The US Army's enlisting age limit is 41, do you think this is too old?

The Pentagon wants to expand U.S. forces by 92,000 troops over the next five years. To meet that goal, recruiters are drawing on a bigger pool of applicants. Last year, the Army lowered high school test standards for some recruits, and raised its age limit to 41.

As long as someone can do the job that they are assigned then the age does not matter.

We should draft 21-35 and if you want to just join it should be 15-18 with parental consent and 19-45 for all others.

Doesn't common scense imply that, that decision is best made by the military?

It's not as if they aren't going to go through the same physical and psycological testing everyone else does.

I have mixed feelings about this.
In one aspect, I have seen people in their forties look healthier than people in their 20s (and smarter too).
In another aspect, that's just more lambs for Bush to corral to the slaughter.
More death. More broken families. More waste of taxpayers' money.

Not at all. I have many friends whose only regret is not joining the service. This will now give them that chance, if they so decide. When people get older they see the world differently. Men in their thirties who witnessed the attacks on 9/11 are mad as hell, and now they can do something to help. I think it's an excellent idea. 41 is not that old. Just ask Roger Clemens! :)

I don't think 41 is to old, but I don't think it is ok to lower our standards.

Yet another way our government discriminates! I am so tired of laws that discriminate against groups of people because of closed minded bigotry

Increasing the age requirement is fine, real men and women who know that they want to fight for their country, as long as they have the mental capacity and physical attributes that the military requirres. I honestly think that bringing in some more adults would be great for morale, some of the kids would feel they have a dad on the field with them Lowering test standards, not no but hell no! My husband is retired and I did one hitch in the Navy. Sorry, there are already enough recruits in the military without a clue, we don't need anymore!

I'm not sure lowering test standards is a good idea. I do not believe age limits should be placed on volunteers.

41 is not old,in fact I dont think there should be an age limit if someone even older wants to enlist and is fit and in good health. Many of the older generation want to join and aren't allowed which is a real shame when their experience and wisdom could be an assett.

I think it ought to be 60. I know Pilots who want to jump in. They are allowed to fly with the Airlines until then. I know allot of nurses who want to go that are too old. There are standards they will hold them too and that should be the line in the sand so to speak. What you guys do not realize and do not want to face is that we have an enormous shortage of troops to take care of the USA. And they are just laying in wait, it's only a matter of time.

IF THEY CAN MEET THE STANDARDS, ALL OF THEM, THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO JOIN. MOST WOMEN PRESENTLY IN THE SERVICE CANNOT KEEP UP WITH A HEALTHY 41 YEAR OLD MAN.

Let the geezers work the support roles. Throw the kids out into battle. You don't have to be able to hump 90 lbs around on your back if you're fixing trucks, managing computers, or sorting mail.
  • raves +2   [-] by JINX
I DISAGREE WITH YOUR THINKING OWEN. IF ONE IS ALLOWED TO JOIN, ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS, PHYLICAL AND CLERICAL. WHY SHOULD ABLE BODIED YOUNG MEN BE OFFERED ONLY THE TOUGH ASSIGNMENTS? THIS IS A VOLUNTEER ARMY. VOLUNTEER, AND EXPECT TO DO THE JOB.
  • raves +1   [-] by Owen
It's a military, not a college. An volunteer goes where the military wants them to go. Not the other way around. Its all about maximizing the rate of kill and if an officer has a choice between a broke down old man with an attitude and a healthy fear of death, and a eager, fast-sprinting kid with an invincibility attitude who won't talk back, who's going to get picked to clear the rooms?
  • raves +2   [-] by JINX
IF THE OLD MAN MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS, HE WANT BE BROKEN DOWN, AND IF HE VOLUNTEERED, WHY WOULD HE HAVE AN ATTITUDE? THERE COULD EASILY BE A SITUATION WHERE SOME FAST SPRINTING KID PEES HIS PANTS WHEN CONFRONTED WITH A CERTAIN SITUATION, WHERE THE OLD GUY'S EXPERIANCE ENABLES HIM TO MEET THE TASK.

BEING THAT I SERVED IN THE ARMY AS WELL AS THE NAVY,I AM UP IN THE AIR ON THIS ISSUE I GUESS TO ME IT DEPENDS ON THE FIELD THAT A VETERAN SERVED IN BEFORE HE LEFT THE ARMY,AS FOR A NEW RECRUIT AT THE AGE OF 41,IT WILL BE A CHALLENGE GETTING THROUGH BOOT CAMP AND THAT IS NO JOKE.

Seeing that you only need 20 years to reach retirement that still puts
them at 61, providing that they can pass the physical requirements of
the job then yes. It should be more about ability than age. Ooops mishit the mouse again. This mouse and i are having issues.

There are plenty of jobs in the military that can be done by someone who might be more advanced in years. In fact why not recruit professionals of any age for jobs that are appropriate for their age and profession. I'm an operations executive and I would accept a commission if I was recruited and I am in my mid forties. With that said we should not compromise the training or physical expectation for those who will be combat troops.
  • raves     [-] by Jesse James

Half the jobs in the Army don't even involve fighting. There are plenty of administrative and mechanical jobs that they can do, and if they are in good shape they could fight as well.
