keep a close eye on the movers moving big objects, fragiles, with loading and unloading the truck...it is usually a measure on how much the company truely cares about your things and witnessing any damages, make sure the final costs are given...be careful of clauses in the contract,.... you are entitled to a free re-weigh if your company suddenly states that weight estimates were way under preliminary estimates on poundage of your load therefore putting you into a higher price for moving your items....take the time to accurately mark the contents of each box...your beat by the end of the day and knowing how to get the essentials first really helps at that moment to eat and crash...

Sell EVERYTHING. You can buy new when you get there (trust me, I've moved a LOT and have yet to carry ANYthing with me that wasn't in the local stores when I got where I was going).

Amazing how much stuff you accumulate and don't realize it until you start packing.

I hate the packing, my tip is if you have children around get someone to babysit , it makes it twice as hard to have them under foot

It sucks so bad on so many levels. I have a few tips
Throw away as much crap as you can that you don't need anymore before you pack
    Label everything!
Sticky tape all your wardrobe doors and shelves shut
Use a sheet/blanket under heavy items to easily drag over floor
Use a truck with a tail lift at the back and take as many people's cars stacked with smaller stuff as you can to make less trips

I've moved like 5 times and I hate it everytime!

I suggest you get as many boxes and containers for everything and label the boxes and/or containers according to what's in them and start a week a head.I would suggest you also start a change of address a head of time if you can especially checks and bank ,car & life insurance address change stuff like that a head of time will keep you from getting headaches and from running around wwith your head chopped off.Oh almost forgot if you have a cell phone try to get the house phone, cable and internet transferred a few days ahead of time if you can.

Hmm...I always find it best to make sure your bed is one of the first things to go into your new house. At least you'll have a place to sleep if you don't finish moving or unloading. It's also a great time to get rid of a lot of junk, don't pack it and move it with you...throw it out. Took my parents a while before they agreed with me on that.
