Do you think buying an extended warranty on a large appliance is a good idea?

I purchased an extended warranty from Maytag Dependability Plus on my dryer, only to find out they will only fix it until the purchase price of the dryer is met. If you need an expensive part to fix your apppliance, they will cash you out with a check for the balance of your purchase price. They wrote me a check for $96.40 Try to buy a new dryer for that! I was under the impression they would fix the dryer no matter what was wrong with it!( It had been repaired two times after I bought it new.)

Extended warranties are a rip off. A big ticket item like a washer or dryer should last you 10-15 years or more, and by the time it finally goes, you're better off just buying a new one.

With how cheaply made things are today, I think it's more foolish not to buy one. Consumer reports had an article in summer 07' that said that 1 out of five appliances is a lemon. Would you want to be in that 20%? On top of things being made poorly today, a customer also has to worry about the computer boards that are on most appliances today. How many times does your computer give you problems?

It's a pain in the rear but it can be totally worth the effort.
Sorry about your warranty problems: It is indeed your money, and they're to provide the service. Try getting a little pushier. There may be nothing you can do, but make sure you understand the wording of the paperwork. Good luck.

With few exceptions, it really doesn't pay for the consumer. I had one on my last washing maching and my treadmill.
You're better off researching and shopping around prior to purchase.

You have to weigh if it break will it cost you less than the warranty. If it is more then it is probably worth it. But if you buy a VCR or DVD player I would not bother.

Take that extended warranty money and put it in a savings account... then use that for repairs, if you buy a good brand and from an established dealer, even if you get a lemon they will often take it back. Most large appliances last 12-15 years or more, things that fail these days are the micro circuitry cards, which makes the repair itself easier, but is often a costly part. If I buy an appliance or a tool that doesn't last, then I generally won't buy that brand again! Amazon.com is a good source of info on customer satisfaction, mostly for smaller appliances and tools, otherwise you will need to go to BBB or Consumer Reports.
