Alternative Fuel to Replace Gasoline in Vehicles; Which are you betting on?

Alternative fuels are derived from resources other than petroleum. Some are produced domestically, reducing our dependence on imported oil, and some are derived from renewable sources. Often, they produce less pollution than gasoline or diesel.

Answered Hydrogen; Produced domestically and non polluting.

Hydrogen technology exists right now which is competitive with
traditional engines. However, for the industry to get off the ground a
massive investment in supply infrastructure and hydrogen-producing
facilities will be necessary. Since it is unlikely that energy
companies will go there without a massive nudge, the government has to
step in to encourage this to happen.
    Some of the other technologies
(like corn-based ethanol) are not cost-effective in terms of the energy
produced versus the energy expended to manufacture it (and the
diversion of the corn crop from animal feed and human consumption to
ethanol production has been a disaster, contributing to food shortages
in Mexico, for example). Also, it leads to more runoff pollution,
diversion of land use from other food crops such as soybeans, and so
forth. Brazil has a cost-effective ethanol production program, but they
use sugar cane. Probably that is not practical for us in America.

Answered Hydrogen; Produced domestically and non polluting.

Hydrogen fuel cells are the one that I'm hoping for. It's still electric, you're just not limited by a battery charge.

As for biodiesel....that's a myth, as is ethanol.

ALL OF THE ABOVE. We should also be trying to make the internal combustion engine more efficeint as well...how about supplimenting our Gas with Hydrogen...or Ethanol...maybe a turbine engine? Deposits and nasty stuff from the tail pipe and on our cylider walls and rings are because we can't burn all the fuel...we actually waste fuel.

Of all of these I am more impressed by the water powered car. It is much cleaner option.

Really cool. I wonder how much it costs to fuel.
  • raves +1   [-] fuzzy Ken replied to Jerry
    Good question.
While it may be about the same as gas now due to supply, there are programs to make it cheaper. Can we blame Bush for this too?

from May 2007 "Now, the Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded H2Gen with its “DOE Hydrogen Program R&D Award” for creating a low cost hydrogen generator. H2Gen’s HGM-10,000 meets the DOE target of reducing hydrogen gas prices to $2.50 per gallon equivalent by the year 2010."

Never heard of hysdogen power, I'd have to look into that. But I like the idea of vehicles being powered by bio waste (like used oil from fast-food restaurants etc).

Answered Hydrogen; Produced domestically and non polluting.

Hydrogen fuel cells are the best alternatives because the cars are completely emission-free...hydrogen is renewable and abundant… the cars are compatible with cold weather…the cars are about three times as efficient as gasoline powered cars…and have incredible mileage.

Answered Hydrogen; Produced domestically and non polluting.

There are a few vehicles of this kind in use over here, and they've worked out pretty well so far. Among them is a public bus. I think it's a great kind of fuel. A few people have complained that they pollute more than the gasoline powered cars, but that's just hogwash. The hydrogen cars pollute no more than an average pot of boiling potatoes does. They may look like they do, because of the white cloud of steam the emit, but that's just water vapor, really. Which is good for the clouds. More rain. =)

Ethanol is not a good alternative at all! It requires more energy to produce it than gas and it's causing a food shortage that will only get worse.

I like the electric car idea but even that, what are you plugging it into. I'm not talking about an outlet, what I'm talking about is where your power is coming from: Nuclear, coal, etc. or is the electricity created by Solar, wind, water, damns, tides or geothermal.

    GO GREEN

Always been a hydrogen freak. Always thought there must be a way to do this. However even today the expense would be hugh. Oil is still the cheapest and that's why nobody will ever do anything really important.

I'm thinking Electric is the more reasonable alternative to gasoline. Of course the entire energy grid would have to be substantially upgraded.

Ethanol nor biodiesel are the solution. Farmers start growing crops for fuel instead of food.
