Smoking while pregnant is 100% harmful to the baby. The baby has no control or choice in this matter. Any mother who smokes while pregnant is committing child abuse. I feel the same way about parents, adults, etc. who smoke in front of innocent kids. Read the science people, secondhand smoke/environmental tobacco smoke causes cancer KILLS innocent people every day! Ok, I'll get off my soapbox.... -

I do however think there should absolutely be a ban against smoking with children in your vehicle. Regardless of what damage may or may not be done to a fetus, second hand smoke for anyone is undeniably harmful.
I think all smokers should be so embarassed and ashamed they only do it in backyards anyway. -

I would love to see smoking while pregnant against the law, but, I have a few reservationans about the government coming into peoples homes, and encroaching on our private lives. Where would these kind of laws stop?
Smoking is, and always has been one of my pet peeves though! As a health care professional I have seen all of the bad, sad, serious, terminal effects of smoking. I do my very best to educate and encourage everyone I come in contact with to quit smoking. I also pray for all of my family and friends who smoke to quit. So far, my husband has quit, his co-workers have quit, my best friend and her husband are very close to quitting now, my son quit, another son quit chewing tobacco, two other nurses that I work with have quit. I am determined to keep these people in my prayers. Pregnancy and smoking just should not, and must not go together. It is an especially sad, situation. -
They wouldn't stop, We are all obligated to pay income tax, which is a pittance to the government, which routinely overspends. The tax was created after WW I to pay for the war costs. Guess what? We are still paying for it. One law at a time to erode our civil liberties.

if it were illegal, how would they actually keep people from doing it? cigarettes are legal to buy, and people usually smoke at home.
most people dont find out they're pregnant until about 2-3 months into the pregnancy. by then the baby has already been introduced to nicotine, so he/she makes the mother crave more. i smoked with both of my kids, but when i found out i was prego, i cut down to 1-2 cigs a day (half at a time) instead of the usuall half-pack a day. also, i think as some people are more prone to alchoholism, some people just become more addicted to nicotine.
--its NOT ok to smoke during pregnancy, some people just have a much harder time quitting than others -- -

It is a crime against the unborn, but how can you legislate a law that will be struck down in the appeals court. It will waste taxpayer money and take up court time. Most restaurants and public buildings ban smoking already. You wouldn't believe the number of laws already on our books that can't be enforced. This would be one more. -
Answered Yes
Yes, it should definitely be against the law. Maybe then less people would do it. People do it and then wonder why their child has turned out to be disabled. Then they have the cheek to even put them up for adoption or disown them. Well.. worst case scenario but still. It's just horrible to the child and it sets a bad example!! -

if a woman is going to try so hard to finally have a baby she should take good care of it and not smoke cuz smoking can damage the baby. all smoking is gonna do is hurt the baby and then the woman will feel terrible cause it will be all her fault. -
Answered Yes
I probably would have answered no a while back in my life. I used to be against moron prevention laws, like helmets, seat belts etc. Now, I've come to understand that when people are morons with their own selves, that we all pay for it indirectly, so I feel a little differently. I think I would support this particular one, (as well on one against pregnant women drinking and taking drugs), because there is another person involved. This one is not to protect the lady smoking, but to protect her child, who can't say anything about it. -

For the good of the fetus, yes, but dont we have more than enough
intrusions into our lives by the government? Maybe we should stop
pregnant women from riding in cars? (A small wreck COULD harm the
child!) Maybe lock them into a "pregnancy institure" until the child is
born? We can make sure they do nothing to possibly harm the child.
Just HOW FAR are we going to let the government go to protect us from our selves? -

Answered No
Absolutely not, no one or government has the right to legislate morals. It is all about education and morals, not making more laws.
