Trader Joe's cuts Chinese food imports. Should other retail stores follow their example?

With customers worried about the safety of food imported from China, Trader Joe's said on February 11th it will withdraw garlic, frozen spinach, and other “single ingredient” items from its shelves by April 1.. The discount gourmet retailer will continue selling items made with ingredients from China. Although the 300-store chain says it believes the food is safe, China has been cited for using dangerous pesticides and for fertilizing its agricultural crops with sewage, as well as high levels of antibiotics in its seafood industry. The US has restricted the import of shrimp, eel and catfish because of excessive antibiotic and chemical residues. What do you SodaHeads think? Such a great idea that other retailers should follow?

Answered Yes. Other retailers should follow this lead!

In addition to health and food safety concerns, there's also an economic issue. American companies move manufacturing to China because they can pay the Chinese next to nothing and avoid all that "troublesome" government oversight, which not only takes jobs away from Americans, but compromises quality and safety. Then Americans buy those products, which rewards companies for sending jobs to China -- and ensures that the cycle will continue. Meanwhile, American manufacturing jobs disappear, American corporations dodge paying fair wages (and taxes), and China continues buying up our country and loaning us money. This vicious circle has to stop. America needs to return to self-sufficiency. Corporations must be forced to return manufacturing to the U.S., hire Americans at livable wages and pay their fair share of taxes. Corporate CEOs don't need or deserve multi-million dollar salaries, bonuses and "golden parachutes." Their greed is killing us all!

Well, if its been tested and is proven unhealthy, then yeah, get rid of it!
Although... doing this DOES help reduce our dependency on other countries. :/

About a month ago I actually sent an e-mail to Trader Joe's regarding garlic and other fresh produce from China and My decision not to purchase it any longer. They replied back with a statement assuring me of the extra measures they take in inspecting and acknowledged my concerns. But, my concerns are not as much as safety but mostly on the negative environmental impacts of shipping food in from all around the globe and my intent to buy most of my produce at the Farmers Market to support the small and local farmers.

If we had more local stuff we'd actually be enriching the economy though.

That is a challenge-at least as far as manufactured goods are concerned. There are the Farmers Markets in most cities and this way we can at least support the independent small farmer-I like being able to actually talk to the people that are involved with growing the food I eat. Hey, right now Hass Avocados are in season-$1.50 for a one pound bag (3 to 5 ea bag) and lemons are $1.00 per bag (4 to 5 ea. bag)

Looking at it at a safety reason I think other retailers should do it. But its hard to get a business to stop, considering it will cost them profit.

Yes and sometimes under slave labor conditions- It's O-K if you have no conscience. The high cost of Low Prices has started to effect wages all around the globe-including here. And now I here stories like the one on Democracy Now that reported about the Crucifixes that were made under slave labor conditions that demanded 14 or 16 hour work day 6 days a week, employees as young as 14-made in china but either not marked or marked made in Italy.

China is a commie-socialist country ... not only are they spying and stealing our technologies, they're buying up our wealth to manipulate us with their pro-commie socialist ideals. The sooner we stop trading with them and begin to rely on American workers in American factories for American good, the better off we will be.

because an ingredient is a part of the food
it is not necessarily made in china just used it could have been made in America and be safe
the ones made in china definitely but no it has a lot of pieces how do you know the ingredients used couldn't have put them in in the us ? tell me why

This will drive up prices, but I think we should try to buy locally anyhow.
  • raves +2   [-] by larkztongue
Yes, but if it's from an American Farmer, our $ stays here.We have out-sourced most of our MFG, the last thing we should do is to out-source our Food Needs!
I don't mind spending a little more-and buying local means it's fresher,(not a month old in a container) , therefore it has more nutrients and so it's better for us

Besides that, if the world goes to hell, at least we'll have a shot at surviving, this country will turn into a mess if serious war breaks out and imports slow or stop, and force us to rely on what we're producing. YIKES!

Stuff coming from Mexico and some parts of Central/South America are about a million times worse. China is getting a lot of bad press between the Olympics, Dufar and lead, but considering the main "concern" seems to be pesticides big whoop? They've been using dangerous/unsanitary/unappealing (nightsoil anyone?) farming practises for decades or longer, and they still have about a hundred million marching men being fed daily...

I think it is a big deal when the head of China's FDA was executed because of the toxic ingredients in their export foods and drugs. What about about all the cats and dogs that died from melamine in the pet food that came from China. In the case of the toothpaste that was warned about by the FDA, a product called diethylene glycol that is used in antifreeze had been mislabeled in China. It was exported as a chemical called 99.5% glycerin that is safe for toothpaste. China produces 80% of the world's wheat gluten which is used in most baked products such as cakes and cookies. They produce 80% of the sorbic acid which is a common preservative. About 80% of U.S. seafood is imported, and China was the largest exporter of U.S. shrimp and catfish. China is one of the largest exporters of canned vegetables, processed foods, fruit juice including 50% of the apple juice that the U.S. consumes.

People should think twice before shopping. You don't know what kind of toxic ingredients are in the food you buy. And China isn't getting s lot of bad press. How many things h
