Is it true that you must wait 30 minutes after eating before swimming?
If at any time in your life you've had food in your hand near a swimming pool, you've heard this myth. You cannot swim until you've waited at least 30 minutes.

For some families, the more harsh "hour" rule was used. If you broke the rule, the implication was that you would get cramps, be unable to swim, drown, and die. This rule seemed to apply even if you stayed on the shallow end. According to this statistic, unlike air, water-to-skin contact has magical properties that cause the food in your belly to explode unless it is past a certain point in your digestive track. Answered It depends if you ate too much.

It's actually because that's the maximum amount of time it takes food to begin to break down and start forming gases. So if you go under, people can find you by looking for the fart bubbles.

you need oxygen to digest your food and swimming takes oxygen no oxygen no digestion =cramps then you can't really swim can you

Answered Yes. Your stomach is using oxygen to digest food that your muscles need to swim.

Well I guess that is what I always hear from people

if you eat to much then you wont be able to digest the food and swim at the same time because you need oxygen

Didn't they address this on Mythbusters? I think it depends on how much you ate, whether you're swimming in a pool or ocean, etc.

It's true for all exercise, not just swimming. I'm sure for some people it's different, we're not all the same.

I do know somebody who drowned from getting cramps whenever I was in high school years ago. I do not know if this was the reason it happened but I would not want to take the chance and find out!

I was always taught that if you swim on a full stomach you get cramp, but I think it's probably a myth. Except that doing any kind of hard physical exercise right after eating is generally not a good thing.

I don't think you are suppose to do any exercise right after eating because you will get stomach cramps. But from my own experience I use to eat a light breakfast and then go into the pool and whirlpool at my health club every morning and never had any problems.

I have lived around and swam since before I could walk, I always obeyed that rule because of the posibility of cramping. I have enough respect for water to know it will kill you if you disobey some basic rules.

You wouldn't drown and die it's just you would get a stomach ache.

Just don't eat an entire Thanksgiving dinner and attempt to win an olympic race.

It's the same with any other sport. You're not supposed to eat too close to exercising because you'll cramp up. It used to happen to me when I played basketball when I was a kid, and then my coach told me not to eat right before I played.

Now that I think about it, it's all just common sense.

    it's just that may get cramps after eating, so it's suggested that you wait at least 30 minutes. it's nothing with oxygen, but just the cramps. {you probably won't drown and die though}

You may not want to go into a rigorous cycle of excersize, because most of your circulation is concentrating on digestion, and too much excersize could cause a stitch. But, if you're going back in just to wade around in the backyard pool, you're fine.

No, but it is not that simple. If you where to have a big meal. The blood rushes to the stomach to digest it. The lack of blood in the muscles would cause the cramp. While unlikely it has it's base in fact. More likely you would regurgitate and make a mess in the pool. Not to say be the butt of many jokes. so play it safe.
