"The things they disliked the most were to have their long hair cut, to give up wearing their blankets, and to cease smoking. But no white American ever thinks that any other race is wholly civilized until he wears the white man's clothes, eats the white man's food, speaks the white man's language, and professes the white man's religion"~Booker T. Washington

Does that mean, I should stop eating collard green's, bbq and drinking Chai Tea?

-see this is where I must break from blanket statements...especially those I disagree with!

I really wish every one of every culture, race, religion would stop putting out blanket statements that they think covers another..isn't that why we are where we are??!!
  • raves +4   [-] raven~Vegan/Hussein/Commie~ replied to sadiesmom
Which statement are you referring to?
  • raves +6 -1 [-] sadiesmom replied to raven~Vegan/Hussein/Commie~
Raven-I am probably one of the least bigoted/racist people on this site...but, when I hear that everyone shouldn't be satisfied until all wear white peoples clothes, eat their food, etc..it bothers me..I eat and drink a lot of different foods from around the world, and few could be construed as white folks food...and as I'm a Yankee and love pot roast and hubby is a New Mexican and loves chilis..which white person's food?

I love my jeans, sweats, shorts, tee-shirts and sweaters..hubby loves his jeans, pants and Hawaiian shirts...so, see there is no stereotypical White Person!

Just as not all Japanese are great at math, or all women want children, or all Italians make love with wine & cheese or all Blacks are great at basketball...

Stereotypes will be the downfall of Humanity...we need to get past them all and appreciate what we have, how we can share and how we can indeed live side by side...

I know Sadies you are not bigoted/racist (I've read many of your comments) and I'm glad you appreciate all of what the different cultures can bring to the table, I think most people do, but this does not discount the systemic racial superiority that still exists in this country today. I respectfully disagree with the "blanket" statement, how you expierience "america" may be far different from how others view it.

There are many truths in your statement...but, as you know-one can only go from their own experiences...but, I want the experience to change..Ya know?
  • raves +7   [-] raven~Vegan/Hussein/Commie~ replied to sadiesmom
I'm with you, and it will, there's no doubt in my mind, change is always coming.

    Sadiesmom,

White society has very similiar characteristics and we are not speaking in generalization and stereotypes. I believe it is hard for white society to believe we know them as well as we do because they do not know our culture, mannerism, etc.
White society ignores the obvious---- minorities live in a white structural society which puts whites on a pedestal and demand that other races graduate to their standards. Your experience is different because society, government, schools etc cater to white american.
  • raves +3 -1 [-] sadiesmom replied to Tresor De Chocolat~Obama rocks
lol, Tresors..I must disagree with your last statement..in my adult experience..but, I do undertsand what you are saying and except it as your experience!

    *love?*
  • raves +7   [-] Tresor De Chocolat~Obama rocks replied to sadiesmom
White society will disagree with what I say because they believe every thing is correct according to their perspective. To which the phrase is coined "white is right." But I expected you would disagree.
  • raves +3 -1 [-] sadiesmom replied to Tresor De Chocolat~Obama rocks
No, I disagreed because I have had some discrimination from certain aspects of the powers that be...and, it was because I am white...so, I personally-that's all I can account for-do not feel every aspect of schools, governments & society is strickly white based..but, as I saw-that's just my personal experience!
  • raves +4   [-] Tresor De Chocolat~Obama rocks replied to sadiesmom
I will not debate the issue with you because I do not believe it was discrimintion you encounter. Discrimination has to do with the social structure and the races with less power.

Okay-it's like this-we lived west of the cut of of two different school districts...my son was kind of scared to go to the school the city said he had to, mostly because of the news reports always coming out of the area it was in, I called the district and I was told, it would upset the "racial balance" of the school if they gave permission for my son to attend the other school.

To me, it felt very much like reverse discrimination and my son went to a Catholic School due to the fact that he would have been too nervous to pay attention and do well at that school...it was in a very bad, drug infested, gang infested area and I did what I felt was best for my child...As, I think any mother would...

Now some may not agree with me, but a little child should not be afraid to go to school, regardless of their color!

Actually, no, he wasn't in school yet...

And the racial balance was non-existant..so, I know what I knew in Rochester, NY 23 years ago and I lived it and all the other things the school district was doing at the time..but, I know another will not see it as I did and I except that..

And, I vaguely recall, but, off the top of my head, no..

23 years ago the schools were "integrated", but they set up the lines knowing that many, many of the same would be in that district..and, in Rochester in the 70's we already went through the "experiment"..it wasn't need in the mid-80's.

I have no idea what their reasoning was-all I ever got was the racial balance thing, nothing more...

I never said they thought they were superior...I told them that my son was afraid...I still felt discriminated against, I'm sorry, I cannot agree with you 100%...
