The Leper Colony Posted on November 6th, 2008 by Daniel Koffler If your reading habits are anything like mine, the video of Carl Cameron telling Shepard Smith that Sarah Palin doesn’t know which countries are signatories to NAFTA, thinks Africa is a country, obstinately refused to prepare herself for her interview with Katie Couric (because who among us could name the periodicals we read without at least a cram session?), and threw “temper tantrums” over critical press, probably popped into your RSS feed a comfortable 150 times in the last couple of hours. As Daniel Larison observes, this is not the most auspicious day for anti-anti-Palin conservatives. Never fear, though; Erick Erickson and the RedState Team sprang into immediate action: RedState is pleased to announce it is engaging in a special project: Operation Leper. We’re tracking down all the people from the McCain campaign now whispering smears against Governor Palin to Carl Cameron and others. Michelle Malkin has the details. We intend to constantly remind the base about these people, monitor who they are working for, and, when 2012 rolls around, see which candidates hire them. Naturally then, you’ll see us go to war against those candidates. It is our expressed intention to make these few people political lepers. They’ll just have to be stuck at CBS with Katie’s failed ratings. P.S. - Did I ever tell you how RedState was able to stock Gov. Palin’s campaign plane with twenty of these?. We were glad to. And we were glad not to mention it at the time. We are rooting for Sarah Palin. Don’t make us add you to our list. Do you really want to be next to Kathleen Parker in the leper colony? Frankly, I’m confused. The whole point of calling the exile you intend for your enemies a “leper colony,” one would think, is to create the impression that it’s an unpleasant place to be. But the informed, rational worldview of Erick and our other intrepid heroes rests on the premise that the rewards of pulling a Brutus, Cassius, or Judas on the infantile Imperatrix of the North are simply irresistible to those of weak-will and debauched virtue. I thought we had established beyond a shadow of a doubt that Kathleen Parker, David Frum, Christopher Buckley, Ken Duberstein, Kenneth Adelman, Colin Powell, Peggy Noonan (possibly), David Brooks, Jeffrey Hart, Ross Douthat, anyone who has written for Culture 11, et al., could only have criticized Sarah Palin in order to secure invations to exclusive cocktail parties in tawny neighborhoods of Manhattan and Washington, D.C. (though granted, in the case of the ladies on this list, they clearly criticized Mrs. Palin in part because they were jealous of her looks). In any event, Erick did stumble onto a very solid bit of inferential reasoning. One can only “make” someone a leper, short of bio-weaponization techniques a bit beyond even RedState’s competence, by contracting the infection and then transmitting it. Now of course, leprosy is a particularly nasty bug, and it’d be asking a lot of RedStaters to get themselves sick with it. But this isn’t just any political cause; we’re talking about the long-term viability of the woman who is guaranteed to lead the GOP to crushing victories in at least half the states that border Appalachia, and crushing defeats absolutely everywhere else. No burden is to heavy to bear to see to it that Barack Obama breezes to a second term effectively unopposed. There is a Catch-22, however. What with all their limbs falling off from the leprosy, it’s going to be awfully hard to “track down” able-bodied traitors to the project of running candidates for office whose sole qualification and entire platform consists in seething, ugly, and all-around pitiable resentment of an increasingly large majority of the country. Obama Effigy! Will there be equal National Public outrage? We heard about the Effigy of Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin that was hung with a noose from a West Hollywood home as Halloween decorations. The police department refused to order it removed saying it was "free speech" not "hate speech". Well, I wonder how those who didn't so much mind that free speech, will react to the effigy that was hung for Halloween in Kentuckey. Something tells me that they'll just go ballistic over this. Kind of like when the Bush life is threatened on a daily basis for eight years. But that's O.K. because he deserves it. What are your thoughts?

If we are as citizens to preserve defend and uphold the constitution, it seems to me that the number one threat to the continuation of the constitution as we know it is Obama. His supporters said "George Bush is not our president. Even made a movie about his assassination. Lets see if we'll go 8 years without an attack with Obama. Check out the audio/video proof that he's a Marxists, and lies about it.

The Case Against Slave Reparations by Peter Flaherty and Patrick Chisholm Slavery: Who Is Responsible? Only a tiny minority of Americans today have an ancestor who was a slaveowner. Prior to and during the Civil War, the great majority of the U.S. population was located in the northern states, where slavery did not exist. In 1860, the total population of the U.S. states where slavery was outlawed was about 19.5 million. The free population of the South was 7.5 million. This means that among Americans today who had ancestors living in the United States during the time of slavery, most of those ancestors lived in northern states, and are thus completely innocent of slavery. In fact, many of those northerners were abolitionists and detested the institution of slavery. Whey should their progeny have to pay reparations? Let us take the small minority of Americans living today who had ancestors living in the south. Chances are, those ancestors were not slave owners. Of whites living in the South at that time, only one out of four owned slaves. Only a tiny minority of Americans, therefore, had direct ancestors who were slave owners. What About Immigrants? Even more significant is that the vast majority of Americans' ancestors did not even live in the United States during the time of slavery. They immigrated here long after slavery was abolished. The graph illustrates this point. It shows the number of immigrants per decade since 1820, the earliest year for which the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization service has statistics. From 1820 to 1860, when slavery still existed, the number of immigrants per decade was relatively modest. And the total population of the United States in 1820 was 9.5 million, indicating that prior to that, the level of immigration was modest as well. Great waves of immigration took place long after the Civil War, particularly around 1900, as well as the most recent decade. In fact, since 1870, more than 78 million people have immigrated into the United States, versus a small fraction of that prior to 1860. Everyone can all agree that the more-than 45 million Americans of Latin American and Asian descent are completely unrelated to the U.S. slavery experience, since almost all of their ancestors immigrated to the U.S. long after slavery ended, most of them in recent decades. And of the very few people of Latin American or Asian origin who were U.S. citizens during the time of slavery, it is safe to say that very few of them, if any, were slave owners. What about Americans of European descent? If "guilt" is determined by one's ancestors being slave owners, then Americans of Italian, Polish, Slavic, Scandinavian, Greek, and other descents can be sure they are completely innocent; their ancestors immigrated to the U.S. long after slavery ended. Even the vast majority of Americans of Western European origin are innocent; their ancestors came here after the Civil War as well. Another significant point is that millions of black Americans did not even have ancestors who were U.S. slaves. More than a half million Africans emigrated to the United States in recent decades. And many if not most of those immigrants have children, bringing the total number of African Americans whose ancestors were not enslaved to at least a million, probably more. Assuming slave reparations were paid to all blacks, that constitutes many, many people who would be entitled to reparations whose ancestors were not even slaves. Moreover, there were almost a million immigrants from Haiti and Jamaica in recent decades, almost all of them black. While their ancestors were slaves, they were not enslaved in the U.S. Why would U.S. citizens have to pay reparations to people whose ancestors were enslaved in another country? White Slavery It may come as a surprise to many that during the pre-Civil War period in America, whites were enslaved, too. And this does not simply refer to voluntary indentured servitude. From the 1600s until the Civil War, whites were frequently kidnapped or captured in Europe, and sold into slavery in the Americas. According to historian John Van Der Zee, from 1609 until well after the founding of the United States, half of all the colonists who came to America arrived under some form of involuntary labor. The main difference from blacks' situation was that most white slaves were in this situation for a certain number of years, typically five to eight years, and subsequently set free. But this in no way diminishes the significance of white slavery. Forced, unpaid labor is slavery pure and simple, whether it lasts a lifetime or for many years. Moreover, many of those white slaves - as many as a quarter of them died before they could be set free, so they were in fact enslaved for life. Describing white indentured servants, Van Der Zee writes: "Except for the important distinctions that their existence as individuals was acknowledged by law, and that after their term of servitude they were to be granted the full rights of freemen and women, the status of these people was essentially the same as that of slaves. They, the work they did, and the clothes on their backs belonged entirely to their masters. They could be hired out, sold, or auctioned, even if this meant separating them from their families. They could be beaten, whipped, or branded. If they ran away they could be punished by an extension, often a multiplication, of their term of servitude; in some colonies, runaways were hanged, a process too wasteful to apply to slaves, who retained, after all, the value of capital." Many Europeans were deceived into indentured servitude by false promises of prosperity in America, when in fact they were signing themselves into a life of extreme hardship. Still others were abducted outright and shipped to the colonies, particularly beggars, paupers, orphans, vagabonds, criminals (many of them guilty of only minor offenses), and others who were thought to be a burden to England. In fact, the term kidnapping or "kid-nabbing" originated from this method of peopling the Americas. In London, people were kidnapped or "spirited" - captured while drunk - and sold into slavery. Another type of white slave were prisoners of war and subjugated peoples. Oliver Cromwell exiled thousands of war prisoners to Barbados and Jamaica in the 17th century, many of whom were women and children from Ireland. Many if not most of them died, overworked and highly vulnerable to tropical diseases. In Barbados and other tropical areas to which Europeans were not accustomed, as many as four-fifths of a shipment of servants died within the first year. Higher Death Rates The notorious "middle passage" endured by Africans - the Atlantic crossing of slaves from Africa to the Americas - was indeed terrible, with death and disease ever present. But conditions on board ships transporting Europeans to the Americas were equally terrible. Both voluntary and involuntary emigrants were confined below the decks in crowded, disease-ridden conditions with insufficient food or water. "There is on board these ships terrible misery, stench, fumes, horror ... so that many die miserable," according to a German passenger on one of the ships. For the entire two- to three-month voyage, white slaves were typically never permitted to go above deck. They were crammed together in holes, in chains. In fact, deaths on ships coming from Europe equaled or exceeded deaths on ships coming from Africa. According to historian Sharon V. Salinger, during the 1700s the mortality rate for black slaves was 10 to 20 percent, versus 25 percent for white slaves. Once the survivors reached the shores of America, further unimaginable cruelties were inflicted upon them. Those who already had contracts were turned over to their unknown masters, and others were sold on the auction block. Families were frequently divided when wives and children were auctioned off to the highest bidder." Others were herded like cattle to the backcountry to be sold at auction. Particularly in the Caribbean, white slave and black slaves worked side by side on the same plantations. And because slave owners paid more for blacks than for whites, one historian wrote that "the planters treated the black better than did their 'Christian' white servant." He continued, "Even the Negroes recognized this and did not hesitate to show their contempt for those men who, they could see, were worse off than themselves....the blacks ate as well as, and sometimes better than, the mass of white servants...and many freemen." There were many white slaves in the South during and just prior to the Civil War who were not even indentured servants. According to an anti-slavery handbill for the 1856 election, a pro-slavery editorial in the Richmond Enquire read, "Slavery is right, natural, and necessary, and does not depend upon difference of complexion. The laws of the slave states justify the holding of white men in bondage." Typically, whites in the South were enslaved because they had a tiny percentage of black ancestry. One woman on the auction block was one sixty-fourth black; one of her great-great-great-great grandparents was black. Many of these white slaves fled to the North, and were pursued by slave catchers. Following is an excerpt from a 1939 article in Philanthropist titled "White Slaves": "A very large proportion of the slave population in the South are but slightly colored, and many of them are so nearly white as to require the closest scrutiny to detect the fact of their having the first drop of African blood....Color is becoming every day less and less a test by which to determine the fact of human chattelship." No Reparations for Whites or Blacks The African American historian Shelby Steele points out that issue of white slavery has been suppressed in America because there probably was a time when whites, ashamed of this fact, wanted to suppress it. "But now it's probably blacks who want to suppress it," said Steele. "Those who are grounded in the idea of black victimization may feel that this weakens their argument."
