Can Organic Farming End World Hunger?

A research shows that organic farming can feed the world with causing harm to our planet. Several studies in the U.S., Britain and Australia have shown that such methods produce as much as 40 percent more than the more benign methods that served mankind well for thousands of years.

As a result, seed growers and pesticide makers are now working in poor countries to promote the same “green revolution” there, capable, they say, of growing enough food to feed the desperately hungry.

Answered No. Ending hunger is dependent more upon political will than agricultural prowess.

There was 'world' hunger long before our 'modern' technologies.
As long as there are people there will be the poor and the hungry. Should we care and try to help the starving and the poor? Yes; By Helping to Teach them to work the lands they are in. Easy ? NO. Every land where there is hunger there are government tyrants that forbid the aid to the needy.

I honestly think that growing a mix of varietals of various plants suited to the place you are growing them, coupled with IPM (Integrated Pest Management) is the only way to go. IPM is mostly organic but in the event of an actual huge infestation emergency that the beneficial bugs can't handle you pull out the heavy duty pesticides for spot treatment. And only then - in a real screaming emergency - 'cos otherwise the bugs get immune to the stuff! Which is the problem with the current system. The same thing has happened with anti-biotics.

If you try to carpetbomb insects (or bacteria) back to the Stone Age all the time you will simply have them get stronger than your arsenal. Which is a waste!

I really have trouble with statements like this. Lets see you can make so much more money, save the planet, have fun at partys and yet no one from the group of farmers that have been doing it for 1000s of years, comes out jumping at the chance. I know farmers here in Ohio who barely make it and some who rent their land to the big guys. There must be a reason why it ain't happening (2% isn't enough) Sorry but They all voted for Bush just doesn't work here.

Please reread the info with the poll....it looks a bit confusing....see the lines "organic farming can feed the world with causing harm to our planet." and "Several studies in the U.S., Britain and Australia have shown that such methods produce as much as 40 percent more than the more benign methods".

This seems to say that organic farming is more dangerous than chemical oriented methods.....this may not be easy to read through by some.....

Logisitcs has traditionally been more of a problem than growing food......getting the food transported to where it was needed, and not having that transportation interfered with by political or rebel factions....

Unless we are committed in donating that food to starving children.
