General Music
One way or another, people have to be taught to read music lyrics.
Generally speaking, those who can play music "by ear" were born with the ability, or acquired the skill at a young age.
Also to think about, which one is harder to attain? Which would you rather have? Can either of them come natural to some people, and can one of the two abilities seem impossible to do from the other's point of view? Is it likely for one person to be able to do both?

Answered A true musician can do both.
I'm assuming that when you say "lyrics" you mean notes on a scale, chords , pitches, etc..,thes are learned skills, from years of studying. To play by ear is a natural gift, just as somebody can draw or paint with no schooling.A true musician can excel because he /she studied music for years while having the predisposition for.True ,some people can play without having studied much, but only a certain type of music,to play in a Symphony or Opera ,for example ,it is essential to read music. -
My boyfriend plays guitar, harmonica, and piano by ear really well. Funny thing, just this morning he was playing the harmonica, like tracy. He is very good at everything he does, but for some reason he can not read music lyrics. I don't know if its just because he doesn't want to try or what...When i told him i could read lyrics, i could tell he was spiteful. Maybe not spiteful, but mad that i could do something that he couldn't. I have always been in awe by his ability to pick up any instrument and play by ear, so this surprised me. On a more general note, do you think someone possess a natural talent to be able to play by ear, or that the quickness to read music and play at the pace of the notes is "better"? I haven't decided.
