  • raves +1   [-] by jackrorabbit
unfortunately in prison, they get an easy life at taxpayers expense.
  • raves +2   [-] by JRenee~DTNS~PUMA
I agree, they need to suffer the same way their victims did.

Great question! Interesting answers. Unfortunately, mine is not very original or interesting. I just don't understand why we do this, it doesn't stop people from killing. If anything the criminals in jail are better off in someways being killed, life in prison would be unbearable. IMHO
  • raves +2   [-] by jackrorabbit
Actually it has been shown to reduce the percentage of murder.

Unfortunately, we have some people who are simply unable or unwilling to live in society without committing hideous crimes.....I'd rather see that person put to death than continually let them loose, as does happen, and see them kill other innocent people, especially children.......

  • raves +1   [-] by jackrorabbit
Peace is always achieved after a war, but rarely before it. Just look as Israel and all of the "peace" that they have had.

Seems a little ironic, doesn't it? There are too many innocent people put to death, just to name one reason why I'm skeptical of the death penalty. Even when guilty, I don't think "revenge" is the answer. It doesn't deter, and it doesn't bring back the dead. It's just more killing.
  • raves     [-] by jackrorabbit
It does deter, but your reason is the best I have seen, and it is why it takes over 20 years to put someone to death.

we kill people to show them you are not going to rape a little girl and then burn her body and think that there will be no consequences. thou shalt not kill and if you are going to be a evil heartless bastard that hurt innocent kids and americans you deserve the death penalty. there many people that are in jail and they have done horrible crimes!

GO DEATH PENALTY, if you have the nerve to kill someone else out of cold blood then you deserve to have the same punishment thrust upon you! I think that however you kill someone is the way you should be killed, like if you torture someone by cutting of limbs, fingers or whatever you should be tortured in the exact same mannor. AND ALL CHILD MOLESTORS SHOULD BE PUT THROUGH THE MOST INHUMANE TYPE OF PUNISHMENT ONE CAN IMAGINE!!!

It really isn't a good deterrent. I am against the death penalty for the most part...but I do think that we must reserve that ability to execute when people remain a threat to people's lives.
  • raves +1   [-] by Ali
If they're in prison, are they still a threat to people's lives? Or are you refering to other inmates?
  • raves +2   [-] by The Hand of John
yes, or guards and prison staff. I think that is very rare though. I also think that certain fundamentalists that insight murder should be considered a on going threat as well.
