Question U.S. Government

Should the government in Massachusetts allow the people to vote on the issue of same-sex/gay marriage?

Should the government in Massachusetts allow the people to vote on the issue of same-sex/gay marriage?
Massachusetts Democrats killed an effort to let voters decide on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Now the Democrats want to repeal a law that prohibits homosexual marriage. The Democrats won't let either law go before the people.

Because I don't think it should even be an issue. I think that gay people should have the right to "marry." Call it a civil union...call it whatever you want....but they should have the same rights as hetero couples do as far as healthcare, death benefits, children, etc....
Separation of church and state...god may say that it's wrong....but not everyone believes in god, so why should they have to abide by his laws?

Because the people know the differnce between what's right and wrong. Then again since when does what we the people want matter? Even when the people vote it down. The sodmites er homosexuals will just shop it to some judge that will deside in their favor. Cause the people didn't vote the "right" way............................. like they did here in the great state of the Communist Democratic People's Republic of California

I feel I have to interject on the issue that california voters repaled the current civil rights issue, This has happened many times before, during the civil rights arguement of the 60s'.... In 1965 voters passed a resolution that would in effect overturn the brown vs/ B.O.E. decision in Clay county and in Randolph county.... Only to be overturned by the GA supreme court 3 months later citing the same civil rights argument that CA supreme courted recently cited.... CA sup court Ronald M. George cited the argument that ill informed voters passed an illegal propisition due to the CA ruling citing a 60-year-old precedent that struck down a ban on interracial marriage in California.
The same voter propisitions have been passed in many states everything from banning interracial marrige to restricting public education to "whites" in many states. The ruling was subsequintly passed after many states passed public voter propisitions restricting the rights of many based on the views of a few. "Even if city/state/county/fed resolutions are passed they may not hinder the rights of of those to the constitution has granted" chief justice R.M. George.

This is issue not unlike the "moral majority" passing laws regarding segregation and interracial marriage against the constitution of the united states..... due to an interpretation of scriptures in the bible.
Baised on every single poll on SH I would have to say that a much greater majority of people...

The problem is, narrow minded religious conservatives want to implement their religious views by discriminating against gays. Discrimination is always wrong and even more so when cloaked in disguise of relgion.

I hit the wrong button it should be no. So, why should they write discrimination into their law? Why should the government be into peoples lives that personally? We need less government not more.

ok..let me ask a different question to all those who want to reply "yes" to this question.
Do you want a majority "vote" to decide the following for you?
    1. Your retirement benefits should go to your kids after you?
    2. Your kids should be allowed to go to private school?
    3. You should get a divorce if your spouse cheats on you?

Hey Archie, Take a look at the, ahem, 'top comment'. Wat a joke. Hank says he's in law enforcement. I think they ought to take away his deputy dawg badge for stupidity. Look at his image; enough said?

i would like the option to vote for the private school vs public school decision. Dems do not even want to consider vouchers for private schools.
I am forced to support public schools, but would love to take that same tax money i pay to the public schools and give it to private schools that teach to educate.
so, yes. bring the votes on.

Absolutely not. How dare anyone think that they should be able to vote on another persons rights? How about voting to allow interracial couples? Isn't that rediculous???

The government was created with three branches of government to act as a check and balance on each other. The Judicial branch interprets the law. No one should change the Constitution to appease a bunch of bigots. The court ruled that a ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. Just like courts have ruled it is unconstitutional to prohibit women from voting and such.

Democrats killed an effort to let voters decide :

Proves they're the party of the party !
Did you really think the Dems cared about the voice of the people.??
  • raves +1 -1 [-] by msliz0
No, they care about equality... for EVERYONE!

that's why the dems voted against the civil rights act in the 1960's ?
    ;]
  • raves +1 -1 [-] by msliz0
    we're not in the 1960's.

true, but the democratic party is still for the democratic machine.

Have they lowered our taxes under Clinton or Bush?

They keep talk about taxing the rich, but in raising taxes on big business they hurt our incomes.
  • raves +1 -1 [-] by msliz0
so.... what does this have to do with the question?
  • raves +2   [-] by Jwalden
to some degree nothing, except , it does show the dems don't care about people they care about power.

and yes that can be argued towards both parties.

    Answered Yes

It is the peoples' right to choose how they intend to rule their state. Elected representatives are just that, people chosen to represent, not decide for, the people. If it is evident that an elected representative is not abiding by those he should be representing, the people have a right to voice their opinions and be heard.
  • raves +4   [-] by Saoirse~STPS~YWC~NO PALIN FVMA
So are implying that the people have a right to voice their opinion and make an unconstitutional law? What would stop a state, say Maine, with a 97% white population from voting on a constitutional amendment saying that blacks can't marry?
  • raves   -2 [-] by The Governator
Hey, the entire point is we have a government of for a by the people, so if it is the will of the people, it should be so. However, I really think you shouldn't try to call Maine a state filled with White Retards, it's not nice!

The most important thing I was talking about was just its the state of for and by the people, so THEY are the ones to decide.
  • raves +2   [-] by msliz0
not on other people's civil rights.
  • raves +1   [-] by Archie
No governator, that would be immoral and more like "dictatorship" or "communism"...where majority decides about the rights of minority. In a democracy voices of "minority" needs to be heard too.
P.S. by "minority" I don't mean racial minority but "voting-minority"
  • raves +2 -1 [-] by msliz0
am i missing something here? nowhere did i see you even suggest that maine is a state filled with white (oh, my favorite word) 'retards'. This is one of my points about these religious FREAKS; they completely make up things and then say 'you said it'. They are disgusting excuses for human beings... Peace out SLM.
