Should the Boston Red Sox sign Barry Bonds?

Should the Boston Red Sox sign Barry Bonds?
David Ortiz's wrist injury could have him gone for the season, so the Sox will need a new designated hitter. Should the Red Sox organization sign the most controversial man in baseball?

I don't like the Red Sox, but I'll admit they're a good team and having Barry Bonds play for them would only bring them negative attention. His presence would take attention away from the players on the team who actually work for the HRs they hit.

He is the best home run hitter of all time, why not? Seems to be reasonable doubt as to steroid use.

Not only no, but Barry should have to wait until he is completely cleared of criminal charges before MLB will accept him back into league play.

30,000 would show up just to heckle him. Just sell tomatoes along with the hot dogs and they'll make more than he charges!

David Ortiz is on the DL and for how long, no one seems to know. Bonds would make a great DH.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan i have to say Hell No! That man is a cancer. Aside from the steroid abuse his attitude is crap. He is the absolute opposite of Big Papi. Plus, we can't confuse Manny like that. We get down on Manny "for being Manny" then we bring in Baroid. No! I would be pissed. Baroid is not Randy Moss where Moss could be given a second chance to prove himself. No, Baroid will have to sully another franchise. I'd rather give a shot to finding another player. There are other DHs out there.

Doesn't matter, Bonds will still suck! Not sure the Sox's will tolerate steroids anyway

Bonds does not like Boston and Boston does not like Bonds
  • raves +1   [-] by Mister Six
Boston likes winning baseball games. And Barry wins baseball games.
  • raves     [-] by Hussein Bear
According to RedSox.com they're hoping Ortiz will be back later this month or next month. Not worth bothering with Bonds. Barry Bonds is trouble and they don't need it.
  • raves +1   [-] by Mister Six
Yeah, except that Bonds posted a higher OPS last year than even Ortiz. Bonds is a ridiculous offensive force. If Ortiz is coming back then there's no need for him in Boston.

But for a team like the Mariners, who's offense has struggled... how do you explain batting Jose Vidro at DH with his .235/.273/.350 numbers... when Bonds is out there waiting for a job offer?!

If I were a fan, I'd be calling for the GM's head.
  • raves     [-] by Hussein Bear
You make a good point with Seattle, they're playing .350 ball and certainly could use some help. Bonds made a remark a few years back about Boston being racist and they do not like him there.
  • raves +1   [-] by Mister Six
Umm... hate to break it to you, but Boston's pretty racist. They were pretty much the last team in baseball to warm to the idea of having black players. And the city does have sorta a long history of outward racism.
  • raves   -1 [-] by Hussein Bear
I remember Pumpsie Green, Boston's first black player in 1959, but I don't know how that matches up with other teams. Then there was forced busing in the '70's in Boston, but I don't see any of that today and certainly not at Fenway Park. I go up there every summer and all over Boston they think David Ortiz is God. You can't look in any direction without seeing at least one Ortiz shirt.
  • raves     [-] by Mister Six
    David Ortiz isn't black.
  • raves   -1 [-] by Hussein Bear
He was the last time I saw him. He's not African American, he's Dominican but he most certainly is black. And Boston loves him.
  • raves     [-] by Mister Six
He's hispanic. And it's kind of ignorant to insist that a hispanic person is black because they're dark-skinned hispanic.
  • raves     [-] by Hussein Bear
Have you ever filled out a form where it asks your ethnicity ?

    Hispanic ---Black
    Hispanic ---Other

And if you can look at David Ortiz and say that he is not black then you, my friend, are blind.
  • raves     [-] by Mister Six
Umm... nope, never seen it listed that way. Ever. Ever ever. And again, he's hispanic, aka latino, aka not african.

The best reason I've heard for why they shouldn't sign the best hitter in baseball and give him at bats was this:

Dan Shaughnessy will try to construe it into another curse, which might freak out the fan base, and sell another million books for that hopeless hack of a writer.

Bonds is the best hitter in the game... and even at his age, he's probably going to hit 20 homers in half a season and get on base 45% of the time.

That kind of person is like a cancer on a team. I've coached enough of them to know.
