File this article as "scary and odd articles that make it on front page." An HIV-positive man convicted of spitting into the eye and mouth of a Dallas police officer has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Because a jury found that Willie Campbell used his saliva as a deadly weapon, the 42-year-old will have to serve half his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. He was sentenced Wednesday.
Campbell was being arrested in May 2006 for public intoxication when he began resisting and kicking inside the patrol car, Dallas police office Dan Waller testified.
Campbell was convicted of harassment of a public servant.

Answered Yes. That's scary and attempted murder.
It seems unfair at first, but if someone KNOWS they have HIV and they deliberately try to infect you by spitting in your eye and mouth, or anywhere bodily fluids can be transferred, such as an open sore, then they are attempting to kill you, very very slowly. Having HIV doesn't guarantee that you will develop AIDS, but each person is different, and many with HIV do develop it. What that drunk did was fire a bullet from his own body at the cop. That's not simple assault. That's attempted murder. -

Well, I realize you aren't suppose to be able to get aids through spit, but.... I don't think people realize you CAN get it if the person has gum disease, bleeding gums or other open wounds in the mouth. All in all, this man was wreckless & probably would've continue to spread the disease. The best place for him was behind bars. -

It's like having unfair special powers.
*edit* after reading some of what people had to say, I found this:
Which body fluids transmit HIV?
These body fluids have been shown to contain high concentrations of HIV:
* blood
* semen
* vaginal fluid
* breast milk
* other body fluids containing blood
The following are additional body fluids that may transmit the virus that health care workers may come into contact with:
* fluid surrounding the brain and the spinal cord
* fluid surrounding bone joints
* fluid surrounding an unborn baby
HIV has been found in the saliva and tears of some persons living with HIV, but in very low quantities. It is important to understand that finding a small amount of HIV in a body fluid does not necessarily mean that HIV can be transmitted by that body fluid. HIV has not been recovered from the sweat of HIV-infected persons. Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

WELL SAID. When I was working in a nursing home I sat on a needle left lying on a chair.I was sent to the E.r. and given a drug cocktail as they put it.Doctors belive that this mix of drugs if given in time will prevent the exposed person from contacting the Aides virus. BY THE WAY THAT WAS ABOUT 7 YEARS AGE AND HAVE HAD ALL CLEAN TESTS.

well as a health care worker we are not entitled to that info. unless the patient wants us to know,right to privacy laws. Most with HIV will tell you if they are infected.I had a job drawing blood in the inner city for a very short time and there was a clinc up the strret.We did get alot of HIV in there and they would tell you to double glove and be carfull.Noone wants to see another suffer like they do.well maybe not in this case but most.

TY... I was just curious because I don't think I am completely convinced about a cocktail to prevent aids. I've never heard of it, but am not in the medical field. My sister is a RN & I was gonna call her tomorrow & discuss it. God bless healthcare workers; definately a special class. Now if we could only control healthcare costs. LOL

ASK her about it I am sure she has heard of it. I cant tell you what the drugs were and I dont even know if it is still used . This is going back about ten years. I have been out of the loop for the last six.I now work with children in a school setting.

Answered No. 35 years for spitting at a cop is not fair.
Did he know he was infected to start with? HIV is not typically transmitted through saliva, and even then it is very susceptible to air (oxygen) and to spit into an eye, unless the officer was bleeding from the eye or socket, transmission would be rare... Hepatitis is a different story tho. -

Answered Undecided
I guess it all depends on whether or not he knew that he was HIV positive. Bottom line though, the cop was doing his job and he doesn't deserve to be infected with HIV just because Campbell was angry about being arrested.
