Do you think Senate Bill 2433, The Global Poverty Act of 2007, sponsored by Barack Obama is a good bill for the American Taxpayer?

SENATE BILL 2433 – GLOBAL POVERTY ACT OF 2007

A nice-sounding bill called the "Global Poverty Act," sponsored by Democratic presidential candidate and Senator Barack Obama, is up for a Senate vote on Thursday and could result in the imposition of a global tax on the United States. The bill, which has the support of many liberal religious groups, makes levels of U.S. foreign aid spending subservient to the dictates of the United Nations.

Senator Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was trying to rush Obama's 'Global Poverty Act' (S. 2433) through his committee without hearings. The legislation would commit the US to spending 0.7 percent of gross national product on foreign aid, which amounts to a phenomenal 13-year total of $845 billion over and above what the US already spends," on foreign aid. "It was scheduled for a Thursday vote but was moved up a day, to Wednesday, and rushed through by voice vote. Conservative Senators have now put a 'hold' on the legislation, in order to prevent it from being rushed to the floor for a full Senate vote." The House passed this bill in September. It's now getting rushed through the committee in the Senate, to soak the US taxpayers again to fund global, liberal, feel-good garbage legislation.

Senator Obama wrote the bill. This is just the tip of the iceberg, should he win.

Now, the bill has defined the term millennium development goals as the goals set out in the declaration given by the United Nations. Just so you know, those Millennia’s goals not only care about poor starving children, there's other ideas in there as well. For instance, the declaration commits nations to ban small arms and weapons, ratifying a series of treaties including the International Criminal Court treaty, the Kyoto protocol, the Convention on Biological Diversity.

All this comes from the candidate who says we should be helping Americans first?

    I have felt for a long time that the rich, especially the Hollywood people, should spend some of their millions on helping starving & homeless people all over the world rather than spend it on huge, glamorous parties, which I think is gross. Finally, more & more of these people are seeing the light. I do not think every American should participate through taxes, etc. as they cannot afford it & many are on the brink of poverty themselves. I have a special yearning to help these poor, starving kids all over the world, including America. Yes, we have them too. But nobody should be forced to do so. Obama wants to bring this great country to it's knees & in submission to the United Nations.

    Let's see if I get this correctly...
    "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

    First question: Why is this bill allowed to see the light of day when it is clearly Unconstitutional?
    Second question: Why are you trying to rush this bill through without hearings?

    "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;"

    I don't see anything in here where my tax dollars are supposed to go anywhere but HERE. This bill is unconstitutional!

    Contrary to all the rumors and misinformation being distributed about the Global Poverty Act, merely strengthens the United States' commitment to the goals we set in 2000. The legislation neither authorizes nor obligates the federal government to spend more money. Rather, it seeks to put our current foreign aid programs into a comprehensive strategy involving trade policy, debt cancellation, and private sector efforts to ensure that existing U.S. programs are more effective and efficient. The legislation calls for a strategy to determine the right mix of aid, trade and debt policies and investment. The strategy also includes the private sector, civil society organizations, and the developing countries themselves as critical components in global development. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated the bill would cost less than $1 million to implement.

I don't get my information from them...as it is fabricated and exaggerated and grossly inaccurate. So no thank you...     I understand as American's we want to help other countries, but shouldn't we worry about the proverty in the U.S., first? With the ecomony crisis that we are facing in our nation, can we really afford to add another $845 billion to what we already payout?? I think everyone will find out that America will be a 2nd thought, if Obama is in our White House.

    This information is from the library of congress. This bill was introduced On March of 2007 by Adam Smith, Senator of Washington state. The bill was passed on Sept 25, 2007 in congress but not signed by the president.

    The number for the bill was H.R. 1302 Global Proverty Act 2007. So for all you inquirying minds that look up the originater of this bill.......it was not Barack Obama. He did introduce a Global Proverty Act in Dec 2007, but it has not been scheduled for debate. Therefore, it is wrong to assume his act is a carbon copy of Sen Adams. No information is given to the structure of the bill.

    This piece of garbage, as you refer to it, was passed in 1990 and it has been amended several times. The important issue is that it was not originated by Sen Obama as the blogs and right-wing want everyone to believe. I should I read a blog when I can go to the source?

    You're wrong about the Millennium Development Goals. None of the goals mention small arms bans, Kyoto, nor the ICC Treaty. The Goals come from the Millennium Declaration which does mention these things but the Goals do not. The Obama bill only deals with one of the Goals, eradicating global poverty. The U.S. Government has already agreed to both the Declaration and the Goals. The Obama bill only asks the president to better participate in these agreements that we have already made.

    The number of web sites that contain misinformation is amazing. A well informed citizen in this day and age must seek the truth from the original sources.

    No bill in the Senate or the House mentions any Tax increase of 845 billion. This bill is only a extension of the bill passed in 1990 (under President Bush Sr) and extended again in 2005 under the present administration. The bill S.2433 is regarding the agreement reached at the summit of the Group of Eight (G-8) nations in July 2005, leaders (note this includes President Bush), from all eight participating countries committed to increase aid to Africa from the current $25,000,000,000 annually to $50,000,000,000 by 2010, and to cancel 100 percent of the debt obligations owed to the World Bank, African Development Bank, and International Monetary Fund by 18 of the world's poorest nations.
